Good for him.

Actually doing something to ensure same-sex marriage equality would be better.

True, but I guess at least this is a step in the right direction. An email he sent out tonight made it clear, at least from my interpretation, that he plans on just playing the "it's a state issue" card, rather than doing anything:

"But I believe that in the eyes of the law, all Americans should be treated equally. And where states enact same-sex marriage, no federal act should invalidate them."

He's already dropped support of DOMA in court. Not sure what else is in his power to do at this point.

I would love to see federal action on this too but, honestly, with the way that the Congress and Supreme Court is made up of reactionaries there's little that he can do.

Honestly, I say on this issue - I could give a flying leap about so-called "states rights". Much like Canada and UK, issue a federal amendment allowing same-sex and opposite-sex marriage and be done with it.

I'm glad that he did come out in favour of it though - hopefully it gets added to the party platform, as well.

The problem for Obama is that he can't legally do anything else to stop this, so its easier politically just to say let the states figure it out. This Congress has been a disaster since the 2010 elections. Losing our AAA credit, keeping tax cuts for the rich and hardly doing anything. Even if he did have the Congress of 2008, I doubt it would get passed since it took a minor miracle to get Health Care through and we see how well that has worked out for him.

Its a good moment for him, but its going to turn an election that really is not as close the polls numbers say into a rather close election. People need to get over the General Election numbers and focus on the states. You would think the media and public would have learned their lesson in 2000, but I guess not. Real Clear politics has him with 253 delegates and that does not include Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Colorado, New Hampshire and Virgania where he is leading and in the latest polls by a lot in Colorado, Iowa and NH. It will make PA tough for him even though he is up by 7 to 8 points. He will lose 5% and still be in decent shape, maybe.

Its an interesting situation for the GOP as well, because this could easily re-enforce, the we hate gays vibe their party has become known for. Yes, it will energize the base too a point. But, the energy coming out of it will not be positive and can be easily turned against them by saying the wrong thing. Which we all know Mitt never says anything wrong or flip flops on issues. And if I were Mitt, going through the marriage tunnel with a grand daddy who jumped ship to Mexico to have multiple wives is not a subject I am sure he wants to get into. At least gay marriage is with one person.

Any amendment does need to be passed by 2/3 of the house and senate and then ratified by 3/4 of the states, so, the states would play a tiny role in the process.

And lest we forget, the Equal Rights Amendment designed to protect women's rights couldn't clear that hurdle. If women couldn't get it done, I can't see any hope in hell of a constitutional amendment protecting gay marriage passing. (Heck, there are people who think they can get one passed banning it.)

I can't tell if that's a fundamental flaw in the political system a problem with humanity that people can't even pass an amendment guaranteeing equal rights for women.

I'm going to go with 'both'.

Well amendments to the Constitution were designed to be difficult. They didn't want the lawmakers to abuse their ability to change the law.

I can't help but cynically see Obama's announcement as a way to try to revive his flagging support amongst his base, especially when you consider (as noted) that he can't actually do anything about it.

Considering North Carolina is in play and they slammed down 60% to get the complete passed as one of those impossible amendments. I am going to say this was one of his ballsiest moves even if Biden let it slip. And this is a guy who killed one of the greatest villains the US has known via GI Joe style. And to Obama's credit he killed Do Not Ask and Don't Tell and the DOMA.

It does amaze me how the GOP slammed this on a War on Marriage even though it just expands it. Yet, to the GOP there is no War on Women even though there is amble evidence like the Equal Protection Clause that says otherwise. As a Christian, I remember a story about a woman named Lilith, who was Adam's first wife. Who got a little bossy and got kicked out to become Queen of the Monsters as well as random RPG villain. So, when everyone goes off about marriage being this giant religious thing just remember Eve was a clone from Adam who still also got their ass banished. So, marriage thing is not as scared as the Church believes it is.

My post was going to be about how the company wants to keep a good image. Like, does Coke want people to gossip: "Hey, I saw that delivery dude drinking PEPSI. He thinks Coke SUCKS!
