Quick thoughts:

-I sat through this show for two reasons. One was for the championship situation and I couldn't imagine it playing out better than it did. The final segment made up for nearly three hours of dreck with both Punk and Cena delivering dynamite promos! Everything both guys said was spot-on, from Punk feeling disrespected to Cena's reasoning that he HAS to believe in himself as the best. I'm very much looking forward to their match, which bookends their saga beautifully -- July 2011 took place in CM Punk's Chicago and now it all gets settled in September 2012 in John Cena's Boston.

The one sour spot was the ending bit with Lawler and even that wasn't horrible. I have a big problem with Lawler not calling Punk the best, because Punk's the CHAMPION! And BY DEFINITION, that makes Punk the best! So that part rang very hollow to me. The attack seemed to cement a Punk heel turn...until you realize that Lawler bumped Punk first! Go watch that again! Lawler makes contact with Punk first and Punk REACTED with the kick! This is the opening for people to make up their own minds about whether they want to back Punk or not. This was all BEAUTIFULLY played out. Bravo!

-The second reason I tuned in to watch was for the follow-up with Lesnar. And...oh goodie, he's retiring again. I'm assuming he's gone until Triple H goads him back in for Hell in a Cell. That contrivance aside, I can't hate on Paul Heyman's fantastic opening promo. And bonus points for subtly burying Cole and Lawler while he was at it.

I had a big complaint lined up about not taking advantage of Brock's heat and Punk's feeling of disrespect to naturally pair the two together in a title feud to get some much-needed spotlight on the title, but I tossed that all out the window with how wonderfully executed the show-ending angle was. As you were.

-You know, I could talk about Zack Ryder getting buried for the hundredth time, but really, that's shooting fish in a barrel at this point. All I can say is that it's really depressing to watch Ryder get his first Raw match in months that didn't involve a 60-second ADR squash, give it everything he has, only to get treated like a complete joke. I really do have to question why he even bothers anymore. And at the same time, I respect it, because lesser men (like...oh...let's say Buff Bagwell, for old times sake) would have been doing the "pin me, pay me" deal long ago. Ryder deserves so much better than he gets, but you already knew that.

-If the payoff to Kane and Bryan's anger management angle is to promote Charlie Sheen's Anger Management show, I will throw my remote at my TV. (The irony of what that says is not lost on me, so nobody point that out, please.)

-And then came Jericho/Dolph, which couldn't have been handled worse if they tried. I have to think Chris Jericho's coming back someday, because he deserves so much better than to go out on yet another round of bullshit Even Steven booking. Then everything after was so dreadful, with Jericho attacking Dolph for shits and giggles (because let's make Ziggler look like a dope too!) and getting booed for it and then Cole's burial of Jericho afterwards. "DURR HURR HURR! JERICHO CAN'T WIN THE BIG ONE!" I hope Cole gets hit by a bus, along with anyone who booked this idiocy.

And that's all I got. Monday Night Football starts in 3 weeks. Go!

Not sure where they're going with The Big Show and his "I can take anyone one on one, why do they keep putting me in essentially handicap matches?" A feud with Ryback, who's demanded handicap matches?

Last week we had Jericho building up Ziggler while still saying he'd win; tonight Heyman showed the same skill, building up HHH as near immortal to make Lesnar's win even more impressive. To tie in with the first graph: Feed. Me. More.

yeah, I watched some of the show tonight.

to me the most telling comment is during the most boring battle Royale even conducted, they took a shot of layla (is that right? The champ) and Lawler goes "and layla's still awake".

Enjoyed Hayman's promo of course. Surprised by Jericho clobbering Ziggler and then acting like a face. I figured it was his heel turn. Must be another Fozzy tour.

