A pop-up list of bracket codes that are supported by the board, perhaps a [youtube] code.

As easy/fun as it is to mock certain posters, and while the iron fist is appreciated most of the time, maybe loosen up a little bit on posts/threads you don't specifically like (polls, lists, youtube, etc.) Yes, they're generally annoying, but they'll foster a more congenial atmosphere, which might lead to more people signing up/posting.

I'd like to see it change as little as possible.

I like it here. I really don't care about gimmicks (like Like buttons) and customization and all that. Plus, I can still read this board on my 30000 year old computer, and the number of websites I can say that about it rapidly dwindling. (Yes, I have another computer here that I use for the other stuff, but this is the one I sit and eat at.)

The-W iPhone App.

I'd even be willing to pay an annual fee of $1.99 for easier viewing on the iPhone. The site is easy enough to format on the phone but it would be nice to not have to do it every time I want to view it on my phone.

* Uploading of images

I am hesitant to allow uploads of files. I don't mind displaying your pictures via links, but hosting them feels like a different level of responsibility for their content. I also don't want to get into the discussion about copyright. I think the way we are doing things now is working and above board, but I'm not a lawyer and I'm sure we can learn from one - I just haven't consulted with one ever.

Technically, this board had image upload features in the 1.6 version we started on... I ripped them out. We could see if we could re-implement them if it was a huge win but I'm skeptical.

Loading the images from the server would be faster and more stable than loading them from your image hosts, though. Maybe we could figure out some sneaky way to cache the images for trusted users. I'll think about this a little and talk to CRZ about it later.

Maybe we could implement it as a premium feature for trusted members.

* iOS app

Interesting idea. I'm not sure if $2 defrays my programming time on it, though - and I can't outsource it for that. Want to help with this? Do some research and see if you can come up with an iOS in a box kit for website admins to convert web applications into iOS stuff. I'll read links, but I don't have time to dig right now.

* YouTube

Maybe a forum for this? I don't know. I like the embedded videos in the Video games forum. I like the wrestling show write ups. I don't know that I want Random to become pictures of nut shots.

How have you seen this handled elsewhere? Give me community examples where you think it really works or adds value.

* Dem Wimmins

Is there value in the sex color coding at all? Maybe we just move away from that completely. Would there be an outcry if I just removed the different colors in the themes and still allowed people to identify or not in their profile?

I wanted to call this one out seperately, so that the discussion of what I don't want to do doesn't get threaded with what we do

We are already backed off, a lot. This place would be 10 people posting only if "perfect rules" were enforced. That's not to say that the majority of people's posts arent wanted or needed, or that you aren't a part of this community - it's just that the perfect world scenario boils down to just the people you'd want in your living room for a superbowl party.

|-perfect----|--where we are--|-------"backed off"---|

If you keep moving down that line, eventually everything becomes allowed. Would we get more people? Probably. But..

I don't want this to be a place that I don't want to read. I can't stand some of the forums out there. This one is still pretty good, in my not so humble opinion.

Anyway, philosophy...

OK, I was waiting for him to reply first, and since he did (twice), I can assess what we've got here.

Our story so far:

VOTES UP/DOWN ON POSTS: I like this too, but I have to teach myself AJAX before we can implement anything like this.

TROLL AMNESTY: We already had that. There isn't anybody who isn't currently banned that I would want coming back. In fact, out of the 53 names on the banned list, they probably represent like six actual people.

MAKING PRIVATE MESSAGES EASIER: I know you dudes love using this board in place of email and instant messaging, but we really love encouraging you to use email and instant messaging. Hell, you can even add Direct Messaging on Twitter to that.

ZEITGEIST LINKS: I have thought about ways of doing more like what The Bucs Fan wants, but I don't have a good idea yet. I'd like to find some way to set it up to not change the behaviour for the entire universe. MAYBE I can set it up to act differently if one is logged in, but this isn't the sort of thing where I want to spend a lot of processing time and subroutines just drawing our index page. I'll think about it some more.

THE BUCS FAN IGNORES TOO MANY PEOPLE: I don't see us changing the current setup where you can unignore one post at a time. If this REALLY bugs you, keep in mind that it's a tradeoff - and you're just gonna have to start unignoring some people and train yourself to skim past certain posts without reading them, I think.

AVATAR SPACE: Even when we started, we'd host images for anybody who asked us. I don't know if we want to get "automatic" about it due to the concerns previously mentioned, but I'll wait and hear Guru's ideas first.

MMA FORUM: We already have one...it's called "Sports That Aren't..."

BE MORE LIKE DELPHI: I still can't think of a good way to do this without breaking the overall "mark forum read" concept, and I like that concept too much to change it. But maybe we could do something else and let you keep, like, your own list of "bookmarked" threads which you COULD mark at whichever reply you like. I would need to design it, but I can see it in my head.

PEOPLE THAT POST ABOUT BOOKS AND MUSIC: Yeah, that'd be nice to have. Know any?

