Before we get into tonight's SmackDown recap, I'd like to go ahead and throw out a plug. This week, Wrestlecrap named their annual Gooker Award Winner. It's "All Things Michael Cole". And I'm not just throwing it out there because it's R.D. Reynolds' biggest induction in the site's 10+ year history, but also because he absolutely NAILS the biggest ongoing problem regarding Cole:

The point of an announcer in wrestling is to promote the show, to make you want to see whatever it is you are watching. If you are out there saying that the women are awful, even if they are, what you are really saying to the folks watching at home, "Look at this stupid junk you're watching! Don't you have anything better to do?"

That's the job of a goof on a website like me.

It's not the job of the number one announcer of the number one wrestling promotion in the world, a guy who two minutes later is trying to convince you to spend money on whatever worthless C-level PPV they are trying to sell you this Sunday.

So next time Tamina pins Natalya and the camera pans out to a completely apathetic crowd, just remember...the Divas division may not be high on talent, but they didn't become a Self-fulfilling Prophecy of Suck until this idiot made them that way. And he's still at it, in what I will heretofore refer as the Reynolds Theorem.

Now...on to the show...

TONIGHT: Daniel Bryan faces both his biggest and smallest challenge at the same time. He faces Randy Orton in a non-title match! Plus, more build-up for the Elimination Chamber! Plus, some other stuff that doesn't have to do with the Chamber! SmackDown is NOW!

The Champ is NOT Here, as we go straight to...hey, we have NEW opening credits! Do You Know Your Enemy?

Hey, somebody FINALLY realized Undertaker hasn't been on this show in over a year!

Opening pyro! Our main event is Daniel Bryan facing off against Randy Orton! We are taped from Tulsa, OK!

LILIAN GARCIA starts the night off by introducing the Royal Rumble winner SHEAMUS, who comes out to a huge ovation. Your hosts are the three nuggets. It looks like it's promo time!

SHEAMUS: As the winner of the 2012 Royal Rumble match, I have won the right to be in the main event of Wrestlemania! And the next thing for me to decide is now, do I go for the WWE Championship or do I go for the World Heavyweight Championship? But realistically, we don't know who the champions will be until the Elimination Chamber PPV. And as history has shown us, there will be at least one title change that night. So I'll be watching both matches closely, but I promise you that by the end of that night, I will decide who to face. Now a lot of WWE Superstars have been telling me that I should make my decision right now. Well I don't like being told what to do. I don't like being pushed around. I never have. Because you see, as a kid, I was bullied. And I responded by fighting back. And yet...sure, I had my arse handed to me a couple of times, but I continued to fight back and the more I fought back, the better I got. Actually, I became so good at fighting that it brought me here to the WWE. But when I got here, when I got here, I came here, it started again. WWE Superstars telling me what to do, telling me "Don't spike your hair! Get a tan! Stop talking with a funny accent!" Well, I stood my ground. I refused to be bullied and it led me to the main event of Wrestlemania! You see...I'm a pasty-faced red-headed Irishman and I'm damn proud of it!

This promo has been brought to you by WWE's Be A Star program! Don't be a bully! Be a STAR! Anyway, interruption comes from WADE BARRETT and his crappy new music. Barrett enters the ring for rebuttal.

WADE: Sheamus...thank you very much for such a heartwarming story so early in the show. Now this might surprise you, but I do actually possess just a smidgen of respect for you. But right now, I'm gonna tell you exactly what you need to do. You need to go for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania, because if you did indeed decide to go for the World Heavyweight Championship, you're going to end up fighting me. Because mark my words, Sheamus, I'm going to win the SmackDown Elimination Chamber match...and as you know from very bitter experience, I can and I will beat you! And of course, Sheamus, if that were to happen at Wrestlemania, then you would forever be remembered as nothing more than a pasty-faced, ginger, Irish loser.

SHEAMUS: I'm sorry, fella. I wasn't really listening to you. I was too busy thinking of last week when Randy Orton kicked you all over this ring.

WADE: That's very funny. Well, what I was actually saying...

That cues our next interruption from CODY RHODES.

