It's been almost a year since I read A Clash of Kings. Of the five A Song of Ice and Fire books, it's the one I read the fastest and for some reason, the one with the details I remember the least (until the events that conclude the book, which I remember very well). So season 2 of Game of Thrones feels kind of new to me, like I'm constantly rediscovering things I'd learned and then forgotten. But as such, I'm less capable of pointing out the details of what is new/different on the show from what was in the books.

One thing I was aware of from the outset was the show changing the name of Theon Greyjoy's sister from Asha to Yara Greyjoy. Theon is in full horny swagger mode, but he seems to me now like a full-sized Warwick Davis from Life's Too Short - a self-deluded asshole who's more convinced of his own importance than anyone he meets ever is. Plus his groping and molesting his sister, though he was unaware at the time that was his sister, takes that kiss Luke and Leia shared on Hoth to a far, far more disgusting level. But then, incest is old hat in Westeros.

And how about that Balon Greyjoy, huh? What an a-hole. Not quite a Walder Frey-level a-hole, but he's right up there. I've never cared much for the Ironborn in the books. You can already see the wheels turning for how he's going to screw Robb Stark over. I do like the implications that the Northmen are "dressed like whores", that they wear "skirts" since the Northmen are kind of analogues for the Scottish.

I loved the scene with Davos Seaworth (has he been referred to as The Onion Knight yet? I don't recall from last week) and Sallador Slan the pirate. "You Westerosi are strange. A man cuts off your finger and you fall in love with him!"

No Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Sansa Stark, or Bran Stark this week. Very, very light on Starks, but a lot of mention of the dearly departed and sorely missed Ned Stark.

Speaking of Starks, the interplay between Gendry and Arya/Arry is spot on, especially his teasing her about being a lady. Considering the lifelong friendship between Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark, I really dig a similar friendship being forged between Ned's daughter and Robert's bastard. Plus the formal introduction of Jaqen H'ghar. Just so.

Tyrion is fantastic feeling out his power as (acting) Hand of the King, banishing Janos Slynt to the Wall and installing Bron as lord of the City Watch. Best line in the episode for me: "I'm not questioning your honor. I'm denying its existence." Tyrion's scenes with Cercei are also great. "You've perfected the art of tearing up papers." Tyrion is so very smart and Cercei is so very not smart. The Tyrion/Varys/Shae stuff was also very good.

Not much for poor Daenerys this week, or last. The Blood of her Blood she sent off to scout come back with his head in his horse's sack. No sign of the dragons this week, either.

But my, Ghost has grown. Grey Wind was huge last week when he stared down Jamie in Robb's camp, but Ghost might even be a bit bigger. There weren't enough of the dire wolves last season, so it's great the show has worked them in these first two episodes.

The episode also made time to show us the trials and tribulations of Littlefinger trying to run his brothel. And Stannis banging Melissandre on his Map of Westeros table, with action figures dropping all over the floor.

Finally, above the wall, Sam and Jon Snow met Gilly, whom I seem to recall is kind of important. I wasn't clear if that was her baby that was left out as a sacrifice to the White Walkers at the end. I don't think it was; but again, I'm really soft on the details of the third and fourth tier ancillary characters in this saga.

Gilly and the baby are sorta kinda important in book four and a bit in book five. Not a fan of changing character names, Sasha is a pretty standard name not sure the reasoning to change it to Yara expect to make it sound more exotic. Yeah, if there is a group of people I wouldn't mind seeing eliminated from the series it was the Ironborn. They are very important to the series, but at the same time, you can tell Martin is using them for padding at times or trying to make them a connection to other characters that doesn't work. People online were saying Tryion was a bad ass in this episode, man, they have no idea.

I expected Asha/Yara to be a bit more....I don't know. I was expecting her to be clever, quick, and beautiful. I didn't get that. Maybe that will come in time though.

Balon Greyjoy will be fun to watch. That actor knows how to coat every word perfectly in venom.

Not to belabor this point, but Theon went to second and third base with his sister while they were riding that horse. Now, Theon didn't know who she was. But Yara DID know who Theon was, and she let him finger mow her lawn and reacted with pleasure to it. Even on this show, with Jaime and Cercei and the Targaryens, I find that messed up.

