ESPN is reporting that the VIkings Stadium deal is just about DOA. Goodell and the NFL boys are going up to talk to the politicians, and try to convince them to build a new venue.
I think the big question is, what will the Vikings be called when they are playing in LA?

They'll be the Vikings. If Minnesota is unwilling or unable to help finance a new stadium, there will be no remnants left behind, as there would be no chance of a team ever returning (i.e., if you aren't going to build a stadium now, why would you build one later). This isn't a case of future expansion offering up a chance at a new team down the road -- this is it.

and it would be sad to lose them. the problem is that these things are sold to the public that they will get their money back and more. But you don't. At the best, they won't lose jobs and money. If you are the average Joe/Jane you can't even afford to go to the games.
I agree with you, Doc, but they would appear to really lose in this case, in that there is money currently being spent in Minnesota that won't be spent there in the near future.
ProFootballTalk hints at an interesting dynamic in that the lease at the Metrodome may currently be expired. If that is the case, and Minnesota (not the Vikings) plays hardball, the team could be homeless this year.
I think its the reality of the times. Cities like Minneapolis are so far in debt due to the economy and other factors, they can't ask the tax payers to fork over the money. Especially in an election year where every ad has something to do with taxes. It would be a huge loss for Minnesota as far as tourism goes, but if its not bringing in money than its a waste of time. I think we will see more of this as time goes on.
Sure, they can go to LA a market where NFL has constantly failed and will do so again, but after that then what? There are not a lot of major cities left who can afford an NFL stadium to build. And the tax payers are not going to stand for it anymore if a chunk of them have shit jobs or no jobs. The NFL has to be real careful with this, if they try to grease palms, it could come back and bite them. If they try to move the team to a city where it fails then they lose twice. They get two teams no one goes too as opposed to one team that a good chunk of people go too. What the NFL should do and should have done all along is pay for half of a new stadium while the owner pays the other half. If the owner can't then out he or she goes. Don't burden the people when a large group is probably never going to go to the games let alone care.

The reality is, having an NFL team is marquee-level prestige for cities and is well worth the investment. Even at $975 million. There's far more benefits to communities than just selling football tickets.
If the taxpayers want something to whine about, point out that the new stadium debate has been going on for a couple of decades now. Had they done this ten years ago, it likely would have only cost half to do than it would now.
The people and politicians of Minnesota need to get their heads out of their asses and get this done. It's a proven market that sells tickets.
I think they can (and will) wait until after the new year so the politicians can get re-elected (which seems to be the REAL problem here), but not much beyond that.
Most studies have shown that publicly funded stadiums are not worthwhile economically, which frankly is the only thing that the local government should care about. They should not be in the business of subsidizing billionaires. If they can get referendum support for building a new facility via increases in taxes, then so be it, but I'm pretty sure they won't (even Green Bay, with a relationship unequaled in American professional sports, only saw its resolution to renovate Lambeau Field pass with 53% of the vote).
Since I can't see L.A. ever getting a stadium approved and the NFL not going there unless they get everything signed in advance, I'll go with the wild card pick: Oklahoma City. Has shown they can support a pro team in basketball, and the state of Oklahoma has always shown the ability to draw in college football. Or, they can always tease San Antonio yet again.

I think what happened 50 years ago is not nearly as relevant as what happened five years ago. (Although I failed to do the "Lakers to LA"-math...which if the Vikings followed that would be pretty harsh indeed.)
