I caved and bought it last night. I like it, but I don't care for how they overhauled the controls.

So far so good, however. I just started the Road To Wrestlemania mode. What happened to having four or six different stories?

Emphatic thumbs down. Easily the worst Road to Wrestlemania mode I've ever played. I guess they felt with the widespread "customizability" permitted in Universe mode they didn't have to give us much choice in RTWM, but Sweet Lord! You cannot lose a match, and you can't even win a match the way you want to. You do damage till you get to push a certain action button (Y on the 360), and then it goes into a cutscene on that segment of the match. You're just beating people up to watch cutscenes of the matches themselves. The objectives are so specific you have literally no choices. You can't even tag out. --Do damage to Mysterio-- then he tags out. He tags in Cena. --Do damage to John Cena--this is literally how it goes. And the cutscenes/storylines aren't even good or clever. This must be how it feels to work for WWE.

The create an arena feature is cute, but they had that for the sole ECW video game waaaay back more than ten years ago. It still didn't make it a good game. They also took away enviromental grapples (crotching people on the post, the top rope, choking them on the bottom rope, bashing them headfirst into the stairs and retaining barrier), and needlessly complicated the submission system, so all in all I'd have say this is a massive step down from last year's edition.

I'm a fan. I almost didn't buy this because I was still having fun with SVR 2011, but it was so cheap because of the Black Friday deals that I just had to get it now.

The changes to the control scheme are pretty arbitrary and not quite the "overhaul" but once you get used to them, it's the same ol' Smackdown with some slight variations (like being able to target certain body parts which really doesn't matter if you don't want it to).

They did kick up the AI reversals, but at least you can customize and set them way down to make the AI less "God" like.

It does seem buggier than previous releases (it actually froze on my a few times during Road to WrestleMania) and they still haven't quite mastered the WWE Live mode. It always takes a couple of tries to get in and another few to download anything, at least for me.

Road to WrestleMania blows, but I've never been a fan of that anyway because it's just too linear for me. The only reason I ever played it is to unlock things. This time around, I just purchased the Xbox Live "Unlock everything" mode because it froze up on me during Bragging Rights.

But enough about the negatives. The customization in this really shines. You can set the champions for both shows, and set what the shows even are. I made WWE RAW and replaced Smackdown with "Monday" (it's really Friday) Nitro.

I just had Sting beat HHH to unify the WCW and WWE (Attitude-era belt) World Titles at WrestleMania and it actually treated it like a unification match and everything. Starrcade is now my December PPV and Clash of the Champions replaced, I dunno, some other PPV.

The game still messes with things, like splitting up certain tag teams, factions, etc. without me wanting it to. Or it'll turn a wrestler heel for seemingly no good reason (sometimes this works, sometimes not so much). But I still appreciate the effort and the fact that the WWE Universe can surprise me every once in a while.

Overall, the customization this game gives you makes it really worth it if you're into that sort of thing. It's not quite TNM sim level, but the presentation is amazing for a wrestling game.

The Superstar Threads idea...great idea, terrible in execution. I was really hoping to put Cena in a Nexus shirt, or an nWo shirt on just about everyone, but no chance. At least I was able to make Sin Cara Negro. Isn't there a Superstar edit function somewhere, anywhere?

speaking of threads, I'm disappointed the "dusty cowboy boot" style for boots is not available. Which is funny, since Husky Harris wears them (naturally, being a Windham and all).

This game feels really unfinished. I'm no fan of the annual update where they don't do anything more than changing the roster, but it kinda feels like they tried to change too many things and didn't quite get done. I bet it will be a really good game in a year or two.

Good:
- The roster is reasonably up to date. By the time SDvR 2011 came out, I had to download fan-made versions of Daniel Bryan, Alberto Del Rio, and all the Nexus guys. A quick check of the WWE 12 roster didn't show too many obvious gaps, though that might have as much to do with WWE not bringing in as many new guys this year. And luck was involved - I don't imagine they knew that

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
the classic IC belt would come back
...but it's an unlockable in the game.
- The commentary is a bit better. Cole doing commentary on his own match is pretty funny.
- I like that limb damage has actual effects other than just making the injured guy hold that body part.
- All the customization options are neat. I switched Mark Henry to a black singlet, downgraded Michael Cole's stats to reflect that he's not a wrestler, upped William Regal's stats because he's the best guy, increased the damage done by weapon shots and finishers, scaled back the rate of AI reversals, and made an ECW arena (though I bet there's an unlockable one in the game).

Bad:
- Either the kickout system is broken, or I'm just that bad at it. SDvR 2011 let you change it to a basic button-mash for kickouts, but that option doesn't seem to exist this time around.
- A quarter of my ring mat turned black and stayed that way until I turned the game off. Patch plz.
- It's too easy to click the left thumbstick and change who you're targeting. And with manual targeting on, your guy can get beat up for 15 minutes while still thinking that he should be punching the ref. I had to leave those ugly labels on to prevent such incidents.
- What are those ropes made of? My goodness.

