TONIGHT: The road to Money in the Bank begins…will we see anyone else announced for that match? Also, who challenges for the WWE Title at that PPV? And what of John Cena, after Big Show seemed to indicate he was over him on Smackdown? Chris Jericho is scheduled to return too. All that, and Vickie Guerrero as guest GM…next.

-WWE Open.

-Strangely, they went to commercials. Then a video package on the Kane-Daniel Bryan-CM Punk-AJ situation.

-AJ was talking to some people backstage. It was apparently Bryan, Kane, and Punk. But we could only see AJ talking. She indicated she was ready to move on from Bryan, but said she could lose her inhibitions with Kane. However, he’s not a man, but a monster. She told Punk that she thinks of them as soulmates, but she overcomplicated things trying to guess what Punk was thinking. The camera panned around AJ to reveal she was talking to a mirror. She said they should all go their separate ways.

-RAW Open.

-The announcers opened the show live from Indiana.

-They showed that last month, Brodus Clay was knocked out by Big Show. Clay will be back on Raw for the first time since he was banned from the show, to take on Big Show. Wasn’t his ban like only a few weeks ago? That must’ve been a Johnny Ace directive.

-John Cena Tweeted earlier that he has a big announcement tonight.

-Vickie Guerrero came out as the guest GM for the evening. She expected to become the permanent GM of Raw and Smackdown on Raw episode #1,000. And to show she’s serious, we’re starting with a three-way elimination match.

(1) Daniel Bryan vs. Kane vs. CM Punk – Three-Way Elimination Match
During Punk’s entrance, they put up on the screen a Twitter vote, asking fans who they think AJ should be with. Kane fought off both adversaries in the early going, until Bryan went after his knee. Punk and Bryan teamed up to put the boots to Kane, who was sent to ringside. Punk attempted a surfboard as AJ was shown watching backstage. Punk actually made it into a Curb Stomp for two. Punk was going to suicide dive onto Kane, but Kane gave him an uppercut. He sent Bryan spine-first into the ringside barricade. Match continues after the break, 2:10 into the match.

[Commercial Break]

Back 5:13 in. Kane was raining blows upon the mid-section of Kane. Kane, to the top, was stopped by Bryan. Punk put Bryan on his shoulders and Kane went for a clothesline, but Bryan ducked and rolled Punk up. Kane tried a double chokeslam, which turned into Bryan and Punk suplexing Kane. Punk and Bryan had a nice exchange and Kane was low-bridged onto the floor. Punk launched Bryan over the top and onto the Big Red Monster as well. Suicide dive took out both of Punk’s foes. Back in the ring, Punk fought out of the Yes Lock and catapulted Bryan into Kane, who was on the apron. Cover, but Bryan got the outside leg on the bottom rope. GTS, but Kane booted Punk down for a near-fall at 8:42. Lawler complimented Vickie for making this match. Clothesline off the top rope by Kane. As he set up for the chokeslam, AJ skipped down to ringside and around the ring. The distraction allowed Punk to counter the chokeslam and hit the GTS for the pinfall at 9:55. As Punk got to his knees, Bryan surprised him with a kick to the head for the win.

Winner: Bryan, at 10:10. Pretty fun match with very little downtime.

-Vickie Guerrero was watching the show on the monitor in her office when Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez walked in. Del Rio fawned over Vickie and had Ricardo give her flowers. Ricardo didn’t have the vase though, so that angered ADR. Dolph Ziggler walked in and asked for one more shot at the World Title. The two men began to argue, but Vickie said she’s going to put them in a contract on a pole match, with the winner facing Sheamus on Friday night. Ricardo walked in with the flowers in the vase. Ziggler took them and smashed it into the wall. Somehow, that made ADR upset at Ricardo again.

-Next, Big Show vs. Brodus Clay.

