As interesting as Raylan Givens is, and Timothy Olyphant is at being him, the magic ingredient in this show has been the outright villains. Boyd in season 1, Mags in season 2. Quarles is an interesting puzzle, but the standout villain this year is Wynn Duffy. Wynn had a successful criminal enterprise, always just out of the reach of the law. If it ever got too hot, he'd pull up the parking brake and drive his RV far away from there. Ever since Quarles showed up, he's finding himself seconds away from being discovered, rushing around being someone else's clean up man, and fully realizing the man he's stuck working for is completely bonkers. Wynn knows all of this, knows this going to end with Quarles pointing a gun at him or someone like Raylan pointing one at both of them, and there's nothing he can do to stop it.

You'd blame him for betting on the wrong horse if he ever really had a choice in the manner. I don't know that it could've happened in the last episode, but in a show with ever shifting alliances and relationships, maybe Raylan taking a different approach might net some useful results. Maybe it'd have to be someone else, but there's going to be a point soon where all Wynn is looking for a life preserver to get off this boat, and maybe someone on the side of the law will be quick enough to throw him one ahead of time.

It's also such a great twist on the character Jere Burns plays all over the place - instead of the supreme evil, he's somehow sympathetic! - that's really good casting.

This is more of a point about last week, but the revelations of how Quarles came to be exiled to Kentucky give a whole new reading to end of the first episode. "You had a good thing going, and you messed it up" and the murder of the betraying sexual partner are as much Quarles fighting some of his own personal demons as cleaning house here.

The HitFX recap of the show mentioned something I picked up too - this was the second time someone's mentioned Quarles gun jamming (first was when he explained it to Wynn the night of 'the next one will be coming faster') - but I'm not sure they're actually still takling about the weapon. The gun is almost a part of Quarles, Quarles is the gun, and he's about close to being jammed now. This season does not seem like it'll end with a well executed plan coming to fruition, but an explosion and someone deciding to take everyone they can with him.

I'm not 100% sure with that woman, but my assumption is Winona figured out that while she may not have wanted Gary alive, it's pretty much Raylan's fault he ended up dead on her lawn. Which would seem to re-enforce the reasons she didn't want to be around him any more. They are so done.

This post wasn't supposed to be long! I'm going to stop before I start to write a 1000 words about why I don't believe Boyd is making it to season 4.

Wynn Duffy's been a great supporting player for the last two seasons, and it is good to see him get a bigger role. I think my favorite part of this episode was the detective who was so impressed with Raylan's one-liners. "Now that's just about the coolest thing I've ever heard! Did you come up with that yourself?" I'll be super super disappointed if the season doesn't end with Quarles trying to draw down on Raylan and having his mechanism jam up. I'm also not too worried about Boyd, because he is way too good of a character and way too good of a foil/compliment for Raylan to get killed off.

Absolutely terrific episode again. I was shocked when Gary got shot, but it makes sense to kill him off, giving Winona a real reason to split town. I wouldn't think they are totally done though, she did just commit a felony for him(and did it with no prompting) so she's got to care about him a little bit.

I like how they are using Limehouse to explain or bridge the stories, while keeping him out of being directly being the bad guy.

Ok, so did I miss something? What the hell was in that room that Duffy was having to clean up?

That was a room where Quarles had a young man tied up earlier in the season. Wynn heard screaming from it in a later episode. Last episode, Quarles told him to paint over it, and Wynn told him "You can't paint over blood." They've never made it clear what Quarles is exactly doing, but have implied being caught doing something similar got him kicked out of Detroit.

Ok, so we still don't fully know. By the reveal at the end of this ep, I'm guessing it was cuh-ray-zee.
