Songs and Special effects weren't listed. I would have to say that while I am not shocked to see Super 8 not nominated for anything, but the fact that a 9-11 pandering movie is and by all rights is bad is in this thing makes me a bit pissed. Also, 9 nods, a weird number. Cheering for Gary Oldman in Soldier Spy even though its going to be a lost cause. I think this is the list we all suspected and Artist is probably going to win this thing.

I am stunned that Elizabeth Olsen wasn't nominated for Martha Marcy May Marlene. Fucking stunned.

Also, The Artist is going to win everything and deserve it. I thought that movie was pretentious gimmickry until my girlfriend made me see it. Absolutely delightful.

So, so boring.

EDIT: Fox didn't even put MARTHA up for consideration. No screeners or anything. Unbelievable.

A little stunned about Super 8 not being in special effects, I thought the train sequence alone deserved the nod. I miss movies with one giant set piece that looks amazing as opposed to a movie full of effects that bleed together ie Transformers and Harry. I'll be cheering for the Muppets song and the John Williams score out of nostalgia.

Congats to Dean Pelton for his nomination. I hope this is what it takes to get "Time Desk: the Chronicles of Dean Dangerous" made.

There is a chance we could see Bret McKenzie, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Jonah Hill all win Oscars in the same year. Okay, McKenzie is the only one who has a realistic chance but still, it's a real eye-opener for comedy fans.

Artist, Hugo and Midnight In Paris were my three favourites of the year, so I'm happy to see them all get nominated. The love for Hugo is kind of surprising --- it might have a shot at beating The Artist for best picture.

Not just Olsen, but John Hawkes should've gotten a supporting actor nomination. That guy was just an incredible villain.

Every year, it seems, the people who get screwed the most from the Academy are the people who actually pay to see the films. The general movie going public. You know... ME! (Well, US!!!)

We pay to see films in a theater, more than once sometimes, if I like it enough. Harry Potter? I saw it three times in the theater and it was fucking great! It made over a billion dollars at the box office. It didn't get a nomination for best picture though. Pirates 4... I saw it twice. It was shockingly better than I expected. It made a shit ton of cash also also, but it got snubbed as well by the Academy voters.

It's not even just the Best Picture category that is fucked. For Best Actor, where Andy Serkis? He totally carried that film on his shoulders and made you care about Caesar. Without him, that film would have sucked. And really, both the Best Actor and Supporting Actor nominees are from films that have made little money and most people isn't going to see. I mean Jonah Hill got nominated for a film that was about the most boring aspect about Baseball, which is already a boring sport to begin with.

Best Actress isn't any better. Three nominees for films no one will see, The chick from Dragon Tattoo that, considering the people behind the film, has strongly underperformed to where the sequels will still get made if they can chop the budgets by a lot (Oh yeah, I did end up getting dragged to it and I gotta say... Monica Bellucci did it better in Irreversible), and the woman from The Help.

Animation? Where's Cars 2? This makes the first Pixar film NOT to get a nomination. That just seems wrong to me.

What all this tells me is that the Academy voters are just completely and totally out of touch with society. They need to wipe the board out and start fresh, maybe with people born within the past 30 years or so, at least. The same with the MPAA as well, but that's another whole tirade to get into at another time.

Tree of Life? Hahahahahaha. I'd rather watch paint dry for 24 hours than to see that again.

I'll be pulling for Nick Nolte. He did a hell of a job in Warrior.

I'll also be rooting for "Man or Muppet". I still haven't been able to get that song out of my head.

I don't get why you care. Or anybody else, really. You paid your money, you enjoyed the movie, why do you need some anonymous body's stamp of approval on it? Are you worried that it somehow reflects poorly on your taste? It doesn't. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has always existed for one reason: so that members of the Academy can pat themselves on the back and tell themselves what a good and important job they do. The fact that they've gotten less credible in recent years doesn't mean that they were ever actually that credible to begin with.

In short, watch what you enjoy, and don't let your enjoyment be dictated by what some arbitrary panel of industry insiders thinks. Their approval doesn't make something good, and their lack of recognition doesn't make it bad.

I don't get why there are only two song nominees? Aren't there supposed to be five like every other category?

Rooting for "Muppet", but am shocked that's the one nominated and not "Life's a Happy Song" which is about as catchy and Oscar worthy as you can get.

I wonder if Cerebus is upset about the way Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part I was snubbed. It was the third biggest movie of the year in the U.S., and a bigger hit than Pirates. Why didn't Robert Pattinson get his well deserved best actor nomination?

How exactly do the Academy's nomination and voting choices screw you? Or me? Or us? What did they take from you? How do they get one over on you?

The only people who get screwed are the people who did work arguably as good as the nominated but aren't recognized, since Oscars nominations and wins do lead to better opportunities for them professionally. For instance, I think Drive got rather screwed. Trent Renzor and Atticus Ross got kind of screwed. But you know what? Everyone involved will be just fine anyway.

As for the general moviegoing public's tastes, that's what the People's Choice Awards is for.

I can see where Cerebus is coming from and to be fair the entire point of going to the above 5 nods was to get a film like Dark Knight in there when it was already crowded. That is why the next year we had Up, Bastards, Avatar and District 9, I doubt any of those would have made it any other year. It still lost to a war film that handful of people saw. This year, I think the Help is big money maker probably next to War Horse and Moneyball. If anything, I am a little surprised Harry didn't get in due to the giant amount of money it brought in. Pull a Return of the King where the worst of the series wins.

Every awards show is a pat on the back to a certain industry from sports to entertainment to even the Noble Peace Prize. Its all about getting rich people in a room and feel even more superior than everyone else on the planet. We all know that, but a good chunk of us still watch anyway, because we like competition. And yes, this is a competition. People want a horse to root for and if none of the horses you like show up then why watch the race? Its also used by the studios to get more money out of people to have them go to the movies to miss those films that their theater didn't play or they rent or netflix.

I'm surprised that of all the many, fantastic songs in Rio, "Real in Rio" was the one that got the nomination. (I know, not all the songs from the soundtrack were original to the film, but) I would have given it to "Fly Love", "Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)", or "Nigel's Song" before "Real in Rio".

Not that I disliked "Real in Rio".

I'm also a bit disappointed that Rio didn't get a Best Animated Picture nomination. But then, as has been mentioned, the Oscars aren't really worth getting upset about.

I KNOW. WHY THEY NOT NOMINATED THAT TRUCK FROM TRANSFORGERS? TRANFORGERS 3 FROM EARTH TO DA MOON WAS BIG HIT! WAY MORE PEOPLE SEE IT THAN FAGGY SILENT FRENCH MOVIE! IT NOT EVEN IN COLOR! WHY NO NOMINATE CARS 2? JUST BECAUSE IT SUCK? BEST PICTURE SHOULD BE TRANSFORGERS, CARS, TWILIGHT SPARKLE, BATMAN, PIRATES OF THE CARBIAN 6 AND THE SMURPS!

Every. Fucking. Year.

EDIT: That is, of course, unless something like Avatar or Return of the King gets nominated. THEN it's "ALL A MOVIE HAS TO DO IS MAKE A SHITTON OF MONEY AND IT GETS NOMINATED! IT'S BULLSHIT!!!"