[Commercial Break]

(2) Brodus Clay vs. The Big Show
Clay countered a big slap, but Show stopped him. Off the ropes, headbutt to the chest took Show off his feet. Show kicked the injured knee of Clay and went to work with an elbowdrop. Show wrapped Clay’s knee around the ringpost for added damage. Show went to the second rope and actually hit the Vader bomb. The Funkadactyls sold concern at ringside. Clay fought back when Show signaled for the knockout blow. Attempted bodyslam but the knee gave out and Show collapsed on top of Clay for the pinfall.

Winner: Show, at 2:32. Well, it was short, and Clay has the injury for an out.

Show walked to the back as a trainer checked on Clay.

-John Cena will have an announcement that will make history.

-The announcers talked about Cena granting his 300th Wish. We then saw a video package on it.

[Commercial Break]

-Bob Barker talked about his appearance on Raw for Raw 1,000.

-The announcers talked about the aftermath of the Clay vs. Show match, where Clay was being helped to the back only to be knocked out by a Show punch. It happened during the break.

-Triple H’s remarks from No Way Out were shown, as were clips of his confrontation with Paul Heyman on Raw last week. Next week, Brock Lesnar answers Triple H’s Summerslam challenge. What about another lawsuit for Hunter punching Heyman?

-AJ was backstage talking to someone again. This time, it’s a real person: Kane. Kane said he’s not one with his feelings, but AJ makes him feel things he never thought possible. He said it’s not a good thing and while it may come as a shock to her, he’s not boyfriend material. “I don’t do relationships.” Kane said his only source of pleasure is eviscerating people…and even HE finds AJ mentally unstable. He said they just need to stay away from each other. AJ seemed crushed and started crying…no wait, check that: laughing.

[Commercial Break]

(3) Jack Swagger vs. Santino Marella – United States Championship Match
No entrance for Swagger. Swagger immediately took Santino down and aggressively went after him in the corner. Santino replied with a corner attack of his own. Santino threatened Swagger with a Cobra, chasing him around the ring. Big slam by Swagger for two at 1:07. Side suplex by Santino and both men were down at 1:51. Marella kipped up and went after Swagger. Hip-toss then a diving headbutt. The Cobra appeared, but Swagger picked Santino up. Marella countered with a DDT then properly set up the Cobra. It struck and Santino won.

Winner: Marella, at 2:40. Santino has quietly held this belt since January. I’m sure it can get worse for Swagger, but man, he’s in a bad way right now.

-Later tonight, a Divas Summertime Beach Battle Royal.

-John Cena was walking backstage. Inside a box that said “free to a good home” were People Power t-shirts. Zack Ryder showed up, took a shirt from Cena, and stuffed it in the trash. Cena is out next.

[Commercial Break]

-John Cena came out. He talked his earlier Tweet. Cena talked about how Raw has been turned upside down, then compared Johnny Ace’s regime and the turn of Big Show to Star Wars. This was one of those over-scripted promos, but the crowd liked it and it was at least creative. The Star Wars comparison went on for a while and Cena wanted to reveal his historic announcement, but first, the lights went out and Chris Jericho’s music played. Jericho walked out in a sparkly jacket, t-shirt and jeans. They showed highlights of Fozzy on tour in Europe.

“Cena, what in the hell are you talking about?” asked Jericho. Jericho told Cena to make the announcement and shut the hell up. Cena tried to catch Jericho up on what has happened, including Big Show throwing his proverbial hat in the ring at Money in the Bank. Cena said in order to stop Big Show, he’s putting himself in the MITB match. Cena reminded Jericho that everyone who has cashed in the briefcase has won the title. He should know since he’s had it cashed in on him more than once; he said it’d be nice to be on the other side for once. Cena promised to win the whole fudgin’ thing. Jericho made fun of Cena for that, asking if he was nine. Cena said most of the Raw viewers are around that age. WWE wishes – that’s not even close to being true.