I like the kickout bar. It's like trying to kick FG in Madden.

---

I was disappointed to download a pretty good Tully this morning, only to find that he didn't use the slingshot as his finisher. I'm pretty sure it's in the game, since I saw someone use it the other day.

I'll hopefully get WWE 12 as a Christmas present.

Hey, how many dead wrestlers are in the game?* If there are enough to put on a show, that's probably what my WCW Monday Nitro will consist of.

*EDIT: Aw. I just looked at the roster. Not nearly enough dead wrestlers.

I'm just starting June's pay-per-view, Fatal 4-Way.

Drew McIntyre has been my #1 character, and he's basically been destroying everything in his path. A member of the SmackDown brand, he won the Royal Rumble, and defeated John Cena for the WWE Title at the main event of WrestleMania.

Though Cena did give McIntyre the Attitude Adjustment, and I was like, "oh shit oh shit OH SHIT!" Somehow, by the grace of God, I kicked out, and shortly thereafter beat Cena with the Future Shock.

McIntyre has been a fighting champion; he's even defended the belt on Superstars. He retained the title against Cena at Extreme Rules, Sheamus at Clash of the Champions (May), and he'll defend against Austin, Cena and Sheamus at Fatal 4-Way in the main event.

McIntyre even defended the title three times in less than a week: Sheamus in an Extreme Rules, Falls Count Anywhere, Two-out-of-Three Falls Match at the Clash, Cena in a cage match on a special "Championship Edition" of Monday Nitro, and Edge on SmackDown.

Current Champions:

Nitro

World Heavyweight: Brock Lesnar (2nd reign)
United States: Zack Ryder (3rd reign)

SmackDown

WWE Champion: Drew McIntyre (1st reign)
Intercontinental Champion: Randy Orton (1st reign; just defeated Daniel Bryan at Fatal 4-Way)

Universal

Undisputed Tag Team: Drew McIntyre & Alberto Del Rio (1st reign)
Women's: "The Amazing" Morgan Wilson (CAW; 1st reign)

Universal, unranked

European: Goldust (1st reign)
Cruiserweight: Tyson Kidd (1st reign)

I love the variability of matches. You can set up all sorts of things, even making them your new "default". I have all Extreme Rules matches set as Falls Count Anywhere. It's one of those "DUH!" things. I don't like cage-escapes, so all cage matches are won by pinfall or submission only.

In SvR '09, Championship Scramble matches were frustrating as hell once three or four people were in the ring, because there'd always be someone there to break up a pinfall attempt. So I made all Championship Scramble matches, Falls Count Anywhere, to alleviate that somewhat. Of course it came back to bite me at a point where I was attacking someone on the outside and someone on the inside scored a pinfall. But hey.

I enjoy the gameplay, and the RTWM so far (I just finished the Villain story) is enjoyable for its campy storylines and

Drew McIntyre, World Heavyweight Champion
.

That said, I can't believe THQ let this thing out the door with the community creations as unusable as they are. The servers are unreliable to the point where it's not worth even trying.

Yeah, the server unreliability is the #1 complaint by far on the WWE '12 forum, which I usually swing by once a day.

Incidentally, I wrote a thread on the forum regarding a Hometown Hero suggestion for WWE '13-- which has been universally well-received. People are even tweeting the creator to try and get it to happen. Check it out. I don't particularly care about credit for the idea or not, though of course if THQ wants to send me a check out of the goodness of their hearts, I'll happily accept it. ;)

Oh, and John Cena turned heel in my Universe Mode.

He and Steve Austin were in the semi-main of a SmackDown between WrestleMania and Extreme Rules. They teamed up to battle Austin's rival The Miz and Cena's rival Edge. I played as them, and the Austin/Cena dream-team picked up the win.

But while they were celebrating, Cena suddenly attacked Austin! I was stunned and elated!

I turned Drew McIntyre face manually shortly thereafter, since it made no sense for both him and his rival Cena to be booed by the audience. Drew seems to me to be bewildered by the fact he's suddenly getting cheered.

And Cena as a heel cracks me up. Once, before a match with Austin, he hid underneath the ring and attacked him during his entrance. Another time, he attacked Austin before a match which Austin won, and Vince McMahon told Austin not to leave, because he was facing Cena immediately.

And in the recent Fatal 4-Way match involving McIntyre, Sheamus, Austin and Cena for the WWE Title (of those, only Cena was heel), when the match stopped going his way, Cena slid out of the ring and grabbed a chair.

