NOTE: BASELESS SPECULATION FOLLOWS.
Do you suppose that executives might have decided that they had to choose between Chevy Chase and Dan Harmon given their previous difficulties (I noticed his last blog post before the most recent one was about that)? And that NBC or Sony Entertainment or whoever might have thought that Harmon was the bigger asshole (he notes how he says "do it this way or I quit" 8 times a day)? I definitely wouldn't agree with them if that was the decision they made; the show creator is way more important than any actor, but that's the kind of fundamental misunderstanding I could see network TV people making.

It may not be the specific Chase vs Harmon spat that caused them to split, but Harmon's behavior that caused the argument seems like a big factor. But if broadening the show is really behind this, then he could've been a nice guy and he still would've been pitched to the side.

I can't find anyone explicitly saying this, but as much as we'd like to see a fourth season with Harmon, I don't think that was a choice in the last couple months. The way NBC has handled things, the final choice must've been between getting rid of Dan or getting rid of Dan and the show. There's no way they were keeping both.

And I'd rather have even a lesser Community than no Community at all. Harmon's influence on the show has been wonderful, but there are also many other wonderful people on the show and if something can be done to save them for another 13 episodes, then I still will take that.

I think that's what I want. The new crew could decide to do a paintball episode in week 3 and it could quickly prove to not be what I want.

The tags! That's what I actually meant to write about.

We know the Harmon/Chase thing started (or got blown up) because Chase refused to film the tag for the last episode they were producing. I don't know if it was actually said which episode it was, but we know it was the last because the wrap party followed, and the bit involved Abed typing in some code and Chase hitting enter, so it obviously was Digital Estate Planning.

But there still was a tag - I'm not sure if I've got them connected right in my head, but I believe it was Abed & Troy finding the baby. They must've taken the tag from one of the last two episodes, shuffled things around, and then just grafted on an unused extra Leonard from the first time they did that bit on the finale. (Leonard was in Digital Estate Planning otherwise, and they maybe couldn't have used that tag their without paying him for that.)

I liked Digital Estate Planning, but I can also see why a man of Chevy's life and experiences would not find it particularly so amusing.

This would all make sense. Then they added a "coolcoolcool" voiceover to the baby to tie it into Digital Estate Planning.

That's the funny thing about the whole Chevy deal. I totally understand why he would be completely baffled by what he was doing at this job. He thought he was on a show about people in community college.

Actually, Sony and NBC probably feel similarly and wonder why their photogenic, likeable, funny cast and simple premise aren't a moderate hit having weekly adventures taking classes and learning lessons about life? I wonder what the Happy Endings guys have in mind. A full circle, most-of-season-1-type hangout show? Or are the experimental episodes seen as part of the Community brand now?

All this sadness is too much. For me, the gaming episode was one of their very best, although I am biased from years of video game playing. Its real influence for me was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, followed by Mega Man and even long forgotten Faxanadu. The paintball eps were more ambitious and grander, but the gaming one might top the list. The first segment especially hit every right note. And the ep had Giancarlo Esposito, so what's not to love?

The two part finale was great fun as well, but it couldn't match Digital Estate Planning.

Harmon being fired is the worst thing that could have happened. The show is brilliant, and perhaps one day people will see what a great show its been. Moving it to Fridays is about as bug of a F-You as the could have given the show without actually cancelling it. But perhaps if they get the idea that NBC isn't even caring, they can go all in on the wackiness.

I'm actually more concerned with Happy Endings suffering because of this. It's a great show as well that's staring to hit its stride. id hate to see two great shows go downhill because NBC doesn't understand its shows.

Terrible news. I've been a Harmon fan since the early Channel 101 days and even made it a point to catch every episode of Acceptable.TV back in 2007, even though it aired on like 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays on VH1. It was such a thrill to see his sensibilities clearly realized on network TV for three seasons, and to have it end like this is legitimately depressing.