Mind you, I was at a party Saturday night trying to convince some ladies who were on the fence to watch Game of Thrones by extolling its virtues, but the main stickler besides the violence was the incest. There was no way to get around or sugar coat the incest, except to tell incest jokes (which I don't think helped my cause).

Littlefinger was shockingly evil this week. I know he's no saint, but damn that was cold.

And damn do I wish I was Stannis this week...

Tyrion is mos def awesome, and Cersei is mos def "very not smart", but Cersei did totally destroy him with the "at least I didn't kill our mother in childbirth with my dwarf body, funny half-man" burn. Point to Cersei in that match-up.

How can you complain about them changing a name if you can't even get it right yourself? It's Asha in the books. The reason they changed her name is that they wanted to avoid confusion with her and the wildling Osha for viewers who haven't read the books.

Glad to see that Arya was back for this episode, her interactions with Gendry were perfect. And Yoren is a badass.

And yet Benioff and Weiss decided to change Asha's name to Yara, an anagram of Arya. Not that anyone would be confused by this, but still a little strange.

When we meet Arys Oakheart, will anyone be confusing him with the late Mad King Aerys Targaryen?

Then there's Robb Stark and Robert Baratheon.

Isn't that why they changed Steven Regal's name to William Regal? Cuz it's too similar to Stevie Richards?

Heh, I hadn't noticed that at all. Who knows if they'll even have Ser Arys, they've already renamed one of Dany's bloodriders Kovarro. I think the only members of the Kingsguard referred to by name in the show at this point are Jamie of course, and Meryn Trant.

Robb, Ned's first born son, was named for his best friend Robert.

Hey, it's lucky Robert Baratheon never had a son named Theon. Theon Baratheon.

I don't know about Cersei being "not smart" seeing as she put Little Finger and Tyrion in check psychologically. In fact her throwing her son on the throne and keeping Robert's true lineage on the DL was very opportunistic, unfortunately putting Joffrey on the throne was like Dr. Frankenstein awakening his monster which no one saw coming.

Jizz dribble jokes?! Little Finger sure knows how to take care of his girls.

TYRION: If I asked you to kill an infant girl still at her mother's breast without question, would you do it?
BRONN: Without question no. I'd ask "how much?".

Bronn you stole my damn heart in a hetero way of course.

Never thought I'd see cunnilingus on a horse with a twist of incest. She didn't cut him off from doing that at all, and knowingly flirted with him the whole time. Seriously what the shit?

I like the pirate guy. He can be very persuasive. He makes me feel like playing Neverwinter Nights 2.

Missed you Arya.

I'm going to throw this out there, hopefully as a weekly thing for these threads:

Apparently, Game of Thrones will kill a character on the show who does not die in the books, presumably this season. Those are all the details that were leaked months ago about this.

So I propose a Game of Thrones Dead On The Show Death Watch.

It's entirely possible we have yet to meet said doomed character, but I'm going to start this Dead On The Show Death Watch this week based on whom we've already met. My choice will potentially change from week to week until said character croaks.

I realize these could result in spoilers for those who have not read the books, so I will use spoilers tags and I suggest you do the same. I learned how to here (The W)

My Dead On The Show Death Watch guess this week:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Bronn, newly appointed Lord Commander of the City Watch and hetero male crush of many.

Mind you, this is a guess based on absolutely no info whatsoever.

Game of Thrones renewed for season 3! (insidetv.ew.com)

Thus, we are guaranteed at least the first half of A Storm of Swords adapted.

And here's an interview (insidetv.ew.com) with showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss dated March 30th which discusses season 2 and more.

I don't recall reading about Stannis and Melisandre doing it.
Did this happen in the book?
I was just telling a friend who hasn't read the books that Stannis was such a sourpuss, who would never do anything unethical (well..in his own sense) and the next moment he's committing adultry.

Though I can imagine where this leads and what kind of child she gives him...

So far everything is progressing nicely in the first two episodes. Characters are stealing scenes left and right.
Great acting all around imo.
And Joffrey is the king I love to hate.

Qotho last season? And if it wasn't, Rakharo (the rider whose head was just sent back to Daenyrs) isn't dead in the books either- he was written out because the actor is in World War Z.

Much like Renly being gay, it was never explicitly shown or spelled out for the reader, but it was strongly hinted at.