CODY: What you were saying, Wade, is of little to no significance. Unlike both of you, I know what it's like to have my hand raised in VICTORY at Wrestlemania. Unlike both of you, I know what it's like to be a champion here and now! Oh, you think I forgot about you? Unlike this audience, I don't have the urge to cry every time I see myself naked in a mirror! Let's get serious. The Elimination Chamber is a tax on the mind and no one's mind is more formidable than my own. It's my match to win! And what that means, Sheamus, is you're going to go down in history as the man who lost to the very first DUAL World Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champion, Cody Rhodes!

Next interruption comes from THE BIG SHOW. Hey, I smell a tag match coming. Do you?

SHOW: Now Sheamus, I respect you. You're not the type of fella that's gonna tell anybody what to do. So please, allow me to do it for you. Cody, if you don't shut your mouth, I'm gonna slap the taste right out of it! Try me! Now I'm not gonna come out here and tell you I'm gonna win the Chamber, like these two. I'm not gonna make a bunch of promises and braggadocio. I just want you to think about this. I want you think about Sheamus versus The Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania. Now THAT, my friend, is a match! THAT is a lineup, a match that is DEFINITELY worth the main event at Wrestlemania!

WADE: Hang on! Just...just hold on a second! I'm gonna be as polite as I can here, but...are you aware that you're nothing more than a Wrestlemania punch line? I mean, let's face facts. Even Snooki has had a more successful Wrestlemania career than you!

SHOW: Who?

CODY: He's...he's right. Apparently, Giants can win the Super Bowl, but not matches at Wrestlemania. You're like...like the Reverse Undertaker. Who are you gonna lose to this year? The boxer? The sumo wrestler? Maybe you'll just...

Show shuts Cody's face with a chop to the chest and a Pier 4 breaks out. Cody tries for a Beautiful Disaster, but gets caught. The faces clear out the heels. Hit Sheamus' music!

Later tonight, Michael Cole interviews AJ. Oh lovely.

The Great Khali makes his way through the backstage area. He faces Jinder Mahal NEXT!

Ad break - Raw promo

During the break, the logical tag match has been signed. Tonight, Sheamus and Big Show face Wade Barrett and Cody Rhodes.

JINDER MAHAL v. THE GREAT KHALI
Jinder Mahal gets half an entrance, but gets a Wrestling Challenge insert promo, in which he demands to replace Khali in the Chamber after he beats him.

Mahal slaps Khali, so Khali kicks his ass to start. Matthews tries to recap the feud between these two, as if anyone remembers and/or cares about that nonsense, at this point. Mahal chokes away, but Khali hits an elbow. Mahal hits a front facelock and gets tossed. Khali hits clotheslines. JUDO CHOP~! Tree Slam finishes this one quickly.

WINNER: The Great Khali - SQUASH! They need to make up their minds with Jinder Mahal. Are they going to push him or treat him like a joke? Be consistent!

Your hosts are the three grasshoppers. They show us what happened last week with Mark Henry getting himself suspended.

That takes us backstage to Teddy Long, Aksana, and her cheesy saxaphone music. More seduction that goes nowhere. Daniel Bryan enters the picture and demands answers about an afternoon BBQ. Bryan takes umbrage to Long eating meat and defines vegan. He's so sickened by Long that he won't be able to compete tonight. Long doesn't buy it and tells him to get ready for his match.

Later tonight, tag team shenanigans with Sheamus and Big Show facing Wade Barrett and Cody Rhodes.

Ad break

This Monday on Raw, Shawn Michaels returns!

"THE GLAMAZON" BETH PHOENIX v. ALICIA FOX
Beth gives Fox a chance to walk away peacefully. Fox declines and gets the early advantage on Beth. Beth doesn't appreciate this, but Fox continues the offense. Fox gets caught on a back elbow, but breaks away from a Glam Slam attempt. Fox gets a halfway Matrix dodge (nowhere near Trish's quality), but gets taken down. Glam Slam polishes off Fox in less than a minute.

WINNER: "The Glamazon" Beth Phoenix - Remember when they were trying to position Fox as a serious challenger? Ha! But at least they're doing SOMETHING compelling with Beth. When in doubt, just have her destroy everyone!

Post-match, Beth tries for some more punishment, but Tamina's music hits and TAMINA runs out. And again, she gets ZERO reaction. You can just SEE the apathy! Yup, the final result of the Reynolds Theorem illustrated before our eyes. Beth almost laughs this challenge off and walks away peacefully. Hit Tamina's music!

