One of my favorite shows on the UHF channel when I was a kid was The Monkees. Such a shame that they were so pigeon holed and not allowed to do their own thing after the show started going south. Davy gave us some fun music, and he had a dance so awesome, Axl Rose stole it.
Very sad to see this. Big fan of the Monkees. I saw them live a couple of times in the 80s, and even once got to see Davy (playing himself playing himself) in "The Real Live Brady Bunch", which was a lot of fun. Jones always seemed like someone who really enjoyed performing.
I'm not a Monkees fan myself, but one of my best friends is a huge Monkees fan, and has met (and had her picture taken with) Davy Jones; she was devastated.

One weird fact to come of this...I didn't realize David Bowie's real name is 'David Jones.' He adopted his stage name to avoid being confused with the Monkee.
Other weird tie-in....Modern Family picked the worst possible day to have a Monkees joke on their show. The scenario is that two guys dressed as flying monkeys have arrived at the front door for a Wizard of Oz-themed party.
Guy #1: Hey. Guy #2: Hey. Guy #1: We're the Monkees.
Given that they delivered these lines in the driest voices possible, it was quite funny.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball
For anyone interested, Antenna TV (if you have an affilliate in your neck of the woods) is going to be doing a Monkees marathon starting at 5pm Eastern on Saturday 3/3/2012. They're also going to play their movie, Head.
I'm gonna miss Penny and 'dem thangs. I had a feeling this show wouldn't last too long. The humor can get quite abstract with it's obscure late 80's and 90's references and callbacks to previous episodes. HE is kind of like Venture Bros.
