The penultimate chapter of AvX has a major character death. Ready?
Scott Summers took all of the Phoenix Force into himself, beating the crap out of his own girlfriend Emma Frost for her half of the Phoenix, and then murdered Charles Xavier.
My reading on it: The two characters who were treated the worst in X-Men: The Last Stand took it out on each other. I saw a lot of X3 movie trauma played out in these pages. At least Cyclops didn't explode Charles into a bunch of little itty bitty X bits like Jean Grey did in the movie.
Professor X is now dead. Cyclops has become Dark Phoenix.
Things look bad.
On the other hand, Captain America recruited Hulk into the Avengers and the rest of the X-Men minus Cyclops, Emma Frost, and the out of commission Colossus, Magik, and Namor defected to the Avengers' side.
And they're all screwed. Cyclops will kill them all, one presumes.
So "Avengers vs. X-Men" is now a misnomer. It's more like Avengers vs. X-Man. Or A+XvC/DP.
(Best moment in the issue was Hawkeye shooting an arrow into Cyclops' neck and his reaction: "He's gonna kill me!" Spider-Woman: "Probably.")
No probably about it.
Overall, I've enjoyed AvX in the same way I enjoy a big loud dumb summer movie. One more of these and then it's Marvel NOW.

Xavier's death was as underplayed as Bucky's in Fear Itself, so much so that I immediately don't buy it. If they continue the Last Stand precedent, he'll grab someone's body. I say MODOK, becoming MODOX.

Using X-3 as a template is probably the worst thing you can do. I am not sure how Scott Summer could beat Emma in a Psychic battle, but whatever. I was leery of this crossover and now I think flipping through it at a Barnes and Noble instead of buying it.

Xavier's death is getting press, which makes me think this is legit. But man, they sure LOVE to kill Xavier, don't they? Never mind the alternate world tales like Age of Apocalypse and House of M, which are both built on the premise that Xavier died, but they're constantly teasing Xavier dying or getting killed off. They did it as recently as Messiah CompleX, which ended with Xavier getting shot in the head and everyone mourning his supposed death...which he ended up surviving.
Well, there's always the Ultimate Comics version of Xav...oh wait, he's dead there, too.
For such a cool character like Charles Xavier, it's starting to feel like he's Marvel's equivalent of a red shirt.
Honestly, it's not like Xavier's been doing much in the comics lately. Since Legacy transitioned from him to Rogue, Xavier's been the odd man out, and killing him now makes as much sense as anything.
He seemed tacked on into the AvX story, running after Cyclops to make him pay attention to him.
Killing him makes sense in that it just turned Cyclops into a whole new character. A few years ago he became the leader of the X-men, now he pretty much fully turned into Magneto. Though of course it can/will be blamed on the Phoenix Force when it needs to be recttified/retconned.
It also leaves the X-world without a default leader, which obviously helps Marvel Now create that new status quo following AvX where it'll be A+X.

Mmm. That's pretty much what I was thinking. Actually, comic book character deaths in general are overplayed and not dramatic anymore. Ever since they killed Superman and brought him back, it seems All The Cool Kids Are Doing It. Hell, it started earlier than that, with Robin.

They didn't bring Jason Todd back til a few years ago, they just passed the mantel to Tim. Death of Superman is still a great book as were the books that followed it. Shit, it lead to Hal goes bat shit. The problem was the resurrection, there was no good way to get him back without a cheat. There should have been a bigger sacrifice to get him back like Pa or Jimmy or even Lana. Instead it was Eradicator who nobody expect the Punisher fans gave a shit about. There needed to be a bigger moment of him coming back if they replaced Mongul with Darkseid, it would have been huge.
Jean has been dead for almost a decade now, so props for Marvel for that. I just don't see the need to kill Xavier or shit on Scott anymore. I am also not a big fan of pushing the Avengers over the X-Men when its not need. They could have done a great X-Men vs. Avengers arc, hell they did back in the 80s with putting Magento on trial without Phoenix. That should have been saved for an X-Men Crossover to make it the Messiah trilogy.
It just seems weird that we have everyone in the Marvel U going after this power, but two major figures in Reed and Doom are missing. Doom with the Phoenix Force, come on, Galactus would be shitting his pants.

He first was killed off in X-Men 42, back in March of 68,but that was retconned to be Changeling posing as Xavier when he was killed.
It seems that they kill off the Prof every 5-7 years, or give him use of his legs back just to take it away again, when they run out of ideas on what to do with him.

It wasn't so much a Battle as he attacked her after Hulk Smashed her into the ground.
It does seem fitting that Cyclops gets to go through what Jean did. Lately I have hated Cyclops in this whole event he isn't acting like a leader of the Mutants and more like The worst parts of Magneto,Sinister, and Dr.Doom.
So unless something out of the blue happens we are left with 2 outcomes.
1) Cyclops destroys everything but some how sees the error of his ways and rebuilds the world.
and
2) Somehow the Kill Cyclops and the X-men reunite under who ever they can trust, because most likely Namor,Magik,Emma and Colossus are kicked out of the team ya know for trying to kill them and all.
Dont say its not worth it, when you can sleep with no fear, that kind of time is worth any thing.- FFX

I think COlossus was on the cover for one of the new Marvel Now books, Cable & X-Force so maybe he goes undercover for a bit. No clue about the others. I might've seen some of them on the various covers and reveals but I don't remember.
I've seen some spoilers about Cyclops but I kind of try to stay away from those so I don't know details.
One of the only choices to lead the X-men would be Storm. She is one of the old guard and one of the leaders. Or Beast.
Ok, so I was behind a few issues when this thread started, but now I've read them and I gotta say I like how AvX plays out. The way stood up to the Colossus and Magik was very cool Hope punching Cyclops and the way Emma made everyone on Utopia her slave. Fun stuff.
Never been a huge X-Men fan, but as an outsider it seems that someone is always dying. Jean, Colossus, whoever. I didn't feel anything at all. Marvel just goes to the death well so often that it doesn't mean anything. I was shocked to read Jean has stayed dead as long as she has.
Right? There's also: "The world doesn't trust the Justice League." "What do you suggest we call our Justice League?" "The Justice League of America." [facepalm]