Randy Orton preps backstage. He faces Daniel Bryan later tonight.

Ad break

Here's a Rock video package to kill some time.

Backstage, Tyson Kidd and Natalya...no. I refuse to dignify this angle with any coverage.

THE BIG SHOW makes his entrance for our next tag match. He and Sheamus face Wade Barrett and Cody Rhodes next!

Ad break

THE BIG SHOW & "THE GREAT WHITE" SHEAMUS v. CODY RHODES & WADE BARRETT
The entrances are ALL ass-backwards here. Show comes in first, then Rhodes, then Barrett, THEN Sheamus. What kind of tag match intros are these?

Show starts off with Rhodes, but Show scares him into tagging Barrett. Show brings in Barrett the hard way and chops away. Barrett takes one chop and tags out again. Show tries for a chop, but Rhodes dodges and hammers away. Show absorbs it all and chops away, undaunted. Another big chop! Military press drop! Show calls for the Mayweather Sucker Punch, but Rhodes back away to the heel corner. Tags are made on both sides. Sheamus and Barrett lock up before Sheamus hammers away. Sheamus hits the ten-count chest strikes and schoolboys Barrett for 2. Barrett hits a back kick and brings Sheamus to the heel corner. Rhodes tags in, but gets piefaced to take us to our next ad break.

We come back with Rhodes trying to work over Sheamus, but gets slammed. Rhodes turns a Sheamus clothesline into a backslide attempt, but Sheamus powers him into a rolling fireman's carry slam for two! Show tags in and muscles Rhodes around. Show grabs the dreaded KIDNEYLOCK! It's as painful as it sounds! Rhodes boots a Show charge and the heels double-team Show for a bit. Rhodes hits a missile dropkick for 2! Rhodes grabs the chinlock, but it doesn't last long, as Show powers out. Barrett tags in and chop blocks Show. Running boot to the face gets 2. Back to the chinlock. Show powers Barrett into the corner. Rhodes tags in and hits the Beautiful Disaster for 2! Back to the chinlock. Show flattens Rhodes to end that. Tags are made on both sides and Sheamus comes in with Irish Hammers. Sheamus powerslams Barrett and Show spears Rhodes! Brogue Kick ends Barrett's night at about ten minutes shown!

WINNER: Sheamus & The Big Show - Decent formula tag match. The babyface comeback was much shorter than expected.

Later tonight, Daniel Bryan faces Randy Orton. Up next, Michael Cole talks to AJ.

Ad break

MICHAEL COLE brings out AJ. We take a look at what happened last Monday between Big Show, Daniel Bryan, and AJ. Cole asks AJ how she's feeling. AJ says she's getting the neck brace off next week, but Cole interrupts her and points out that nobody even knows who she is. Nice. Cole tries to goad AJ into blaming Show for what happened. AJ says she was at ringside at Daniel Bryan's request and she doesn't blame Show for what happened. She then turns the tables on Cole, telling him off for constantly berating Bryan, herself, and the whole Divas division. AJ says the WWE would be a better place if he shut his mouth. Cole goes off on AJ, saying he's doing his job with his insighful commentary and personality without a HINT of irony! Cole tries to throw Daniel Bryan under the bus by saying that AJ...would throw herself under a bus for him. Cole says AJ has no self-respect and will revel in Bryan failing at the Chamber.

DANIEL BRYAN comes out and threatens Cole, chasing him out of the ring. You know, let's add some post-edit transcription, since this was such a GREAT promo!

"That's enough! THAT is enough! You say one more word to my girlfriend, I swear I will break both of your arms! Hasn't this woman been through enough? You're gonna verbally harass her, because you don't like me? I've got news for you, Cole! I've got news for ALL of you! I am more than just a footnote. I am a great wrestler! *I* am the World Heavyweight Champion! And...I...am a role model. For example, this Sunday, I took a nature walk. Meanwhile, the rest of you were watching the Super Bowl and consuming copious amounts of meat and BEER! Let me ask you a question! While you were stuffing your faces with the flesh of murdered animals and drinking bottle after bottle of beer and soda...how many of you actually recycled? How many of you thought about preserving the environment for future generations? Let me tell you something. I recycle. I care about the environment. I care about future generations. And I care about AJ. Which is why, because you people have been so inhospitable to her, I am leaving the arena and I am taking AJ home. She has been traumatized enough. And by the way...just to show you how environmentally-conscious we are...we are leaving this arena in a Prius."

