Unbelievable. I "'Spos" anything can happen. If THIS trade goes through, I'm CONVINCED there will be a strike, just to spite me. But then again, if ther eis no strike....and if the Expos could land Floyd AND Demptser....LOOK THE _____ OUT!

On June 27th, 2002, the Montreal Expos (number one on the MLB contraction list) added MONEY to their payroll, aquiring Bartolo Colon. In a time like this, there's two quotes that come to the forefront;

(sighs) I hate baseball.

If this trade goes through this Marlin fan is done with this sport. Period.

However, I will point out that less than week ago someone asked Cliff about going back to Montreal (he has a no-trade clause) and his response was less than positive. Someting to the extent of there's no way I'm going back there.

Also, I guess I should point out, for some reason, that the Expos didn't add any money to their payroll on that Colon trade. They can't, MLB won't let them.

Edit...again: Okay, I guess Floyd took Montreal off his no-trade list and replaced them with the Giants. Oh well, I've come to terms with him leaving anyway, but there is no reason, NONE, to trade Dempster. They can't justify it, I don't care who the get, short of Javier Vazquez, and we all know it ain't happening. I mean, yeah, no one goes to the games, but hell, their payroll is small anyway. If this trade happens Loria is a son of a bitch, period. They need to move this team or contract them. I refuse to abandon my team (I will abandon the entire sport though), so baseball needs to give me no choice and get rid of them.

According to the article, Pavano (whose been doing great in the minors) and a middle reliever could be sent as part of the deal. That'll help the saleries. The combined worth of Floyd and Dempster is only 4.5 Million.

EDIT: BHSR, Loria screwed us Expos fans for how long? We could've told you he'd be doing this stuff to Florda

Peter Gammons: "Montreal's Omar Minaya tried to swing a big deal to get Floyd and Dempster, but couldn't make the money even out, and MLB will not allow the Expos to take on any payroll."

That's from yesterday. Now, obviously, it doesn't mean it's dead, but I think it's less likely than some other sources are making it sound. Gammons also said:

"The bad news, of course, is that the Marlins are barely drawing 10,500 customers a night, about 2,000 more than owner Jeffrey Loria's former team in Montreal. Loria's stepson, club president David Samson, estimates that they will lose $20 million this season. But Samson quickly adds "things are going very well off the field. We are out working on selling for next season, and we are encouraged. Remember, we had no sales period. People didn't know if there would be a franchise in South Florida for awhile. We didn't get the team until Feb. 16, and there were 300 season tickets sold. We got to 4,000, which isn't bad under the circumstances, but it will be much better next season because we have had time to sell."

In Samson's view, the most important ingredient in selling South Florida on this ownership "is convincing them that we're not going to be contracted and we're not going to move the team. We're not a candidate for contraction and we're not moving the Marlins, but people here are keptical, and Jeffrey and I do not blame them. We've spent a great deal of time with business, community, political and economic leaders because that's what we have to do, and we know that the proof is going to come in nine months when there is an Opening Day with the Florida Marlins, then 12 months after that when there's another Opening Day in 2004. This is a five-year process of building trust that we're here to stay."

That all sounds good, but I don't buy it for one second. They just got done rebuilding this damn team and now they're going to do it again? What's the point?

You know what I find interesting is Montreal is going to be contracted after this season if the CBA gets done. Isn't it odd that Bartolo Colon, Floyd and Dempster are going to a team that will not exist after this year? These guys will all be in some sort of dispersal draft along with Vald Guerrero. And guess where all the names will end up... eventually.

I hadn't even thought of that yet. If it happens, that's going to be a pretty loaded draft (or lottery, or whatever they would use) at the top.

I like the idea of a loaded draft at the top... add vidro to the mix there and you've got a good top 5. I dont want to see contraction... but if it happens the bottom teams have a decent chance to pick up some good talent.

Whose near the top that if there's a lottery then they may have a chance to land a franchise players?

Selig's Brewers of course....

I for one hope Montreal wins their division and gets to the NLCS, just as a less than subtle way of giving the baseball world a big middle finger on their way out the door (if it even happens).

They can't go to the World Series of course, because only one team goes from each league and the Cardinals already have their tickets in hand.

No one's getting contracted. Moved, maybe. But contraction would 1) be completely unacceptable to the union, and 2) would get the government representatives of whichever locality was contracted EXTREMELY mad, which in turn would risk the sport's much-prized antitrust exemption. Contraction is just a bluff to be used against cities that don't want to build stadiums, and against the union.

hmmmm..... i agree... i would love to see the expos go far enough to face the cards... and put on one hell of a series .... to go down fighting... just as a huge sign that the whole baseball system is messed up. I want the government to step in and remove the antitrust exemption.

Montreal has absolutely no argument here though. They're good now and still no one cares up there. I don't even remember hearing that big of a complaint when they were talking about contracting them before. Couldn't they contract Toronto and Montreal and thus give Congree nothing to go on there? The union is the biggest hurdle, but if they expanded the other teams rosters I think they'd go for it.

Also, if that did do a dispersal draft, would it really matter who was at the top of the draft? Those teams can't afford those guys anyway. They'd take prospects or trade the picks.

That's probably the most realistic contraction scenario if theere is one. But, Toronto has in fact proven to be a pretty good baseball market. So, unless the Toronto owner is in on the plan like Selig's buddy in Minnesota was and agrees to sell his team for less than it's worth, it would cost the other 28 owners a lot of money (as in, many hundreds of millions of US dollars) to get rid of him because that's what the team is worth.

People, the logic behind the Expos' move to get Floyd and Dempster is simple. Remember back in '94, when the Expos were beating the life out of everybody? That's right, that was the strike year. The philosophies behind this year are much the same; if the Expos can land Floyd and Dempster, the resulting turmoil will somehow see the Expos at the top of the NL East - just in time for another strike. .... I hate this reasoning.

Baseball is out to get the 'Spos.
