(From 411mania)

Many wrestlers backstage at RAW were happy to hear John Cena's comments about The Rock on RAW last night. The feeling among many was that the comments were a shoot on how many backstage feel about Rock.

One of the wrestlers backstage told PWInsider the following about the Rock under the condition of anonymity:

"[Johnson] comes in to use WWE to get back the audience he lost doing Disney movies, which is fine but he's been back over a year and name one person he helped make a bigger star since then? No one. He's here for himself, he keeps to himself, and he keeps someone who's actually touring here all year from making a bigger payday at the bigger shows. It's all about making this the "biggest" Mania of all time. OK, then what do we do the rest of the year? Who's been made? You think he took ANY blame for Survivor [Series] not drawing? Of course not, but how do you feud with a guy on the Titantron? Cena nailed the guy dead on tonight. Say anything about HHH, Taker, etc. still being in the top spot but if they were needed to work the road, they would and they would still work their asses off as much as they needed to. Rock is out for Rock and the idea he's here to better anything but his own wallet is the biggest work of 2012."

For what it's worth, Rock has been staying at the same hotel as the rest of the WWE crew every time he has been booked for TV.

_____

I really hope this was just put out there to "work the smarts" (do the kids still say that?) cause if this is true what people think, then these wrestlers are more delusional than even I thought. Wow.

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

Yes, of course The Rock is only back for the money. Because he doesn't make more money doing three movies a year than he would working WrestleMania and risking injury.

Wait. Some pro wrestlers aren't smart (i.e. intelligent)? What?

What do they want the guy to do? HHH and Undertaker are wrestlers, Rock is a celebrity that cameos as a wrestler. He doesn't have to do it, neither does Shaq. If this is how everyone is going to act than I wouldn't blame the guy if he cut ties with wrestling and said screw it.

Of course there is something in it for him, but I think The WWE gets more out of it in the long run.

This feud should be about a great from the past against a great from the present, not who loves the WWE and The WWE Universe more.

If he keeps coming back, then he hasn't really left, right?

The funny thing about the whole "rock left wrestling behind" is that he's a third-generation worker who probably loves the business but not the industry.

And I doubt Vince would take him back and pay him handsomely if he had the kind of hatred for Rock leaving than some of the other people that have left the company. Vince generally it seems will put aside grudges to make money (except notably for Savage).

If some of these guys bitching about The Rock were offered twenty million dollar to do movies instead of beat up their bodies two hundred days a year most of them would have made the same decision that Rock made. Hell HHH desperately wanted to be an actor too and went for auditions and never got a job because well watch the chaperon to see why he never made it there. The Rock is doing these Wrestlers a favor as his presence for wrestlemania puts more money in their pockets. They should be grateful.

We don't need an angle for a match like Rock versus Cena. It's ROCK VERSUS CENA.

The Taker/Hunter angle is complicated only by the streak.
Taker: "Challenge"
Hunter: "Dismissal"
Taker: "Insult"
Hunter: "All in"
And we're off.

Cena/Rock needs neither a championship nor a spark. The WWE's biggest crossover stars from the last ten years are gonna go at it. Place bets now.

Devil's Advocate: Hogan put money in people's pockets for a long time, but he was still a shit who took more than he put in work-wise. Rock provides the biggest night of the year - that's great, he didn't have to come back at all. But it's a valid concern that putting all their eggs into the Rock basket for this year and not getting anything out of it in terms of building for the future is awfully shortsighted.

That a very fair point. The Rock's return should not only be about making a shit ton of money, but also giving wrestlers rub. That is why imo the booking of The Miz and Truth going into the Survivor Series was so destructive. The Miz and Truth were book to look like bumbling idiots going in, and poor Miz according to reports took the blame for Survivor Series drawing a disappointing buyratte. They could have enchanced Miz and Truth's act instead of dragging them down. The writers really screwed the pooch there.

But that's not The Rock's fault. It seems like Cena (and if this article is correct, other wrestlers) are kinda blaming him for this and being a 'sellout' and not being true to the WWE, but it's on the writers to make sure the that the time that he isn't there, something productive happens and new stars are built. I'm sure it wasn't The Rock's idea to totally squash Miz/R Truth during Survivor Series. It's not The Rock's responsibility to give wrestlers the rub.

How could Rock squash Miz/R-Truth when Cena did before him? The buyrate for Survivor Series had more to do with WWE throwing a poster with Cena and Rock saying they were going to tag up unfortunately they had no good story to do it. Instead they let Cena be Cena and squash Miz/R-Truth via promos and matches. Its no wonder no one bought it. Its a shame, because it was one of their better PPVS of the year.

They have had more than enough time to build new stars and they have failed miserably. Punk, Ryder and most of the new guys had to do web shows and bunk the writers and Vince to get over. They had to do things themselves while creative has wasted years, years with Cena beating the odds without any repercussions, Orton banging the mat to the point of injuring himself and making the streak more important than titles at Mania. None of which is Rock's fault. If anything Vince and the others should be happy that Rock is willing to go in the ring when its more profitable and sane for him not to get in the ring at all.