Cole starts RAILING against Bryan at the announce table and completely burying him. They need to SERIOUSLY scale Cole back, because he's a total albatross right now. The last thing anyone wants is Bryan's amazing heel act getting undermined by Cole's stale heel act. And there's no way around it, Cole is ACTIVELY TRYING to undermine Bryan here. Cole and Booker spend a good minute yelling at each other, because that always makes for GREAT television!

We go backstage, as Bryan escorts AJ out. Teddy Long stops Bryan and offers transportation for AJ. Long threatens to strip Bryan if he leaves.

Ad break

TED DiBIASE v. HUNICO (w/CAMACHO)
OH, COME ON! AGAIN???

Look, I'll tell you what. Why don't you cut and paste my recap for their first match five weeks ago, their second match three weeks ago, or their third match two weeks ago. You'll probably get the exact same match.

WINNER: Ted DiBiase - Ok, we've established the DiBiase/Hunico match. ENOUGH ALREADY! Come up with new matches!

Later tonight, Randy Orton faces Daniel Bryan.

Ad break - Raw promo

Elimination Chamber video package kills some time.

Your hosts are the three parasites. Michael Cole announces that John Laurinaitis will remain as the Interim Raw GM.

And here's a phone interview with SUPER DAVE LAURINAITIS. Because if anything can excite people watching at home, it's hearing JOHN LAURINAITIS ON THE PHONE! He says absolutely nothing of consequence.

RANDY ORTON makes his entrance for our main event. He faces Daniel Bryan next!

Ad break

This Monday on Raw, Shawn Michaels returns!

"THE APEX PREDATOR" RANDY ORTON v. DANIEL BRYAN: NON-TITLE MATCH
THE BIG SHOW has joined the commentary team during the break.

Lock-up starts us off. Second lock-up leads to an Orton shoulderblock. Both men exchange shoulderblocks and Orton gets another shoulderblock. Wrestling sequence leads to an Orton armbar. Booker makes my head explode by describing Bryan as a great mat technician, before describing Orton using a bunch of nonsensical cliches! Bryan hits European uppercuts and kicks. Bryan gets whipped into the corner and backflips behind Orton. Bryan runs the ropes and runs into an Orton dropkick. Bryan catches Orton coming off the ropes and works him over. Bryan charges in and gets backdropped over the top rope. Orton waves off Show and tosses Bryan back in. Orton tells Show that Bryan belongs to him, but Bryan catches Orton with a baseball slide. Bryan catches Orton with a running knee off the apron to take us to our final ad break of the night.

We come back with Bryan hitting the hammerlock. Bryan hits an armbreaker. Second armbreaker puts Orton down. Bryan kicks Orton in the arm. Orton drops Bryan for 2! Orton places Bryan on the top turnbuckle, but superplex is blocked. Bryan misses the diving headbutt! Orton makes the babyface comeback. Snap powerslam hits before Orton remembers to sell the arm. Hanging DDT is blocked and Bryan kicks Orton in the head! Bryan heads up top and gets crotched. Orton hits the top-rope superplex for 2! Orton stomps away on Bryan's ankle, but misses the kneedrop. Bryan hits the YAAAAAAH running corner dropkick! Bryan charges in, but Orton counters with the rollup! Bryan turns the cover into the LeBell Lock before Orton turns taht into a catapult! Orton catches Bryan on the apron and hits the Hanging DDT! VIPER COIL! Bryan slinks to the apron and hangs Orton on the top rope. Bryan grabs the title and tries to take a walk, but stops to attempt a cheap shot on Show. Show catches Bryan and tosses him back in the ring! Bryan yells at Show, but turns around into the RKO! But...we have a DQ and it's a LAAAAAAAAME one.

WINNER BY DQ - Daniel Bryan - I get the idea here, but calling that a DQ is a huge stretch.