Jericho chastised Cena for just thinking he’s going to waltz into the MITB and win just because he’s John Cena. Jericho reminded Cena he invented the match in 2005, and he’s been in three. Cena countered that Jericho has won none of them. “You’re always so smug, aren’t you Cena?” Jericho told Cena the MITB match was not a joke and it’s not something he does for fun. “If you want fun, go in a bouncy house or do another Star Wars promo.” Jericho said there’s nobody who has been in more ladder matches than him. He said MITB is a career-threatening match and that Cena needs to stop HIM and not Show. Jericho said he’s entering himself into the match too. They make it look so easy! Can I just say I’m in too and get a spot?

Vickie Guerrero came out and cleared some things up. She said there’d be two MITB matches: One for the WWE Title and one for the World Title. She said no one can just put themselves in a match. Jericho interrupted and Vickie yelled at him. “What are you going to do, suspend me?” he asked. Vickie said the Board has decreed that only former WWE Champions can compete in the WWE Title MITB match. That means Kane, Jericho, Show and Cena will be in the match. Cena said it was a great idea and told Vickie to just take advice from the Board of Directors and don’t make any decisions on her own. But she’s got control of Raw, so tonight, Cena will take on Jericho. Did she just say “for the first-time ever”?

-They showed a close-up of the locker-room door with 1,000 Raw on it. It’s for the surprise tonight, as two weeks ago, Vader showed up. Last week, it was Mick Foley as interim GM, and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Next, another Superstar who hasn’t been on Raw in 15 years.

[Commercial Break]

-Lilian Garcia was going to introduce someone, but Heath Slater’s theme interrupted. He came to the ring and took the mic from Garcia. They showed his run in with the Legends last week. Slater again called himself the One Man Band. He said he doesn’t care what any of the legends think about him. He called himself one of the top Superstars on Raw. “I am Heath Slater, and I rule the world!” Cue Sid’s theme and the big man walked out.

(4) Heath Slater vs. Sycho Sid
Didn’t sound like a great reaction coming out, but pretty decent one once he got into the ring. Slater cornered Sid and shoved him. Sid slapped Slater in the chest, then punched him off the top rope. Spinebuster by Sid, but a right hand missed. Slater kicked at the leg of Sid and got him down to his knees. Sid no-sold some elbows and clotheslined Slater. Leg-drop, then he yelled for a Powerbomb. It landed and Sid made the pin.

Winner: Sid, at 1:29. I am satisfied.

-Still to come, the Summertime Beach Battle Royal.

-Also tonight: John Cena vs. Chris Jericho.

[Commercial Break]

-The announcers talked about Raw 1,000 and Jerry Lawler said WWE.com has announced the Raw celebrity social media ambassador. I guess it’s someone who is going to Tweet during Raw 1,000.

(5) Alberto Del Rio vs. Dolph Ziggler – World Title #1 Contender Contract on a Pole Match
Ziggler quickly tried to climb the turnbuckle, but Del Rio stopped him. After kicking Ziggler in the corner, he tried for the contract. He ran into a back elbow from Ziggler, then gave him a Tilt-A-Whirl back-breaker. Del Rio again tried to go after the contract, but again Ziggler pulled him down. Side Russian leg sweep by Ziggler, who had the crowd behind him. Ziggler dodged another back-breaker and hit a dropkick. Ziggler sprinted the length of the apron to try to get to the corner and the contract, but he was halted. Del Rio stood on the middle rope and Ziggler got on Del Rio’s back to get it. Samoan Drop off the middle rope by Del Rio. The two again got on the top on the same time. Ziggler pulled the contract down but it spilled into the ring. The guys would alternate getting their hands on the contract and the other knocking it away. They both had it at the same time but fought against each other. Rodriguez ran in to get it, but Ziggler kicked him in the hands, sending the contract flying to ringside. The men scrambed after it and both spilled through the ropes on the other side of the ring. As they recovered at 4:31, Sheamus walked out with a mic. He told them that he spoke to Vickie and she informed him that both men would fight in him in a Triple-Threat match for the World Title.

