Awake Bent Are You There Chelsea Best Friends Forever
NBC has canceled "Awake," according to TVLine. The Kyle Killen-created drama got the axe from the Peacock network, as well as "Bent," "Are You There Chelsea?" and "Best Friends Forever." The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the cancellations.
The cancellation news comes hot on the heels of NBC renewing "30 Rock," "Parenthood," "Community," "Parks & Recreation," "Whitney," "Up All Night" and "Fashion Star."
NBC already ordered second seasons of "Smash" and "Grimm" and previously canceled 2011-2012 newbies "The Firm," "Prime Suspect, "Free Agents" and "The Playboy Club."
"Awake" starred Jason Isaacs as a police officer living in two realities, one where his wife is alive and not his son after a deadly accident, and one where it's his son who survived. He used clues from each reality to solve various crimes. The series debuted to about 6 million viewers, but has slipped to just over 2 million in recent airings.
NBC only ordered six episodes each of "Bent" and "Best Friends Forever." The network burned all of "Bent" off within three weeks by showing two episodes a night. "Best Friends Forever" debuted to decent numbers for the network -- about 4 million viewers -- after "Betty White's Off Their Rockers." However, NBC pulled the series after airing four episodes. The last two episodes are set to air on Fri., June 1 at 8 p.m. ET.
"Are You There Chelsea?" was based on Chelsea Handler's book "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" and co-starred the E! host. Laura Prepon played the title role. The series debuted to more than 6 million viewers and ended its run with just over 3 million.

Originally posted by CerebusNBC really fucked themselves with that whole Jay Leno crap. Even before that, actually, they were in the shitter.
This is just me being curious, bu what does Leno have to do with sitcoms and drama/action shows which I assume air a lot earlier than his show?
He's referring to Leno's 10pm show from the brief time he ceded the Tonight Show to Conan. NBC axed a bunch of 10pm dramas to make room. Then, when he changed his mind and took the Tonight Show back, NBC had to scramble to fix the mess they essentially created by giving Leno the 10pm slot to begin with.
This is unfortunate since Awake, Bent and BFF were all pretty decent. (Chelsea was junk.) Harry's Law wasn't very good but it was a CBS-ish kind of show that had an audience, which NBC desperately needs. Very surprised it got the axe.

Yeah, you know what? The 18-49 demos don't mean shit.
I'm in that category, and to be brutally honest, I don't 'watch television'. Shit, I don't pay for cable, I only own a TV to hook up the X-Box and the DVD. I refuse to watch regular television. I will download my shit and watch everything a couple hours later, completely free of advertising. I am positive that the majority of the 18-49 demographic are doing the exact same thing, which is why it only shows an average of 1-4 million people for any given show.
The people that watch normal television are the old people and the younger kids who don't use the internet.
Harry's Law was averaging 8 million viewers this season, however, because it's 18-49 demo rating is a 1, NBC thinks it's a waste of air time? Then you got this crap like Community or 30 Rock that doesn't even get half as many viewers but the demo rating is a 1.5, they reward it with another season? This makes no fucking sense to me.
EDIT: In before "Cerebus, you're an idiot. 30 Rock and Community are the best shows on tv!" because no one cares. No one watches these shows. It doesn't matter if they're good. Fuck... Citizen Kane is considered the greatest movie ever made, but when it first came out, it bombed and no one saw it either.
(edited by Cerebus on 13.5.12 0151) Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.
People sometimes forget that the whole point of ratings is so that advertisers know what shows people are watching so that they can decide which shows to advertise for.
The reason the 18-49 demo matters is that's the demo that advertisers want to advertise to. The belief is that people over 50 are more set in their ways in terms of brand loyalty, so it's not really worthwhile to try to sell them things. If indeed a bunch of 18-49ers are eschewing normal television viewing patterns, that just makes the ones who are still watching more valuable.

The MAJORITY? Really? This is where you lost all credibility on this particular topic, assuming anybody still thought you had any.
So in your mind they're doing what exactly? Firing up BitTorrent clients every single time they want to watch TV? Downloading every single episode of every single show they watch at $1-$2 a pop from iTunes? Have you actually sat down and thought this through?

Community is alive, we're good.
I knew it was getting canceled from the fact that she isn't even playing herself in her own show.

That age range always brothers me. The average 49 and 18 year olds have very different lives, disposable income, debt, goals, likes, dislikes, and free time.

Community deserves a lot better than the Joss Whedon Memorial Friday Night Timeslot of Death. I'm hoping networks are going to start taking DVR numbers into account more, because I can't imagine a lot of people staying in on Friday just to watch a TV show.
On the upside, that means Whitney isn't long for this world, either. I tried giving that show another shot a few weeks ago and it's still...just bad.

As others have stated, it is not the network but the advertisers who don't really count time-shifted viewing because it is too east to FF through the ads.
The advertisers do not care if you watch the shows or not, it's their ads they care about. If there was a way to ban FFing through ads on DVRs, I'm sure they'd lobby for a way to get it done.

I nearly did a spit-take when Richardson gave Farnum the thumbs up. This is thing the about this show that The Sopranos seemed unable to accomplish. This episode was fairly inconsequential in terms of plot development - save for a couple of moments....