But hey! Three great seasons of one of my favorite things ever. And I'm trying to remain open-minded about the next season because the cast is still amazing, and I'm a fan of some of the new guys' work. But, damn. :(

That really short scene after the show is over, where they roll the credits. The last 3 were Troy & Abed finding a baby at the study room, Dean doing the glow stick dancing, and Leonard reviewing potato chips on youtube.

I would have preferred cancellation, but at least Dan got to do some sort of a finale episode to give closure on his vision of Community.

Harmon's been "future endeavored" by NBC/Sony. Season Four is going to be like when the WWF brought in New Diesel and New Razor Ramon. I think it's going to be a very different show, outside of having the same actors.

I think Dan Harmon will rebound, though. Every time he's been fired or failed, he's moved upwards: Heat Vision & Jack -> Silverman -> Acceptable.TV -> Community. Can't wait to see what's next. He already has an Adult Swim pilot in the works.

I mean, look at where Judd Apatow was 10 years ago.

Rewatched the finale. That part where Jeff points out that his old boss started the firm and you can't be fired from your own firm, pretty spooky.

This is sad news, but even as a huge fan of the show (Harmon, despite all the wackiness, really captured the spirit of those little 2-4 year colleges), I have to admit that the last season of the show was utterly impenetrable to new viewers, which is kind of a terrible way to run a mainstream tv show. I'm happy for the 3 seasons we got, and even if the 4th season isn't as good (it won't be), I do look forward to seeing the cast graduate and getting a full wrap-up on their community college experience. And to be completely honest, as long as the jokes are still funny, I'm okay with less ambitious plots and more focus on in-class and on-campus stories. After all, "I swallow failures and spit out diplomas. That's what a dean does."

So you're saying that a couple of incompetent higher-ups allowed Greendale to be run by an impostor D(e)an?

That metaphor only works if the cast works to get Harmon back in time for season 5.

This news is a bummer. This might be an overreaction, and we'll have to see how this plays out, but I don't have high hopes.

I keep thinking about the old Community vs. Modern Family debates back from when they both debuted. Modern Family has been solid, and I don't mean to disparage it, but I feel like Modern Family is the gold-standard for sitcoms, in so far as it gets ratings and critical acclaim, and doesn't really push the envelope (comedically), whereas Community is artistic genius. I shouldn't be surprised by this outcome, but... its just disappointing.

And what is it with such greatness only getting three seasons? First Arrested Development, and now Harmon-run Community? Should we already start pleading to Netflix to restore Community after season 4 fails?

If you need a more upbeat Community chaser in light of the Harmocaust (tm!), Gillian Jacobs and Alison Brie did back-to-back episodes of the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcasts that are true delights (and were recorded prior to Friday night). Alison cohosts with funny_man Jason Mantzoukas of The League and The Dictator, their guest is attorney Saul Goodman. Gillian's first 15 minute segment is must-hear just to experience the terror of the plight she finds herself in.

Digital Estate Planning is easily my favorite episode of Community ever and I'm going to force my wife to watch it with me tonight. I would watch a whole season of 8 Bit Community.

Just random favorite moments:
-Annie accidentally setting the storekeeper on fire then killing him with an axe followed immediately by Shirley doing the same to the wife and telling Annie that she's just tying up Annie's loose ends.
-Abed's game breaking baby making abilities
-Jeff trying to kill Abed because of his "sit back and observe their tactics" strategy.
-Jeff's rousing speech leading to them immediately dying.
-Troy and Abed shooting lava!!!

They tried that on G4, I think. Everybody watched the first season (The W at Amazon) and then nobody watched the second season.

Programming note: Alison Brie will be on Conan Thursday night. Besides that being reason enough to watch right there, I can't imagine the Dan Harmon situation won't come up...

Well, in my defense, I did say "I'd watch it." Can't speak for anyone else. Was Code Monkey's any good though? Without having seen it, I can't judge its merits, but could it be that because it didn't have the built in camraderi of the community gang, that no one tuned in for the second season?

Season 3 had me concerned but ended strong. Season 4... wow. Fantastic opening episode once again! I finally get to watch the show in HD, and it is really, really nice. Loved that the modified opening sequence tradition continued.