Winner: No Contest (no bell), around 4:31. Good timing on some of the fumbling contract stuff, which isn’t always easy.

Sheamus continued, saying the match won’t be about showing off or about destiny, but about him kicking their arse.

-Who does the WWE Unvierse think A.J. should be with? CM Punk first with 51% and Daniel Bryan second with 27%. Those numbers via Twitter.

-Cole and King took us back to the opening of Raw, a three-way elimination match between Kane, Daniel Bryan and CM Punk. Again, AJ distracted Kane, which allowed Punk to recover and hit the GTS on him. Then Punk was kicked in the head, allowing Bryan to win. As a result, just signed to Money in the Bank, Punk vs. Bryan for the WWE Title.

-Punk was ending a phone conversation when AJ put her eyes over Punk and told him to “guess who?” It was not, in fact, King Kong Bundy, as Punk predicted. AJ apologized for how things went earlier, but she dedicated her upcoming Divas Summertime Battle Royal win to him. Punk said they need to sit down and discuss this relationship and AJ said she’s not averse to taking things to the next level. That wasn’t what Punk seemed to be hinting at, but she walked off before he could respond. Battle Royal is next.

[Commercial Break]

-Raw 1,000 Moment from Mick Foley: The Rock’s “This is Your Life,” from September 1999.

(6) Divas Summertime Battle Royal
Natalya, Aksana, Maxine, AJ, Rosa, Alicia Fox, Layla, Kaitlyn, Tamina, and Beth were in the ring for the Battle Royal in their swimsuits. Vickie Guerrero walked out and declared People Power dead. Then she announced Vickie Power and told the women they should be on her good side. She had a robe on and got music as she unveiled her outfit. The Divas reacted with varying degrees of horror. Al the Divas teamed up on Vickie, who crawled to a corner as everyone paired off. Maxine was out at :13. Aksana out at :19. This is not over the top rules. Fox was out at :30 and Kaitlyn at :35. Rosa just before that as well. Tamina out at :45. Beth and Natalya teamed up on Layla, but Beth bumped Layla out at :58 and Beth was tossed by Layla at 1:03. Down to Layla, Vickie and AJ. Layla went after Vickie, but AJ stopped her. Layla was on the apron and a distraction by Beth allowed her to be tossed at 1:26. Vickie thought she eliminated AJ, but AJ held up on the apron. Vickie yelled at AJ and pushed her twice. AJ jumped Vickie and pounded away. Vickie tried to leave and AJ helped her by kicking her out.

Winner: AJ, at 2:08. At least it had girls in bikinis. Other than that, it may have been one of the worst Battle Royals ever.

AJ led the crowd in a “yes” chant for her win.

-Up next, John Cena vs. Chris Jericho for the first time in almost two years.

[Commercial Break]

-Friday night, it’s a triple-threat match for the World Title when Sheamus defends against Alberto Del Rio and Dolph Ziggler.

(7) Chris Jericho vs. John Cena
Pretty much nothing happened before they went to break at :58 of the match.

[Commercial Break]

Back at 3:49 of the match with Cena stuck in a side headlock. Cena powered out and hammered away on Jericho. Jericho got his boot up on a charge then hit a second-rope dropkick. Cover got two at 4:24. Back suplex from Jericho. Jericho continued his slow offense as Cole reset the show at the 11:00 hour. Rear chinlock to further excite those fans just tuning in. Cena worked out and headbutted Jericho, only to fall victim to a high elbow. Jericho landed on his feet on a Lionsault attempt, but Cena went into his signature moves. Five-knuckle shuffle, but Jericho tried a Walls, much to the appreciation of the vocal males. They continued to counter each other until Cena connected on the Five-Knuckle Shuffle. At 7:40, Big Show’s music played and he came out. Jericho rolled Cena up off an Attitude Adjustment attempt. Jericho hooked in the Walls, but Show entered the ring and leg-dropped the back of Cena’s neck.

Winner: Cena, via disqualification, at 8:17.

