Although Clare Fischer was a Grammy-winning American jazz composer, arranger and pianist, I came to know his work during his stint in the late 1980s as the strings & orchestral arranger for the Paisley Park empire, most notably on Prince's Under the Cherry Moon movie score and accompanying soundtrack album Parade as well as The Family's eponymous 1985 album.
It was always amusing thinking about an old white guy working with Prince on something so funky. I'm still not sure they ever had a face-to-face meeting.
Listen to the strings arrangement on this Rufus (featuring Chaka Khan) track:
That's good stuff. That's almost all Fischer for the last minute.
I will miss him knowing I won't be hearing any new work from him, but I feel a little better knowing I will still enjoy what he's already done - and find new things he had done in the past - for many years to come.