Hearing that Ryder and Kane teaming up cracked me up and Kane destroying him for the hundredth time was comical. Man someone in power really, really doesn't like Ryder. I will never get sick and never not laugh when Bryan and a fan go back with forth yelling yes and no. Holy fuck is Bryan over only Cena and maybe Punk get a stronger reaction than him. So let me get this straight Kane goes nuts and Bryan has to have anger management next week? Jericho vs Ziggler was fine. I figured Jericho was gonna kick out of the zig zag and we would get five or so more minutes. Man Ziggler can't even get his moment as he got a post match beating from a guy that's taking yet another hiatus. The divas battle royal was a shitfest. I figured Kaitlin would eliminate Eve after Eve beat heron Smackdown which was more even Steven booking. Not looking forward to another HHH-Brock match. The ADR-Shemaus feud holds no interest for me mostly because I'm not sure if there's a wrestler in the twenty plus years that I;ve watched that bores me as much as ADR. If only he had half the charisma his ring announcer had. Missed the opening and closing segment which sound like they were good. Shawn Michaels was really good in his speech on HHH's career even if he layed it on a bit too thick.

Three hours makes for a long, long, long show when you're there live.

Nice little "We want Ryder" chant at the beginning of the match, don't know how well it came across on TV. Then the poor guy got murdered to death by Kane again.

Crowd was hot for Punk, and then flipped for Cena when he came out. Cena's kinda acted like a dick throughout this whole deal. He's not very sympathetic. I hope Punk wins at NoC.

Didn't see anyone over the age of 13 walking around with Cena gear on walking around before the show, except for that family of 10 that was at ringside. There were easily more Punk shirts in attendance.

That Divas battle royal was awwwwwful. Killed the crowd.

The reaction for Daniel Bryan is insane. It helps that he looks like a buddy of mine from high school and a local wrestling coach.

The ladies love RKO. He bores me to tears.

Jericho got a nice little Y2J chant when he went up the ramp.

Three hours (four if you get there for Superstars, and why WOULD you want to miss Heath Slater vs. Alex Riley and Santino vs somebody else?)is way too long. About halfway through I wanted to go home.

Somewhere between this hype graphic...

...and the actual match (or should we put "match" in air quotes?) which happened a whole ONE ad break later, we lost Kelly AND Beth.

Seemed especially weird given that Kelly looks like she's got a halo and spotlight surrounding her in that graphic.

This show was SO exciting I only managed 21 tweets over the course of the whole 3:15.

So did Punk name Lawler the #1 Contender or what?

I was ready to deathrant the continued forced heel turn of CM Punk until I read It's False recap. I still can't decide if it's a half-ass attempt at a tweener development of Punk, a backfiring heel turn, or possibly WWE letting the fans decide how to react to CM Punk's neutral actions. If it's the third choice it would be a nice extension on his Summer of Punk that started his main event rise from last year.

I'm interested in CM Punk's path to true respect and the fact that he can go from acting like an ass and still getting cheered, to cutting a promo with just enough heel tinge to get booed the very next minute. Combine that with the fact that Cena most shows at best gets split positive and negative reactions from crowds and it makes for compelling and intricate booking not seen in wrestling since...ever!

I still hate GM AJ. So instead of making a contract vs. contract match between Ziggler and Jericho at the PPV you do it for free on RAW? Also why not just demand that if either guy loses they are out of a job? Why just Jericho? I smell an Evil GM turn coming, or at least fans beginning to turn on her for making decisions such as this with a fan favorite. Well at least I did until.....

...Jericho attacks Ziggler after losing clean? This made no sense at all and would of been more impactful and better booking in the long run to have Ziggler smash Jericho's head in with the briefcase.

Poor Ryder? Seriously before all this Tout and Twitter nonsense got shoved down our throats Ryder was doing it simply to get on TV years ago and this is how he's repaid? Who the fuck's cereal did he shit in to get treated like this? Wellness policy violations? No shows? Racist remarks? Injured The Incredibly Fragile Orton in a match? I don't get what he did to deserve all this or how he stands it?