Randy Orton is not happy at being DQ'd and blames Show. Since when does Orton care about the result of a non-title match? Orton shoves Show and Show shoves him down. Cole says "It's breaking down in Tulsa" and you just KNOW he was waiting all night to say that. Orton keeps diving at Show, as Show keeps shoving him off. And so our show ends with Show and Orton fighting each other, as Daniel Bryan slinks away up the aisle.

FINAL THOUGHT

Daniel Bryan is single-handedly carrying this show with his manipulative cowardly heel act. He's easily the best thing going right now and deserves major props for keeping this show entertaining in Mark Henry and Christian's absence.

Not much to say about the rest of the show, as we're just building up to the Chamber PPV. You'd think they'd want to maybe book a few matches with the PPV eight days away and all, but that's clearly crazy talk.

Until next week!

Why is WWE continuing to deliberately handicap their own product with Michael Cole's shtick? Is this a Springtime for Hitler plot or something?

How the hell has Cole not started to agree with Bryan? It's literally the simplest thing in the world to put over a heel turn. Good lord.

You'd think that with all of the 'ripping Big Show over his Wrestlemania record' that Show would've pointed out that he beat Barrett last year.

He actually was talking up Bryan during the main event, as he has been on Raw of late. It made the in-ring bit seem even more counter productive. WWE is aware enough of Cole being a problem to occasionally try to fix it but they won't commit to it and it's resulting in some strange week to week and scene to scene swings. Maybe they can put him on better meds?

AJ dropped a "quite frankly", which probably means Vince worked a bit on that whole scene and probably why Cole was being that way. I would've paid money to see Vince work with AJ on her speech.

All I can say about awful farting Natalya angle, is that if she actually 'killed' Hornswoggle last night, maybe it was all worth it...?

RECYCLING and driving a PRIUS makes you a heel!! My girlfriend pointed out the parallels between Bryan's promo and Portlandia, which I've been watching right after SD! since it came back a few weeks ago.

I did love Cody and Wade mocking the Show's 'Mania history. (For the record, the Internet tells me he's 3-8 lifetime.)

Big Show is gold on the mic. He put over Orton and Bryan and played straightman to Cole's schtick. He'd make a fine color commentator.

The Cole/AJ/Bryan segment left me confused as to who was supposed to be pushed. I assume this as to convince the audience that AJ was tricked by Bryan (a point already suggested on-air). But Bryan can't match the heat Cole has; Bryan has too many fans, and Cole's fanbase has to be measured in decimal points. Bryan's weasel-heel gimmick isn't as strong as Cole's because is smaller and weaker. They did this with Mark Henry too. He confronted Cole to cheers. They clearly want Cole to be SmackDown's top heel, if not the top heel in the WWE, and he can't carry it. He doesn't have the gift of gab.

The major problem with Cole is as outrageous as this sounds even for me, I truly believe he is Vince's Avatar. Vince knows he can no longer go in the ring anymore and has written himself into a corner with him being off TV even though I would take Punk/Vince over Punk/HHH or Punk/Laurantis. Vince is telling Cole what to say how to say it and pushing Cole to be an asshole. Vince doesn't understand why Punk, Bryan and Ryder are over and Cena after 5 to 6 years with being pushed by WWE's billion dollar empire, he still only gets a 50/50 if lucky 60/40 reaction from the crowd. They got themselves over instead of Vince creating them.

He is using Cole to bury those people on the mic. He realizes the crowd likes them, so he books them as looking good or just ok. He will continue to do this until either someone like HHH or Steph finally realizes that the Reynolds Therom is true or until Punk or someone else and it won't shock me if its Cena by the way, to legit announce to the world that Vince is in Cole's headset telling him what to say and they turn it into a storyline or someone just punches out Cole on live TV. This all could have been over at Mania, but no Vince's ego let it continue of embarrassing JR, Bryan and anyone else he feels is too big for their britches.

Also, did they just bury the Shaq/Show match?

Yeah, the whole AJ-Bryan-Cole dynamic is a little screwy. Anyone who tells Cole off in the ring is going to win points, but then Cole can't help but go off and remind everyone why we secretly hate AJ for being the "girl who refuses to see that her boyfriend is an asshole" and are waiting for her to recognize that. The last thing we want is for the top heel on the show (which unfortunately is Cole) to make her realize that.

