I can totally understand why many people do not come to appreciate this show - you need to be all in on each episode or not all. It's can only be tough to only partially into show that's so intensely dedicated to being it's weird self. But if you're in to it, there's nothing better than it.
That horrible grammatical mess another way of saying this episode was awesome in both the first and second definitions of the word. I did not think they would able to keep the joke going for all three acts. They did it and more, it was incredible. A note perfect parody that still remembered to be funny. This might not have reached the incredible heights of the very best episodes but this was as artistically great as any of them.
This episode really made me miss watching Law and Order SVU, when I was still into it years ago.
I was kinda surprised that Annie acted as the prosecutor in the courtroom scene, but if someone is gonna be as cutthroat about a passing grade who would you pick? Yet Jeff had the trained eye to see the real truth, which I thought was brilliant.
Why do I get the feeling that this episode was mainly constructed around the fate of Starburns?
As someone who's watched way too much Law & Order, I thought that this episode was fantastic. They hit every beat perfectly, from the opening discovery of the body, to the sting, to the last-second reveal in the courtroom (I remind you both that this is not a courtroom), to the final unexpected off-screen death. I especially loved the fact that they got the actual actress who played the coroner on Law & Order to do the bit in the lab.

Any time they do, or, I'm sorry, "break," a special episode, the question they always ask is "what's our Jeff & Britta fucking [in Modern Warfare]?" The big stakes thing with lasting story implications that made this more than just an exercise is being awesome. Tonight, their Jeff & Britta fucking was ... the tragic death of Star Burns. :(

I fucken knew this before I read the HIV Club review, goddamn them I was gonna look smart.
The last (pre-credit) line...I have seriously not laughed as long at something on TV in almost 20 years (previous champion: the final exchange at the end of "Brother From the Same Planet" on The Simpsons). Everything about that - the way it was played completely straight, followed by a "tasteful" fade-out, delivered by Michael K. Williams, and set up to nail the L&O fatal car crash/"Was it because I was a lesbian?" style ending - was amazing.

You nailed it. You took the words right out of my mouth.
When you're into the show, it's extremely rewarding. I can't believe it took me so long to give it a try.
If you've listened to Dino Stamamamapoaldlss on the DVD commentary, he's been lobbying for his character to be killed since the summer after the first season. But Dan Harmon's regret was the same as mine: now Star Burns can't accumulate any more affectations. Tragic.
To some degree his was a noble sacrifice, taking the bullet for Leonard, who is old, or Garrett, who they saved (did they?).
The last two episodes have been fantastic. I think they are at the point where they don't care about being cancelled anymore so they aren't playing up to any suits. Reminds me of the 2nd season of Get a Life where they just went insane with it because it was at the bottom of the ratings anyway.
This episode blew me away. I'm also kinda mad at myself for just getting the Dick Wolf reference now. Probably one of my favorites of the series, because it was so faithful and perfectly on-tone with what it was referencing.
Dan Harmon did his own little Law and Order parody for Channel 101 a couple of years back and it's pretty brilliant in its own right: http://www.channel101.com/show/295
Troy and Abed being the "not detectives" is what sealed the deal for how awesome this episode was. "He's a bad cop, I'm a good cop. You can trust me!" as well as each of them telling the other to walk it off when they got angry was just great. Plus, when we get Dani Pudi able to act without the Aspbergers (spelling) its always refreshing.
There was just so much that was so spot on, it was incredible. I used to watch law and order religiously and every single moment of this show was just incredibly written.
