I predict my Chiefs will be "in the running" for big name free agents and miss out on all of them and sign a bunch of cheap castoffs and retreads. And Pioli and Hunt will talk alot about how hard they tried.

The Colts lost Pierre Garcon, too?

Oh, boy. This is gonna be a long next few years. But then again I suppose we were due, considering our unusually consistent level of excellence over the last decade.

Except they are so far under the cap and I believe they are required to spend more or be penalized so maybe they will nab at least one or two. However, I fear you may be correct.

Salary cap floor requirements don't go into effect until 2013 season.

But kept Reggie Wayne. Who is demonstrably awesome, so at least there's that. I think the Redskins overpaid Garcon a bit so the Colts were probably better off staying out of that one.

Bucs also signed CB Eric Wright to a 5 year deal. I'm loving the fact that the Glazers are finally spending money.

Also just learned they signed G Carl Nicks from the Saints

Eric Wright is serviceable, but not a top player. I did enjoy how (before last year of course) his dad would be on the Browns board I frequent.

Rumor here is that Peyton Hillis is talking to the Chiefs and the Browns are making an offer to not at all interested in Flynn.

Free Agency for Steeler fans is like the last day of school as you say good bye to good friends as they walk out the door to take better jobs and become irrelevant. Expect Rod Woodson, man, that was a tough day and a tough Super Bowl to watch.

Calvin Johnson signs a seven-year, $132 million extension with the Lions.

Mario meeting with the Bills as we speak at One Bills Drive. Reports earlier spoke of him leaving a doctor's office (possible team physical?). Now John Clayton from ESPN is saying that he told the Bills last night he intends to visit other teams.

#BillsMafia is on the edge right now. If Mario signs we're going to explode, if he doesn't.....just another day is despairland aka Bills.

The Buccaneers basically had no choice but to start spending money this year, as they're WAY under the cap as usual (I think by $40-$45 million) and had to spend to avoid getting really dinged by the salary floor next year. So, hey, go big or go home with Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks, Eric Wright and who knows else.

Rams have an agreement worked out with Cortland Finnegan, who's reuniting with Jeff Fisher.

Bears signed Jason Campbell as the backup QB, so if Cutler goes down again, now the team won't completely fall apart

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball

Well, this would be Campbell's what, fifth or sixth coach/coordinator in his career? I wouldn't hold up hope that he'd be a serviceable backup.

This doesn't make any sense to me. Campbell has proven that he can pick up new offenses (again and again) and if he hadn't gotten hurt he would've been Oakland's starter going into 2012 (probably). Why *wouldn't* you want him as your back-up, especially if you are a good team that fell off the map last year when your starter got hurt?

Well, compared to who the Bears had as backup, he's surely a move up, but he's never really mastered any offense, and looking at his stats, he's middling at best.

If he weren't middling at best, then he wouldn't be signing on as a backup. That or he just needs to have someone get hurt in front of him so he gets his chance.

Yeah, but you could make a reasonable case for him being better than a bunch of guys with starting gigs in the NFL. If you get a backup who's better than many teams' starter then life don't suck.

For funsies, make a list of the 32 backup QBs in the league and ask yourself where you'd rank Campbell. If he isn't in the top handful, I'd be mighty surprised.

Good gravy.

I said make yourself a list of the backup QBs. He's a BACKUP! Even then you still only got to about 20 better than him, meaning by your own reckoning the Bears now have a second string QB who is better than or equal to a third of teams' starter.

Put another way, who of the people you listed as better than Campbell do you think they should've signed to warm the bench for Jay Cutler? Outside of Orton, I'm not sure (m)any of them would've taken the job.

Edit - Much more importantly, yay! Desean! Love the fact the Eagles have got him to sign long term, even more love the fact they can get out of the contract in a couple years if it all goes wrong. Now they just need to lock up McCoy (for being good at football) and Mathis (for being good at football AND having one of the best Twitter accounts in sports).

I was surprised to hear the news. Are they still going with Henne throwing the ball in the normal sets? It seems like an odd move to me and a lot to give up for a guy with a loty of talent, but one who can really be an ass.
