Randy Johnson has pulled himself out of the All Star Game. If the guy was having arm trouble I could understand, but pulling yourself so you can rest up until Thursday seems like a weak reason.

Go out there sign some balls and pitch an inning for the fans.

This would have been unheard of in earlier days when players prided themselves in being All Stars.

I was disappointed to find out Matt Morris won't be playing in the game. Now the Cardinals have exactly 0 representatives. I wish in a case like that they would take a replacement from the same team so they could have someone there.

Morris sites emotional stress after the loss of Kile plus back spasms, so I'm not upset there. But yeah, when I heard on ESPNEWS that Johnson couldn't pitch an inning or two because he had to rest for a start two days later (on 5 days rest anyway), I was kind of upset. A lot of players are backing out of the game, and it just confirms the fears they just aren't grateful to do what they do for a living.

hmmm... Mark M. pulled himself out of the All Star game before due to resting his injury.... but i seem to remember someone else doing this to better prepare for the second half. Pedro maybe?

I've torn myself apart.... and tried to figure out why... but the only answer i was ever given... that really fits..... is the fact... that women are crazy.

Seems like you're reaching for things to complain about here. I can't see blaming players who don't particularly want to be in the All-Star Game, considering that, y'know, the All-Star Game sucks.

Why do you say it sucks?

Well you're half right. Someone is stretching for things to complain about. Why is it anymore "boring" than any other baseball game?

Wow, great point. Yeah, I was just going to post a topic about how "people complaining about players skipping the All-Star Game bother me", but you beat me to it with this topic. I was just dying to bitch about this super significant subject! You're reading me like a damn book! How do you do it, I ask you? HOW???

Why is it anymore "boring" than any other baseball game?
Because:
- It doesn't count
- The players and managers, very logically, play it like it doesn't count
- Interleague play has made it much less interesting
- In this satellite dish/ESPN baseball contract world, you can have plenty of opportunities to see the star players, which also makes it much less interesting

Okay?

I still find in entertaining because we generally get a nice dose of appreciation for the game's great history. However, today's players don't seem to give a damn about that history, as evidenced by their passing up the opportunity to participate in it. That is why it bothers me.

Also, the all-star game provides a rare opportunity to see players actually having fun, and that is because "it doesn't count." How often during the regular season do you see the best players in the game (or at least the ones who don't decide they are above it) joking around on the field, while still trying to win?

There are several reasons why the allstar game can be considered boring... for example, the American League taking FIVE shortstops? Not two or three, but FIVE? Give me a break... Plus, if I wanted to see the Yankees, I'd turn on Fox every Saturday afternoon because they are ALWAYS on there. I personally don't blame Johnson, Pedro, or any other player for skipping the game - the goal in baseball is to win the World Series, at ANY cost (well at least according to George from New York). I wonder if skipping the game also has something to do with the looming labour dispute, and some guys just won't admit that.

notwithstanding the sucktitude of All Star games. If you are a top player and is invited to it. YOU should go, bottom line.

Please, tell me why they should go?

Aside from being a "nice guy", they have no real reason to go. It's not in their contract, and they don't get fined or suspended if they don't go.

If they want to make players attend the all-star game, fine them or suspend them if they don't, give a prize to the winning team, but as far as I'm concerned, the players don't volunteer to go to the game, so give them a break.

I seem to remember a time when players actually played the All-Star game like they actually, y'know, wanted to win it. 'Course, that's not really the case now, and we can get into the whole Cal Ripken's homer from last year if we really want to (but I'd rather not). It's turned into a gimmick game, plain and simple; like it for what it is, or don't. Personally speaking, if I'm home tomorrow night, I'll watch it; if not, I don't plan on losing any sleep if I miss it.

I'm assuming Randy's not even making the trip up there; does anyone know if Morris and Glavine are still making the trip?

Morris will be on the bench, Glavine will not.

While you guys don't care about the game, there are obviously a lot of people who do. These players owe it to these fans to perform. The fans want to see them, but the players can't seem to appreciate that. If tens of thousands of people payed and traveled to see me do what I (in theory) love to do, you bet your ass I'd be there.

There isn't an all star game out there that is worth watching as a serious sports fan. The NBA & NHL play games that don't even remotely resemble their day to day sport. Football plays at a time when most of the players invited haven't been playing for close to a month. Baseball quit trying when the American League finally ended their embarassing losing streak. Hell, the Home Run Derby used to be more exciting than the game but now players even pull out of that - just like the lame duck slam dunk contest. These games are supposed to be showcases for the fans but today's athlete for the most part could care less about the fans - the almighty dollar does all their thinking for them.

If it weren't for a tribute to Ted Williams I wouldn't be watching tomorrow night and when that is over, I will probably change the channel to something like a re-run of Frasier - I will only glance at the headlines on Wednesday when I read the newspaper.

The players and owners don't "owe" the fans anything, nor do the fans "owe" the players and owners anything.

That's the exact attitude that has given pro baseball players the stuck up, selfish, spoiled, greedy, ungrateful, ignorant, self-centered imoage they have in society today.

See, the only thing baseball has going for it is its history. Baseball can't come close to matching the drama game in and game out that football and basketball can. So to sell itself, they rely on the great drive for records by its players. Luis Castillo chases Dimaggio. Big Mac and Sammy chase Maris. A pitchers final out of a perfect game. These are the moments baseball fans live for, and they happen rarely enough that the typical baseball game is rather uneventful. So it only hurts for fans to have a poor relationship with their fans. If players don't even respect the game's history, if they aren't awed by the fact that they are playing in a game where legends and heroes like Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Bob Gibson, and any other great player from the last 70 years, then why should fans give a shit about the game of baseball as a whole?

So wait:

You're telling me that these people, paid to perform, don't owe their customers anything? As much fun as my work would be if they followed the same precepts, that just wouldn't happen. If I acted like the only reason I went to work every day was because I felt like it and none other, then eventually the customers would get sick of me and just leave.

Now, I know that baseball, like all other professional sports leagues, works differently in terms of customer interaction. (Obvious statement of the day.) However, if you go to a baseball game, you "owe" the team money - money to get in, money for food, etc. If you watch a game on TV/radio, you "owe" the team money, although indirectly - your viewership determines who buys TV ads, radio ads, etc. Granted, it's not really your money, but it determines SOMEONE'S money, and that's my point. Personally speaking, I'd be appeasing the people who pay my salary. Maybe I'm different from most.

If you want to say that it's not good for business for them to skip the game, then fine, say that. I'd still disagree that it makes any real measurable financial difference... but at least it is WAY more defensible than making it into some sort of moral issue or referendum on peoples' character.
