Here at work, the boss' computer has a virus or malware, it won't run any application you pick, other than IE.

We have Avast installed, but it pops up "which program would you like to run this file".

I've downloaded a different antivirus and malware bites, but again, any time I use it, it's popping up to choose a program.

What do I do? (other than call the IT guy, who does not exist)
EDIT: I have tried to do a system restore to a point from last month, and get the same exact pop up.

You can try to restore the file assocations using the downloads here:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Or sometimes you can just rename an exe to .cmd or .bat and it will run.

Thanks for the advice, I downloaded that, and tried to run it, and got the same box opening up asking what program to use.

They have a tech guy coming tomorrow to figure it all out. Thanks!

sounds like a rootweb. If you have another computer, download AVGs bootup checker, load it on a stick and boot to the stick and let it run.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

When I got to open certain websites (fark.com, myspace and a few others) I get a message in a pop up window that tells me I must "Connect Broadband Connection".