Note to WWE: no matter what you THINK your demographic is, I gotta say that there were probably plenty of fans who drove home from that event in Priuses too. Michael Jordan once allegedly said "Republicans buy sneakers, too." Well Vince, Democrats buy PPVs too.

Did AJ get new music? I thought hers was some rocking tune, not some grrl pop fluff.

The exchange between Big Show and Sheamus was excellent. Book it, please. Keep them both faces. I don't mind face vs. face matches.

It's False alluded to it in the recap, but I just wanted to highlight how Sheamus cuts a Royal Rumble winner/Be A Star 2-for-1 promo, and manages to..

(a) suggest that kids getting picked on need to fight the bullies, and keep fighting them no matter how many times they kick your arse.

and (b) that he personally has refused to get bullied, as evidenced by this ridiculous stereotypical Irish accent he continues to use, despite 'bullies' telling him how phony it sounds.

Quality.

To say nothing of the fact that when you're as big as Sheamus is, people won't be trying to bully you for very long. I mean, seriously. This is SHEAMUS we're talking about.

(And he did plenty of bullying, himself, as a heel.)

This is a really good analogy for mine.

The Cole act is actively ruining shows.

Seconded. I wish they would pull Cole for two weeks so Vince can HEAR how much better the show is without him.

Life is hilariously cruel.

As annoying as Michael Cole is on the mic, Booker T is that much more annoying.

This regarding Sheamus about winning the Royal Rumble from Booker T....

"That man Sheamus has the ticket, will he cash it in at Wrestlemania? ....I'm calling it; he's gonna do it". Perhaps Booker T was alluding to Sheamus potentially winning the main event at WM but the statement itself sounds like something that is just too painfully obvious. Josh Matthews is not a bad commentator but is stuck between the 2 worst commentators and is lost in their non-sensical commentating. Please bring back Matt Striker.

Note to WWE: no matter what you THINK your demographic is, I gotta say that there were probably plenty of fans who drove home from that event in Priuses too. Michael Jordan once allegedly said "Republicans buy sneakers, too." Well Vince, Democrats buy PPVs too.

I can easily see Danielson becoming the 2012 Right to Censor, especially if Linda wins the nomination.

I'd say Bookah's actually been consistently entertaining, even though some of his entertainment value is from the fact that he spews so much nonsense. That much more annoying than Cole? Tell me you did not just say that, dawg.

Booker T says some silly stuff but he doesn't actively detract from the efforts of in-ring performers.

The worst thing Cole does is when he shits all over one of the other announcers (figuratively) and then he quickly changes the subject back to the in-ring action so they dont have a chance to make a comeback.

Mostly I'll defend Booker cause he's like the only announcer that keeps Cole in check by threatening him with physical violence.

The best we can hope for is she loses the nomination, not only for us wrestling fans, but the country as well. They go on a GOP rant and make Laurantis endorse Mitt as a joke or have a wrestler called T Party. The thing about Bryan is that he is making it work for him. He does come off like a hippie head up his ass d-bag, but god dammit he is so entertaining at it that a lot of fans are still cheering him, because he is having fun with it and so are they. People were worried that Bryan was going to be some bland champ, but he has turned on the charm in this role that I truly if he does fall back to the mid-card it will be on the WWE and not him.

I think the intent of the AJ/Cole segment was to get AJ over as a babyface, so that she'd be more well-liked, so that Bryan gets more heat for abusing someone the audience likes instead of just a tiny cypher. Cole going hard on Bryan kind of ruins it. I like where they're going with what Cubs said, where Cole slowly starts to buy in. It'll be hilarious if they both start to come around on each other's awful qualities. Not that wrestling needs emotional realism, but it's probably more true to their characters that they would still not like each other. But no amount of realism is worth undermining your own main event angles. Cole needs to get on board with Bryan's resourcefulness and strong personal conviction. Bryan needs to get heat by saying, Cole we've had our differences but I must admit you're an excellent announcer.

Also I'm sure I can't be the first person to suggest this but wouldn't it be great if Daniel started driving a Prius to the ring like Alberto Del Rio?

I hope you weren’t expecting Fall Brawl just yet. There’s still an hour of rock solid storylines to plow through first. For example, Jim Powers, VK Wallstreet, Hugh Morrus, and Maxx are here, and might do something noteworthy.