Jericho seemed upset at the loss, but slinked out of the ring and let Show have at Cena. Chokeslam on Cena by Show. Remember that “deadly” submission Show used to do? Yeah, he did it here to Cena. “The Colossal Clutch,” apparently. They went off the air after Show finally broke the hold.

So surely they will add Mysterio and Miz to the MITB match as they return over the next couple weeks, maybe Del Rio if he loses. Then they'll have people who can actually do stuff. I kind of have a fascination with seeing how a straight Cena/Jericho/Kane/Show ladder match would play out.

Figure Dolph is being set up to take the other "suitcase." Lack of distinction means Cody loses out on his. Cena wins, challenges Daniel Bryan* at SummerSlam, and hopefully is the first guy to blow the shot since they can get it out of the way and it won't hurt him -- and at SS, Cena won't be going on last for once.

* between AJ and the frequent mentions of how long his reign has been, Punk is doomed.

Many an assumption made in this post.

How incredible is it that AJ is the focus of RAW, getting the opening recap video and multiple segments all about her?

Cena/Jericho rematch at SummerSlam as Chris' temporary farewell again? Rematch of their SummerSlam match in D.C. I got to witness in person.

Sid....whoa.

I looked up the roster to see who else counts, for either brand:

Christian (if he isn't in another match with Cody)
Del Rio (if he isn't facing Sheamus)
Great Khali (groan)

Aside from the guys you mentioned, and Suspended Randall, that's it, right? (Well there's the Taker...and Hunter...and Brock...obviously they're all out.)

Sid made this show for me. When he came out my first thought was, "Man, he looks awful!" Then I realized it's been 11 year since he snapped his ankle in two and in that regard, he looked pretty okay otherwise. Very older rednecky, like he walked out of a remake of Deliverance.

WWE could book the aborted main event of Starrcade 1993 any time they want now.

And then there will be Sheen.

I mostly enjoyed tonight's offering.

AJ skipping around the ring is still fun, but it felt a little like taking a step back from last week's version. The skip didn't even seem as sassy. Only 8% of the people know where AJ really belongs.

Did Jericho have some work done around the eyes? Why did he look so weird? Too much Euro rock? I'm just glad he blasted that terrible Cena Star Wars promo.

"Most our audience is nine", sweet comeback.

I even liked the Diva's Battle Royal, heck I even enjoyed Vickie in a swimsuit.

I like mean Big Show, but not as much as Mark Henry. Cena should do what Hogan did after taking a beating from a fatso and tape his ribs next week. The circle of life would feel more complete. That being said I don't care about this feud.

    So surely they will add Mysterio and Miz to the MITB match as they return over the next couple weeks, maybe Del Rio if he loses.

I totally forgot about Miz. Dollars to donuts Miz takes this break and does nothing to change his character.

Sid held up okay. The thing about Sid is if he was main eventing or in the title hunt for your company you knew the other company was doing better. They should have let him cut a promo.

This is fine and good until there's a podcast on my phone tomorrow with 25 minutes of Meltzer explaining in enormous detail how most of the audience is much closer to 39. Darn you, Cena.

I wonder if they will take the belt off Punk as "punishment" for some of the things he said about Cena on the Colt podcast last week.

They've done less pettier things.

FX

Things I should have tweeted earlier (or some things I did):

I love Vickie as much as I don't care about AJ.

Jericho's short hair is as wrong as Jack Swagger's growin' out hair.

Closeup Sid looks a lot like Scott Hall. I think it's the stubble + chin.

I guess it's not coincidental that Dolph has been booked in heel vs. #heel matchups two weeks in a row to give the crowd a tryout cheering him on as a de facto face, but the crowd was RABID for him to turn as far back as the PPV. And, as is their wont, WWE simply won't pull that trigger until interest dies down and cools off because WWE is all about Striking While The Iron Has Been Dunked Back in the Water. Now Ziggler still has Vickie when he doesn't need her, and Swagger is jobbing to Santino Marella's Cobra Sock.

