Both our standup freezer and our fridge freezer are frosting too much on the insides, and in the fridge freezer's case it's causing the fridge to not stay cool (frost is covering the vents that push cold air into the fridge).

Ordinarily I'd say the fridge is busted, but now this is happening to both freezers. Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

if you are getting a lot of ice build up on the inside of the freezer it means it is possible that the air being cooled to enter the freezer is still containing a lot of water.

The way all refrigeration systems work is that a very cold liquid in a coil has air pass over it and the heat from the air is transferred to the coil, and therefore, the air gets cooler.

When that happens, the air cannot hold as much moisture and there should be some condensation. If you have AC in the house, it might be taking it out there, but if not, it might not be able to remove enough heat from the air because of the moisture it is holding.

Try a dehumidifier, make sure the coils on the back of your fridge and freezer are clean and make sure the air can flow.

Also be sure that you have a good *tight* seal when the door is closed. Even a little outside air seepage can wreak havoc.

I've had a freezer that would "seem" closed, but if the slightest thing was leaning on the inside of the door, it wouldn't really be snugly closed, with that solid "vacuum seal" feeling to the door.

Also-also, any time something weird happens with a fridge/freezer, vacuum the cooling fins to remove dust, cat hair, etc. Although it doesn't sound like it should directly cause your symptoms, fridge/freezers can do weird things if their motors are overheating because they can't achieve the target temperature.

I'm by no means an expert, but I've been having a similar issue with my "no-frost" fridge/freezer.

My local appliance guy said a problem he's been seeing is that the electric companies, to accommodate the increased power needs due to the heat, have lowered the voltage output in many areas. This is causing the fridge to operate on less than optimal juice & can cause frosting & loss of cooling to the fridge.

I've had to defrost my fridge twice in the last 2 months & it's costing me a fortune in food. I ended up buying a cheap used one as a backup in the garage so I don't have to keep tossing food.

Cooling fins have been vacuumed, and it's now been sitting empty and unplugged for 30 hours now. Last time I kept it unplugged for six hours, and it frosted up again.

We'll see what happens this time around.