Cena should be happy that Rock is willing to work with him, because to me Orton/Rock is better match idea. 3rd Generation vs. 3rd Generation is just as interesting as Cena/Rock or Rock coming back to end the streak is not a bad storyline considering we are now in year 5 of DX vs. Taker. Hell, Punk vs. Rock would be good to and Punk's Cobra tattoo is a nice tie in for GI Joe 2. Cena/Rock is a dream match, but then again Rock vs. a number of other guys on the roster is a dream match too. Also, when Cena does leave like Edge is, does it make him a better WWE guy or stupid for not getting out when he could still play around with his future kids.

Translation: I'll never get half the pop the Rock does.

The man is an ICON. Not a star, not a superstar, but a M F'n ICON. He shows up and the crowd shits their pants. Who on the roster now gets such universal love? Jealousy sucks, but whoever this "source" is, probably wouldn't be in one of the top three matches at WM if the Rock wasn't involved, so it's a moot point for them to complain about him.

I thought it was a great promo. Not sure if it was just playing up some of Cena's feelings or closer to a full shoot, but it seemed real, which is good.

I get both sides of the arguement. Rock DID say he was back for good, and has been on less than five shows all year. However, anyone who expects Rock to abandon movies and go back to a full WWE schedule is a fool.

Pro wrestling locker room in "being petty & insular" shocker. That said, wrestlers being bitchy and in denial about how Rock is helping doesn't mean Rock hasn't rubbed anyone the wrong way with how he carries himself when he's around. Unless you think their only reasonable behavior is to kiss his feet regardless of how (they perceive) he acts. Which for all we know is only because his schedule is really tight ("limo to gorilla to ring to limo"), but again, it's pro wrestling, it's super-provincial.

Rock didn't help. He did an interview about how he didn't want to team up with Cena but he changed his mind because of his Twitter feed. Then he did a live promo that ignored Miz and Truth while they were standing right in front of him to talk about Twitter some more. Then he laid them out.

Winning the Twitter world is the company's stance. I'm sure they were thrilled with how that played out since they weren't building Miz and Truth up much themselves.

I love that this 'backstage gossip' takes the perspective that WWE is doing ROCK a favour by 'letting him win his old audience back.' That's some inspired naval-gazing logic right there.

Rock is, by all accounts, doing Wrestlemania 28 because his brief return last year gave him the bug again. This is all just gravy for WWE, giving everyone two big PPV paydays (plus Survivor Series) for the price of one.

The upper-tier of all-time WWE stars is Hogan/Austin/Sammartino, with Rock and Andre close behind as pop culture icons. (Sammartino obviously doesn't have the mainstream cred as the others but c'mon, the guy carried the company for 15 years.) Savage is probably sixth. You can make a case for Cena as seventh, all things considered, since he's been "the guy" for longer and in a much more direct way than Michaels, Undertaker, HHH and Bret Hart.

Cena's promo, as well as "Mystery Superstar" come off as jealous of Rocky's success.

Is Cena and "Mystery Superstar" saying that if Hollywood came along with multi-film & multi-million dollar contracts anthat they would just say "No, I like being just a wrestler".

I call BS on that.

Cena wants what Rock has, and he know he will never have it. So he trashes Rock in a promo to try to win Rocky's fans over to him, and it's not going to work. All Cena's said over the last year is "I've been here when Rock left for Hollywood, and I'll be here when he goes back to Hollywood." It hasn't worked in the last year, it won't work now.

I enjoyed Cena's promo. There's been concern about getting enough build on the match, but that was a nice kick-off. I'm interested to see how this plays out with Cena's "love him, hate him" crowd response. I could kinda see the Cena-haters flipping to pro-Cena, at least for the duration. Meanwhile, I suspect a lot of the pro-Cena fans walk in the door as also pro-Rocky. It'll be snarkily entertaining if the "Cena sucks" chants suddenly shift to markedly soprano.

I was envisioning Vince backstage, shaking his head about "pro wrestling" rather than "sports entertainment", & muttering about damn CM Punk. :-)

We don't know how Dwayne behaves backstage when he does deign to show up. (Snark. We know: he, i.e. one of his people, sorts out with Vince when he's needed. And how much he'll get paid for it. I'm quite sure that he wouldn't just be dropping by for the good will.) If he is doing the "limo to gorilla to ring to limo" (as Shapiro said above), that's not really the way things are done.

I honestly cannot tell if people here who are ripping Cena and WWE (and Mystery Wrestler) for deigning to suggest that the Rock abandoned the company and is now looking to score a payday and adulation are SERIOUS or just judging the angle here.

For fans that love Cena, wouldn't cutting a promo like Cena did simply be catering to his fans who think he's the loyal, truth, justice, American Way hero while painting Rock as a relic of the past who is just pandering to the (admittedly LARGE) segment of fans who hate Cena's good guy persona?

And for those who hate Cena, wouldn't his promo further inflame the Cena-haters who think he represents the antithesis of everything that made the WWE so great in the Attitude era?

IMO, some of Cena's (and definitely a LOT of Rock's) words in the feud have a basis in truth, but I think most of this is just to get fans of either all riled up. Certainly seems to have worked on the Rock supporters judging by the comments here and in the RAW thread.

Is it part of your gimmick to constantly shoehorn CM Punk into your posts no matter what the topic being discussed is? Do you seriously believe a TATTOO is a good starting point for a feud?