Who comes back first, Clay or Tensai? (Clay.)

Sid! Him returning was sufficient to get me to check out RAW for a bit this week. I never thought that I'd see him back in the ring again. It was disappointing that the announcers didn't mention his WCW title reigns.

Even funnier is that you've got, supposedly, the two best wrestlers in the world in a program with the WWE championship on the line... and the main focus is AJ. This company is making it way too easy on me to not like or care about these guys.

Seeing Sid in the ring again put a huge smile on my face. Glad he was able to do this.

Out here in the Cox/Phoenix version of the Pacific feed, we got a more screwed up opening. Canned open. Video package on the situation. Crowd noise. Backstage to AJ, (not) talking to Daniel, then Kane, then "And Punk, I like to think of us as..." Adbreak. Commercial for Cox Business services cuts in right in the middle of her piece. Local lawyer commercial. The Raw open. So we never got to see what she had to say to Punk, nor the resolution. Fortunately, I know where to find a comprehensive recap that will tell me what we missed!! (Amusingly, the crux of the Cox commercial was "when things absolutely have to go right." Good job, Cox.)

Hey btw let's pre-emptively not be surprised and dismayed when the Cena MITB match goes last on the PPV. I hope he puts a spinner on the suitcase.

Vader, Mankind, Sid, Shawn, and possibly Undertaker are all returning for Raw1000. So, just the cast from the 1996 fourth season. Ahmed Johnson and Zip will round out the appearances.

I thought Jericho was a bit tweener-ish tonight (or at least directly appealing to the anti-Cena vote, both by calling him smug and calling him a nine year old). At any rate, he wasn't being "crap on the fans" robo-Jericho, and I liked him being looser and more relaxed. Main event, that said, was just crappy.

How ridiculous is it listening to Cole and Cena all talking about Show being indestructible and unstoppable? Not only did he just lose at the last PPV, he's been in the WWE for thirteen effing years, on and off, during which he has lost to virtually everyone. The only way to redeem this ridiculous tear they've put Show on will be if they sacrifice him to get over a returning Mark Henry as a face. But I still won't want to watch him do anything until then Mark's breaking his ankle again.

I did laugh when Cole wondered if he or Lawler could grab the contract when it fell on the floor in front of them.

For the sake of my sanity, I hope a returning Rey is added to the WWE MitB match and will then openly cash it in at Summerslam against either Daniel Bryan, C.M. Punk or a combination thereof. Please, please, let Cena and Show cancel each other out somehow. Please.

So it's Cena/Show/Kane/Jericho and the rule for the WWE title MITB is 'ex-champs only.' It stands to reason that the World title MITB could also be ex-world champs only. That leaves...

Both
* Orton
* Sheamus (if he loses on Friday, which I doubt...my guess is it'll be Sheamus vs. Del Rio in a singles bout at the PPV)
* Mysterio
* Undertaker...very unlikely, but hey, if he's already back for RAW 1000, maybe he feels like taking a few bumps in a PPV main event. A Taker win and a promise to cash it in at Wrestlemania would be a great 'looming menace' for the champ, whether it be Cena, Sheamus or Punk heading into Mania.

WWE
* Del Rio
* Miz
* Lesnar...having Brock be a shock last-minute entry to win the briefcase would actually be awesome, and a great to have him make another surprise return to cash it in a few months down the road

World
* Great Khali
* Ziggler
* Christian
* Swagger
* Mark Henry
* Booker T

I was thinking about this too ... but then thought that the WWE Championship would actually go on last ... Bryan beats Punk via AJ shenanigans ... Cena, with his freshly-won briefcase, cashes in, beats Bryan & sets up Cena vs. Punk at SummerSlam ... not to mention, Cena is WWE Champion at RAW 1K.

you can see it coming from a mile away ...

I think they went in the wrong direction with the Sting part. They should have shown the Clash 1 match (although it may be too similar to the Windham draw).