With the kid, its almost impossible to watch the show for whole 3 hours on top of DVRing Warehouse 13 and Top Gear plus I like sleep. Once AJ made it contract vs. Money in the Bank even the wife said, "I guess Jericho is going on tour, again." Why AJ is doing this for no other reason then "She be crazy." She was in about four segments in the first hour, Christ Punk only got two and Cena got none, she is not that over.

Punk can get himself over as a heel, but my question is why? He got a better pop than Cena did at SummerSlam, hell almost all the time, why turn him. He is the number one merchandise seller which was the giant excuse since 2005 not to turn Cena, but we are turning Punk? It doesn't make any business or storyline sense. Its like if McDonalds was so determined to make the Happy Meal their signature meal that they go out of their way to either make the meals more expensive or not advertise them even if say the Chicken Nugget meal was selling better. I am sure there is a better analogy, but that is what I got.

Can we just remove the US title already if its just going to be a YouTube thing. Speaking of the internet, Ryder might be time to go a very special yet subtle "Fuck you, Creative" episode if his show.

Opening and closing promos were outstanding, and it did feel like there was more actual Wrestling to fill out the middle of the show than endless recaps...or I just flipped over to baseball during those... But yeah, there were a few mid-card feuds advanced.

Wrestlers' tanning is a bit absurd and unnecessary but for the Woo Woo Kid with the Jersey Shore Gimmick, Zack looked surprisingly not-orange last night. At least Cole explained the history between all those tag team members.

Jericho is actually *already* on tour, Fozzy started on the Uproar tour last week.

He kicked Jerry Lawler in the back of the head as Lawler was leaving the ring and showed no remorse. In the world of WWE that is usually to be read as a pure heel act I would think.

If WWE had shown any hint of intelligent booking in the last twelve months I'd suspect that they were sewing seeds for a double turn, with Cena cheating to beat Punk in Boston and Punk's complaints being vindicated. But they're not that smart. They're the opposite of that smart - how else can you describe a company that's fucking up basic characterisation this bad and contradicting its own face/heel dynamics in the space of ninety minutes? It's embarrassing to hear Lawler fall all over himself to excuse Sheamus' heelish tendencies whilst criticizing Punk's actions.

That was one of Cena's best deliveries. He neither went for the dated cartoon reference nor did he yell himself into a clumsy, improvised corner. Stayed on point. Delivered it clean. Great job. Not a great script, mind you.

They have to do this with Punk. They have no one else in the main event to throw at him, so someone has to turn. As long as Cena is a contender, Punk has to be the malleable character. And his new direction isn't so new given his character arc since moving from ECW. He's no longer claiming to be addicted to competition nor does he say he's better than us because of straight edge. But he still upholds the theory of transitive properties. Cena's supposedly the best. Punk has beaten him at least three times in title matches. Therefore Punk should be the best. Cena's resistance to acknowledge him as such fulfills Punk's perception of him. What does Punk have to do to be considered the best? Yes, Punk, what DO you have to do?

I may have summoned Otunga via the WWE13 roster thread. Beware my power, Matt Tracker's light.

But it's so simple (in WWE's mind)
Sheamus does bad things to a bad guy. *
He's giving him his come uppance for being a cocky jerk.

As far as story telling goes, it's not different from Austin's actions in the attitude era. I think he stole more cars & belts than anyone else. Problem is, Sheamus is not Austin, AdR is no Vince or Rock, and well..it's a different day & age.

Punk is claiming that he should be the center of attention at the expense of everyone else.
Do we (his fans) know he is right? Yes.
But his actions are starting to become those of a heel because he is demanding respect through heel tactics.

Oh Lotjx--There is one reason why Punk can be a heel (and Cena cannot). Because he would -still- sell shirts.
The one he has now is boring, but his previous SES shirts with the rosevine and such were awesome. And technically the first 'best in the world' shirt was a heel shirt too.
