That was the Cena I was looking for at Royal Rumble. People are just dying to see Cena fight like a destroyer. A little hate does RAW good. I enjoyed Michael Cole's "I can't remember the last time Cena acted like this!" Cole can't remember, what, three weeks ago when Cena destroyed Jack Swagger?

Kane's always had a way with the ladies. Might as well turn Eve into his new concubine. No one likes Eve with Ryder, or Eve in general. A heel Eve hanging with Kane couldn't garner less of a reaction than Eve as a face gets now.

Undertaker looked so sad when Triple H walked out on him. I like Undertaker not having a WrestleMania opponent being part of the storyline. Oh, won't anyone try to break his Streak?

Undertaker was the secret power behind The Nexus the whole time, and he ordered them to kill and bury him so he could return at full power. It finally makes sense! Also, Brother Love was the Anonymous GM.

Things that were good, if not great: Punk/Bryan was great, loved the whole sequence towards the end that started with Punk clocking Bryan with the kick, went to the superplex tease and finished with the GTS-crucifix-LaBell Lock run. It's kind of surreal seeing Punk play the lesser jerk in a feud, but I this hits a sweet spot for Face Punk, in that he freely acknowledges that he's a jerk, but he'll still put out his hand for a guy he respects. Also, the line drawn where Straight Edge = slightly less evil than Vegan is wonderful wrestling logic.

Orton/Ziggler getting time and being really good on top of the Champion vs. Champion match was an unexpected bonus. Zero complaints about the amount of excellent wrestling on this show, though Ziggler losing there doesn't help him in the slightest.

I love Regal so much. Six seconds of screen time, used perfectly. If they won't team him up with Brodus (which seems like it should be the natural move with Regal's sick dancing skills and his love of the Funkasaurettes), I want a Regal/Ace or at least Regal/Otunga feud next. (Otunga also deserves credit for continuing to make the most of the least amount of screen time.)

I also enjoyed the strangely subdued Truth on commentary. It was good to hear him still effectively work the character and be funny in that setting, and makes me hope they can figure out what to do with the guy. Truth vs. Swagger or, since brand walls have been eroded, Truth vs. Cody or Barrett would be a lot of fun.

Glad they gave Kofi the win. He deserves it and needed it, and I've really soured on Miz over the last year. The Raw Elimination Chamber field is kind of stunningly great.

Things I had...other reactions to:

Cena's savage beatdown and near literal, head-crushing, pre-meditated attempted murder of Jack Swagger a few weeks ago was a thousand times more brutal and hate-embracing than the beatdown on Kane last night.

No Ricardo?!

Jericho just coming out and attacking Punk like that after all the amazing metasegments before it just felt...off. I get the motivation (and that Punk did indeed step up the Best In The World references last night to lay the groundwork), but it still felt, well, perfunctory [/Otunga'd]. It just feels like there was a missing piece between Jericho's pledge to end the world heading into the Rumble and his "well, time to make the 'Mania feud!" attack last night, and I'm gonna wonder whether they changed plans during the week until I hear otherwise, because Jericho winning and then attacking Punk to make the challenge just seems like it would have felt more organic. Is it possible the plan was Jericho wins the Rumble, but the combo of Henry's extra injuries and Show/Shaq coming into focus made them switch things up?

(That said, the realization that Jericho inadvertently gave him the win dawning on Bryan as he sat against the barrier was terrific, and the opening segment kinda made me want to see more Punk/Sheamus interaction, which is a pairing I hadn't really thought of before.)

And finally, the HHH/Undertaker Mime-Off Part II. Man, I was sick of it last year, and the STARE MEANINGFULLY AT THE WRESTLEMANIA SIGN spot is now my least favorite thing in wrestling. If this doesn't lead to the Undertaker having to deliver a "HHH, you're the only man worth my time, the only reason I came back, the only true challenge left for me, the only person in this company who made me WISH I was dead!" kind of ego-strokefest, I will be stunned.

I hope the payoff for Undertaker's wig is that HHH tells him "NO REMATCH!" next week and Taker's hat and wig go flying up to the ceiling in shock, but then Johnny Ace comes over the loudspeaker and says "Oh, and the air conditioner will be fixed after the show."

I don't see why they think they have to wear wigs. It's not like Taker hasn't changed his look over the years. With Kane, I think he would look really cool bald with the mask. Like Jason.

Best one: King Kong Bundy and Kamala passing in the aisle. If I remember right, the feud never happened as I believe Bundy left, but man ... the anticipation!

I would not say I mind seeing her on my TV, she is ridiculously hot. But she does seem a little goody two shoes. A slut/heel turn might do her some good.

Same with John Cena running in to make the save on Eve. It would have come off so much cooler and more spontaneous if he just ran down the ramp without the 2.5 second blip of his theme.

You guys must really hate James Bond films.

In the Bond films, the villains always come up with these ridiculous schemes to try to kill James Bond, like putting a deadly spider in his hotel room or a snake or sending 50 dudes all dressed just like him out in the snow. All they gotta do is shoot him or blow up his car with him in it. The same goes for all those elaborate plans to do the simplest things like gassing the entire US Army and using a billion dollar laser to rob Fort Knox.

Then you have the goofy moment where Bond has to perform some death defying stunt to sneak into a place where the bad guys are instead of just using a cruise missile to blow the shit up. Can you imagine all the time and money the British government would be saving if they just killed the bad guys instead of sending James Bond after these people?

