With God as my witness, I was thinking about digging my Atari out last night. Original controllers and 38 games. The stepson loves Asteroids in surround sound. ;-)
I have a theory that whenever a new flavor of Doritos comes out, it's because they made a mistake at the plant.
"Shit, Steve forgot to switch the sour cream and onion powder out when we switched from Lays to Doritos. What are we going to do with 8,000 lbs of Sour Cream and Onion Doritos?"
"Get Marketing to work immediately. I want to see a prototype bag layout on my desk by tomorrow."
We've had a bag of the Sour Cream & Onion Doritos sitting in our pantry for over a week now and nobody has had the courage to open it. It might be that the IDEA of SC&O Doritos are better than the actual thing. I don't usually like SC&O dip with tortilla chips so that may be part of it.
I haven't seen Salsa Rio Doritos in a looooong time, but love that they brought (what seems like) the original Taco Doritos back. We had a bag of the Pizza flavored ones recently that were quite tasty too.
"You are going to get a certain amount of snarkiness on the Internet no matter what, and my rule is that you don't post anything that you wouldn't say to someone's face." Marc Andreyko (Writer of DC Comic's "Manhunter")
SC&O and Salsa Rio are "limited edition" (check the upper left corner). If it had been on sale - and if I had felt like eating anything - I would have bought a sour cream & onion just for the weirdness. I'm sure when I eventually try it, I'll ask myself why I didn't just get Cool Ranch instead.
Taco is back for good (for now), and you can find it in the current packaging in some stores, and the retro packaging has a picture of the current packaging on the back to let you know what to look for.
More flavors in the photo I took (with minimal arrangement, although I had the banner excerpt in mind) and it's posted at G+ (plus.google.com).
Mmmm -- tastes like C++. (Not to be confused with Cheetos, which is for shell scripts, makefiles & other fluffier programming.)

But it's not right there in the vending machine at work at 3AM. And makes an even worse mess in the car on roadtrips. It's a logistical issue.

Plus, you can dip Doritos in the salsa for EXTRA deliciousness. EDIT: Semi-related thought... Have you ever noticed that Frito-Lay is the absolute master of the seasoned tortilla chip? All other brands and store brands of Doritos-type chips are awful. (Particularly Kettle's version. Ugh.)

The Taco Doritos came back like a year ago in the retro packaging, then came back in modern packaging, then the retro packaging came back again later.
My guess was people were thrilled to have them back, assumed the modern packaging Taco was something different and sales dropped, so they brought back the retro packaging again due to confusion.
Taco and Spicy Nacho are my current go-to flavors when I bother with Doritos at all, though I'll grab a bag of Sweet Spicy Chili out of the vending machine every once in awhile.
Oh...and original Doritos with Tostitos queso is far better than Tostitos chips with Tostitos queso.
Disappointed to discover my local Vons doesn't have the Sour Cream and Onion Doritos yet. I opted for the Pizza Supreme to satisfy my weirdo Doritos flavor craving.