To say nothing of the fact that all his big moves (Protoplex, Five-Knuckle Shuffle, Attitude Adjustment and so on) tend to have various "Hey, look at me, WWE Universe!" aspects to them. When he does it as a bad guy it's like he's mocking people. I love this version of Cena.

Borrowed my newpew's copy while he's out of town. I think I like it enough to buy. I paid for the unlock everything cheat, since I don't have the kind of time to devote to wrestling games that I used to.

Some questions about Universe Mode. I went through all the trouble of creating separate WCW and WWE brands with separate rosters, but there seems to be some bleedthrough. (Title rankings, for example.) My first Nitro's card matched up WCW's Road Warriors against WWE's Santino and Kozlov. Is there any way to keep the shows' rosters completely pure? And is there any way to turn Superstars into a third-brand show? I can't seem to change the rosters for that show.

I absolutely never take the advice of the computer when it comes to creating matches in Universe mode. After awhile it'll just keep recommending the same matches, anyway, completely ignoring whatever storyline you're trying to put together. This year's version isn't yet smart enough to figure out what the human's trying to do. It ain't gonna pass the Turing Test, in other words, that's for dang sure.

Hey, you're doing WCW Nitro and WWE (presumably) SmackDown, too? Cool, so am I.

There is no way to prevent the other brand's wrestlers from occasionally appearing on the show and causing random interference, or making a save for someone upon returning from injury, or attacking one of his rivals or helping one of his friends. Again, with the highly questionable Remarkable Match AI, it'd behoove you to take the effort to create each match yourself and keep the brands separate.

And you've gotta clear out to the menu screen after each one, too, instead of being able to book the card in advance. Yeah, there are some things that they can stand to improve upon for WWE '13. But I've had a blast with the game despite that; I'm now in November of Year 1 in Universe Mode, and I didn't even start the mode until after beating all three stories of RTWM.

There is no way to create a third-brand show. The Thursday show will always feature talent from both brands. I usually use Superstars to get some young talent some experience (OK, there's no XP in this game: strictly speaking, I want to get them exposure), same as WWE does in real life.

And since I use the European, Cruiserweight and Light Heavyweight Championships, Superstars has title matches on the same frequency as Nitro and SmackDown, which is to say, quite often. (I've just started using both lightweight belts because I got a new 360 with built-in WiFi, connected to XBox Live, and downloaded a TON of fan-created WCW cruiserweights).

Incidentally, if you're using the 360 version of the game, there are phenomenal fan-creations of Psychosis, Juventud Guerrera, Ultimo Dragon and Lash LeRoux. If any of those interest anybody, lemme know and I'll see if I can track down the exact ones I downloaded.

Has anyone had any success with making effective created finishers? I know you can make some wild off-the-top rope ones, but I have yet to see many created finishers facing an opponent which look effective.

One thing I wanted to do was the start of an Asai DDT, but on transition it to a Stunner. I was also hoping to make a version of Tyler Rekk's finisher.

Seems like most of the creatable finishers lack impact.

Anyone remember that one Tajiri move? (I think it was called "Karate Rush" in game.) I wanted to recreate that, but all the punches to the face they give you don't look right. So I just went with 8 bodyshots, a kick to the balls and a roundhouse kick to the face. Still don't like how it looks.

I spent a few minutes making my usual suplex stunner and discovered half an hour later they had included R-Truth's as a standard move.

I bemoan the lack of a clean suplex-to-piledriver transition for the Steiner Screwdriver.

I got the game for Christmas, and it took me a good three sessions to get the hang of the controls. I'm OK with it now, but I do not like the interruption of finishers in three- or four-man matches. It's not easy to hit the big moves to eliminate someone.

I'm hoping there's a way to select which Road to Wrestlemania story you can play. The game seemed to go right to Villain without giving me a choice.

I do not like that wrestlers will debut in Universe mode but won't be unlocked. I've seen Demolition and Goldust a few times in singles matches, but they're not in my roster lists or my unlocked stars listings.

In general, the lack of communication for the new controls and game construction hurts the accessibility. THQ played it cool by sending folks to a PDF download, but those in-game tutorial listings are lacking in specifics. Like, hey, there will be tag matches when you can't tag out. No, you're not failing to grasp the new tag controls. Yes, you will fucking hate fighting Big Show in this situation. This game expects you to catch up as you're going along, and that stinks more than a little.

I don't like the TV camera presentation of the matches. The figures are smaller. The game may look more like a TV show, but I want an experience distinct from the show. You can only watch the show. It's passive. The game keeps me at arm's length this way when I want to be oriented more inside the ring, not at stock camera positions. The few cuts to in-ring action aren't enough.

My MOVEZ~! nitpick is that while the slingshot suplex is in the game, it apparently is not a finisher, making my Tully Blanchard CAW annoyingly inaccurate.

Nope. You go Villain, then Outsider, then Hero. You can only pick individual stories once you beat all three.