My point is that James Bond is just a fictional character in the movies and when he does shit or stupid shit is happening around him, it's because it's a movie written for our enjoyment.

The same thing goes for wrestling. The reason a guys theme music is played before he runs out is because that's just how it's done. It's not reality. It's a TV show. You can argue all day long about how they're real people, but it's still JUST a TV show, and like all shows and movies, things are done a certain way. With wrestling, that includes a characters theme music being played before he comes out on screen.

Unless she's hiding a ton of charisma, she wouldn't work as a Bride of Frankenstein. Now Daphnie, THERE'S someone who'd be a great match for Kane.

Check, and if we don't enjoy the movie because of something we should...uh... not ever bother to bring it up in the hope that said entertainment could be made better in the future?

Just because something is fictional, even mindless entertainment, does not put it above constructive criticism, and "it's just a movie" or "it's just wrestling" is a poor retort to a simple suggestion. If you disagree, cool; shake your head respond in kind. Get a conversation going. But don't just imply that the ability to criticize is absent due to the nature and intent of the production.

Using your Bond example, much of the reason Casino Royale (2006) >>>>> Die Another Day (which I did not hate) was the realistic bent taken by the reboot, at least in comparison to the other Bond films. But using your standards anyone after the latter film who would have dared question the ridiculous CGI scenes would have been met with "It's [just] a movie written for our enjoyment." I'm glad no one felt that way and the series could improve.

I see what you're saying, but at this point the "wrestler's music plays as he enters" is such an established trope for tv wrestling that being bothered by it is like being annoyed by all the unrealistic things that happen in a Harry Potter movie. In the closed universe that is WWE a wrestler's music plays when he appears. That just sort of happens. Whether it is because he has some sort of RFID chip implanted in him that triggers an automatic response upon arriving at the Gorilla position or, if as I like to believe, there's a guy there just waiting to cue up any entrance music of people who are going to the ring, it just is what it is at this point.

That's a much better argument than "It's just entertainment."

I don't have a horse in the entrance music race (and was merely annoyed with the typical "you can't nitpick entertainment" argument) but I would say if they're trying to shake up Cena, having him enter without it might have shock value because we're so programmed to wait for the music.

Semi-serious question...

Which Daniel Bryan were we watching last night: the one who is one of the greatest wrestlers in the world (not the Best tho), or the one who acts like a weasel and has been getting fluky wins over guys that he cannot beat straight up?

I loved the Punk-Bryan match as much as anyone, and appreciate that we got to see it on free TV. But WWE has been spending the last month or so reprogramming Bryan in a way that focuses less and less on his wrestling ability and more and more on his punkish (no pun intended) attitude and fluke title defenses.

If the general perception on Bryan has now become that he can't be competitive against his challengers (granted, they are/were supersized challengers), then did Punk's perception suffer in any way last night because that match *was* so competitive?

I think the big moment of clarity will be at the end of their EC match. Cena will either do something excessively brutal and be like "oh no what have my hands wrought," or catch himself just before going too far and be like "boy, in the end, I sure am glad I ultimately didn't go too far. OK, Rock time."

There was a match Bryan had with Kofi on Raw where he blitzed him in about two minutes (probably because the first segment went too long) that made me hopeful that DB's coward tactician routine was only for when he was overmatched by superheavyweights, and that he'd be closer to a more typical shortcut-taking indignant heel 'twere he to advance to programs against Sheamus or Orton. But Bryan with five guys in the deadly Elimination Chamber will probably still be "avoid and obfuscate" territory so I guess we won't know.

Sometimes this works, like when Austin's glass shatter noise hit and the crowd went nutso during Foley's first title win. But not every single time.

But, I thought part of the fun of CM Punk's character was to call attention to these little cliches, while being part of them. I loved him flipping the table at the contract signing and saying "this is a wrestling show. the table always gets flipped at a contract signing, so might as well get it over with"

Like when the wrestlers brawl their way out of the arena, back behind a curtained off area and there is a camera there waiting to pick up the action. I want one to stop and say, "Hey, what are you doing here?"

Cena is about to impale Kane with a shard from a shattered Chamber cell door, stops to remove the mask first and instead of seeing Kane's face, he sees his own face instead (as played by Darren Young in whiteface).

They hit the Evil Vegan thing hard enough and often enough last night, and had that segment in the locker room between Bryan and Punk that I think this was actually meant to be the debut of Heel Daniel Bryan 3.0, and Punk was literally passing him a variation of the Straight Edge Savior gimmick.

It's hard to say what that means in terms of his kicking ass vs. being a sneak ratio, since I get the feeling they let them have that Champ vs. Champ match because they won't be getting another chance to do it, but the fact that Bryan is now openly playing a heel instead of playing a Heel Disguised As Face, and the transition to either Sheamus or (hopefully) Orton (and I say hopefully because Orton seems to like working with guys who can work these days, or at least clicks with them really well) means we get some kind of mix between Heel Bryan 1 (psycho, tie-choking, spitting kick machine) and Heel Bryan 2 (insincere loophole exploiter).

Cole was banging on about that at the Rumble. He was claiming that Brodus calls that move the pterodactyl. All we can know for sure is that everyone involved is thick.
