The Yankees acquired Raul Mondesi from the Jays tonight for ... well, a bag of balls and some spikes to be named later.

I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles.
I asked Timothy Leary, but he couldn't help me either.

Those spikes were attached to some minor-league pitcher. But really, what I want to know is does Cashman have incriminating pictures of Riccardi or something? Or was it just that they were willing to pay Mondesi's contract?

Dumb trade by the Yanks. Mondesi for nothing is a bad trade, because Mondesi, given his contract, is a net negative.

As generally overrated as Mondesi is, if he can pull his average up to a smokin' .250 he should be a fair sight better than Van der Wal and Spencer.

I'm just surprised the Yankees pulled the trigger this early. Is this an indication that Floyd if off the market, or is he going somewhere else?

Is Rondell White on the DL, or what? This makes for a potentially crowded outfield, as White can be fairly good - when he's healthy, that is. Spencer isn't too bad, Vander Wal's a good spot hitter that can play for a couple of weeks if needed - not a bad 5th outfielder by any means.

I would assmue Floyd is currently off the market, as the Fish are in wild-card contention; dealing Floyd would essentially mean that they concede, something they're not willing to do yet. If the Fishies deal Floyd, it'll be really close to the deadline, I would figure.

According to Jayson Stark, it saves the Jays $12.5 million this year and next. Yup, it was a straight salary dump. I mentioned this in another thread, but the Jays need to dump more of their outfielders (Stewart and Cruz) in order to revamp their lineup completely. Ricciardi knows what he is doing and this is only the beginning.

The Marlins wanted Nick Johnson included in the deal for Floyd. The Yanks are not willing to let him go.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, the Jays are actually paying half of the $12 mil this year and half the $15 next year.

BTW, this puts the Yankees payroll over $130 million.

The split I saw from Stark was:

2002: Jays pay 0 for the remainder of this year, Yankees pay remaining $5.5M.

2003: Jays pay $6M, Yankees pay $7M.

I am going to quote and link to the story that I believe is the same one that Pieman is looking at.

"As an $11 million to 13 million player, Mondesi didn't look too attractive. But to the Yankees, he becomes a $7 million player. (Remember, that's less than Jeffrey Hammonds or Jose Lima make.) And as a $7 million addition, he's a beautiful sight.

The Yankees considered their other alternatives -- Cliff Floyd (if he becomes available), Matt Lawton (if he gets healthy), Randy Winn (if the Devil Rays deal him) and the other two available Blue Jays, Shannon Stewart and Jose Cruz Jr. And this was by far the best option out there right now."

To answer another question - White has been playing Left so the Yanks OF will now look like this - White, Williams, Mondesi.

Plus, Torre is constantly rotating the OFs to give one a day off extra. And we all know that Rondell is going to tear his ACL getting out of bed.

Plus plus, Vander Wal just hurt himself (I think he fouled a ball off his foot the other day).

Plus, plus, plus - many a team has asked about Spencer so don't be surprised to see him move off somewhere to acquire another arm.

Does anyone have any ideas as to whether or not the Yanks are going to try and get a left-fielder now, possibly moving Spencer to do so?

Oh, and to clear up something else from earlier, that set of spikes was attached to Scott Wiggins (2-1, 2.28 ERA at Norwich Double-A).

This trade just made me remember the Shawn Green-Mondesi trade from a couple years back ...oops?

As I am *so* unimpressed the start of the Raul Mondesi Era in NYC, allow me to let the Sports Guy to perfectly state my feelings on the trade:

"Were the folks in the Yankees front office just sitting around saying to themselves, 'We need an overpaid right fielder, someone with declining skills, someone who never plays for winning teams, someone who could potentially infect our clubhouse like the ebola virus ... could somebody call the Blue Jays and see if Raul Mondesi is available?'"

This reminds me of when the Mariners needed a hitter a couple of years back and they traded for ex-USC free safety Al Martin. I'm just extremely happy there appareently won't be a Cliff Floyd Era in pinstripes.

Well, I think I remember Green saying he wanted out of Toronto, and that he wanted to go somewhere with a bigger Jewish community... and the only two Jewish major leaguers I can think of other than him were Greenberg and Koufax. I dunno where Greenberg played, but I think it goes without saying where Koufax played.

Anyway, as an unrepentant Bosox fan, let me just say to the Yankees: HA ha! Did you need ANOTHER overpaid, overrated OF? First you pay Rondell White to find new and inventive ways to injure himself, now Mondesi, who can't hit for average, and somehow has managed to not drive in 100 in a season, despite being acquired to produce runs? To be fair, though, he does bring yet MORE steals and a good arm. Besides, the Yanks seem to win with underachievers (Knobby comes to mind) and role players (didn't the Diamondbacks steal that model last year?).

Bah. Like the Yankees needed more talent. I think his numbers will be higher because he wasn't happy before. Now he's playing on a team that's almost a world series lock. Bah.

Ayup. And actually, despite all the flack the Yanks will catch, Mondesi *WAS* needed. The Yanks OF core is hobbled and since the Yanks could get Mondesi cheaply, with the Jays helping to pick up the contract - why not?

Apparently from the UnderTheKnife newsletter, Spencer is playing with torn ligaments or tendons in his wrist now and may go on the DL soon. And Rondell White's littany of leg iunjuries is actually due to having broken a leg as a kid and it not healing properly - to the point where one leg is shorter than the other, ergo the career-long leg problems. Add that to Bernie having continual shoulder problems and Vander Wal having just goofed his leg on a foul ball Sunday night (though he did play last night), and prospect Juan Rivera breaking his kneecap just days after being called up to the bigs - and the Yanks were starting to get desperate for OF'ers.

Apparently, Torre will rotate the guys depending on platoon splits and health concerns. But then, Torre loves to baffle so who knows.
