My Gameboy Advance died on me over the weekend. I loved that thing. I finally had a reason to upgrade to something else, so I got a PSP3001.

A few questions...

It came with Assassin's Creed Bloodlines and Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles. They seem okay so far, but the Castlevania game is a little boring. Any suggestions?

Will it play games off the internet without modding it? I'd rather not risk fucking it up, but one friend says if I don't do this then I'm just carrying around a paperweight. He's a nerd like that. I do wanna play some old PS1 games on it though, like Vagrant Story and XenoGears and SaGa Frontier, which would be cool.

What's the battery life on these things? The power cord is kinda bulky and I don't wanna carry it around all the time.

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

Re: "games off the internet," Guru frowns pretty heavily on piracy talk here (I'll assume you're just asking about homebrew software, but same techniques, legal grey area, yadda yadda yadda).

I didn't play my PSP a ton, since I had a PSP Go and found that I kept accidentally powering the machine off. Mostly I played Puzzle Quest, Crazy Taxi, and Katamari which sound like they'd not at all be your thing.

You can easily softmod the thing with no risk at all, which will let you play some of the quality homebrew software such as the PSP port of Cave Story, as well as emulation if that's your thing. Both PS1 and PSP games are available for download at an affordable price from the PSN, too.

Also, get one of these things: http://www.amazon.com/MicroSD-MicroSDHC-Adapter-Converts-Cards/dp/B001RPEJA4 along with two 8GB micro SD cards for more space than you'll ever know what to do with.

Anyway, get Half Minute Hero, it's awesome. Vagrant Story and Xenogears are available on PSN as well, and there's a pretty good remake of Final Fantasy Tactics available. Don't miss Mega Man Powered Up or the remake of Mega Man X, either.

Using the PSP (or for that matter, the PS Vita) for PSone games is a nice idea, but having only one L and R button and only one analog stick (and not a button, like L3 or whatever) really hampers the experience.

I got a PSP back in 2008.. it gathered a lot of dust but lately it's been my system of choice. It seems like you like RPGs so there really is an abundance of good games out there for it.

If you meant downloading PS1 games off of the PS network, you pay and it's completely legit and legal.

Here's my list of suggestions:

Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core (action-y prequel to FF7)

Ys 7 (PSP standalone sequel to the excellent series. If you're not familiar, it's an action RPG, very cool. If you like it, there is also Ys 6, Ys Oath of Felghana, and Ys 1 and 2)

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (someone mentioned Final Fantasy Tactics, this is similar to that type of game)

The 3rd Birthday (Parasite Eve series continues, but this is more of a shooter with less RPG elements- still a good game for me)

Final Fantasy IV The Complete Collection (Includes the FF4 sequel After Years, and is a really well done set)

What? How did I not know this existed? I loved the Parasite Eve games.

Guess you just missed out. Came out last year. It doesn't have Parasite Eve in the title, so that might be why. You can probably score it new for $20 or less nowadays.

It got mixed reviews- I like it, playing through now actually. Cool story.. basically Aya is sent back in time to prevent an alien attack that changes the face of civilization..

So the action of the game is basically Aya possessing soldiers bodies and shooting the enemy. Sometimes, say there are five good guys on the field, you can possess one until his energy runs low, then hide him and let him regain energy while you possess another one.. This was a cool dynamic IMO

There is some customization, and most of the shooting is simplistic.. but I think it is done well..

I honestly don't remember PE1 and PE2 since they were so long ago, but I do remember really liking both those games, but I also like The 3rd Birthday

Also, forgot to add in Dissidia Final Fantasy in the suggestions. It's an interesting fighting game hybrid using Final Fantasy characters through the entire series. The sequel is the one to get, from what I hear, as there isn't a huge difference between the two and 012 has all of the tweaks. I have a huge PSP backlog so I won't get to the sequel for a while but the original was pretty cool and unique...

Corpse Party and Jeanne D'Arc are worth looking into as well.

I always wondered about Jeanne D'Arc. It LOOKS like a game i'd be into, but I never bite- care to give a mini review?

I'm not very far into it, but:

Positive:

- Story mixes historic record with anime fantasy really well
- Character models and anime cutscenes are really nicely done, graphics in general are bright and colorful
- Battles move faster than in FFT, and turn limits on battles force you to be a bit more aggressive
- Localization is well-written.
- Characters you don't bring into combat still gain experience.

Negative:
- There don't appear to be many opportunities for character customization
- It hasn't been particularly challenging so far.
