It'd be cool to see Dark Reign-era Normal Osbourne in a movie, but I don't think I want to see the Iron Patriot armor done this way. Iron Man 2 had a stupid villain choice too. Wish we could just get the Mandarin and maybe a version of Fin Fang Foom that isn't too ridiculous.

The Chinese are funding Iron Man 3 and part of it is filmed in China. Do not hold your breath for the Mandarin.
It's just going to be Iron Msn vs Other Suit until one of the movies tanks, or they do a Marvel Team Up movie. Iron Man and Hulk VS. The Leader anyone?
Ben Kingsly is rumored to Mandarin and looks the part. I am not sure how we get Mandarin with a bunch of guys in Iron Suits. I got a Spidey 3 vibe about this, but I actually thought Iron Man 2 was pretty good.
The Wee Baby Sheamus.Twitter: @realjoecarfley its a bit more toned down there. A bit.
I kept hearing we'd get an adaptation of the Extremis storyline, so the Iron Patriot is a nice surprise! Since Norman Osborn's rights are probably still with Sony, I can't imagine who they'd get for the suit.
But the problem, as dwaters pointed out, is that the Iron Man vs. Another Guy in an Iron Man Suit idea has been done quite a bit already.

Well, it's also quite possibly that they use the Iron Patriot look but he's actually more like Detroit Steel, one of the guys made by Hammer who are after Stark right now. Oh, and in the last Iron Man books, Hammer, Zeke Stane and a whole bunch of villains are all working for the Mandarin, willingly or not.
So yeah, that could be your connection. It would expand Tony's universe (even) more and allow more new villains and heroes.
Hell, 2-3 books ago they even set a trap for Iron Man in China, where he worked together with a Chinese group of heroes. What better way to promote China then having them be part of the good-guy's team.

Ultimate Human was that very story and was pretty good. Fits well since Tony and Banner are buds in the movie universe.

That's all I can think of as well. Not so sure about this.
The first two movies were already Iron Man battling variations of himself.
Practically the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far has had the "evil opposites" theme; you could practically pair all the villains up and call them the Linear Guild.
Not that it makes the films any less awesome in my estimation.