OFFICIAL MOTTOS: I have another idea for UNofficial mottos

ANONYMOUS DAY: We can't bring it back until I remember how I did it the first time

USER TITLES: I love them. They can't change until I stop loving them.

CHAT ROOM DURING SHOWS: I can't remember how our Jabber server didn't work. I spend my time on Twitter during shows now, so I'm not inclined to come up with a way to replace Twitter.

TWITTER TRENDING TOPICS: They're pretty dumb. If something grabs you, there's nothing keeping you from starting a thread right now (except your fear of me calling you out as dumb, I guess)

LETTING FOLKS LOG IN VIA FACEBOOK OR TWITTER: This is an intriguing idea, but would probably clobber us performance-wise. Or maybe it wouldn't! I'm also concerned about letting Facebook get their hooks into us because they already track every other site on the web which uses 'em. That's one of the reasons I didn't bring back their "Like" button. I dunno...registration here is a one-time thing when you do it correctly. Is it really too high a bar for people who would want to participate here?

LONGER TIME BEFORE A THREAD IS LOCKED: No way Jose - I STILL get replies that make me wish I locked threads after 24 hours (and they are all by The Thrill). Any mod can unexpire an expired thread if it's needed. Otherwise, start a new thread and reference the previous one.

SPECIAL GUEST MODERATORS: We already have too many moderators

WHO'S IGNORING ME? Can't do it. It's just a bad idea for you to know. Hell, *I* don't even want to know if I can avoid checking the database.

FACEBOOK PAGE: I think I created a Google Plus page for us, too, but it's more to hold down a space than for anybody to actually use it or even know it exists - for that matter, please ignore this paragraph

LOOSEN UP, CRZ: Hey man, I'm loose. I think that you'll find that almost anything has gone after I banned C. I'm getting more complaints than ever, in fact, so I know I'm too loose!

YOUTUBE CODE: Man, I don't know what to tell you. It should be super easy to copy/paste their "old" embed code from their site to ours, and yet people still can't grok the YouTube. If I were clever, I'd let you post "new" embed code in without us complaining about s but I seem to recall we had a super reason dealing with security for denying that action.

POPUP LIST OF BRACKET CODES: This is pretty good - I could see me coding a "ribbon" for text formatting code entry. I don't know if I need to know AJAX for that or if some simple Javascript would be enough. I'll have to play around with it and see what code comes out of it. The other idea is we get one of those free Notepad-like editors and just plug it into our newthread/reply pages, but that may make things overly complicated...

NO CHANGE AT ALL: I promise I'll try to keep a "classic" interface around if we get too out there.

MOBILE WHAT: This is the other end of the spectrum - it would probably be super easy and take no time at all to convert all our pages to m.the-w.com - but neither of us ever gets around to doing it, hoping that eventually phones will be so smart they can just act like every other browser on the planet. Guinness, if you just tell us what needs to be different (screen resolution I'm guessing? Bigger or smaller text? More space between links I know) maybe we can finally get down and mock it up for your approval.

ORACLE OF THE W CONTEST: Every time we turn over a new year, I swear I'm going to set this up, and every time I laze out and it doesn't happen. This year for sure? PROBABLY NOT

That's it for now. Maybe I inspired you to ask something else! Maybe I'm talking to myself at this point! Stay tuned - our massive tenth anniversary celebration is a mere FOUR WEEKS AWAY!

I agree with the +1 or promoting of comments. Other than that, I have no requests or suggestions. I like the way it is/was.

As to the mobile site suggestion, I've been viewing and posting to this site exclusively on a smartphone for the last year. The iPhone doesn't have many issues displaying anything here; I pinch to zoom on the home page and double tap the posts so they fill the screen. Very intuitive, very easy. The double tap cuts off the author of the post, but I scroll left when I'm curious. Posting is easy, the text wraps and all functions work perfectly. Android, on the other hand, has some issues with every browser I tried where the text doesn't wrap and it becomes a jumbled mess.

But seriously, thumbs up from me. Can't believe we're approaching ten years here. Thank you both for keeping it around.

This pretty much sums up my experience with iPhone. I was just offering up a suggestion really.

When I think of how the app would function it would basically be a set up where when I tap into a topic, the table that holds the body of message would format to the screen size of the iphone (or other devices...not sure what a nightmare that would be to match this up against the specs of the other smart phones).

What may also be fun, though almost certainly a terrible idea, would be the ability to view, but not acknowledge/reply to, deleted posts. Of course, I'm just generally nosy.

I will admit that you kids have loosened up quite a bit since the old days, but I think the specter of the iron fist may be hanging over the board.

I love the board, and I've been here since nearly the beginning (though I lurked for a bit before joining) and while I can understand Guru's want for the board in general to be a place he wants to read, on the DVDVR Board, for instance, I'm sure there are entire forums that Dean steers clear of all the time. It really does seem like CRZ reads *every* post on The-W, so do you really want to add more members that will just end up annoying you?

Maybe add a link to members' Twitter handles under their names, like you do for AIM handles & such? You've got a space in our profiles to add them, so why not add them in addition to AIM/ICQ/whatever?

I am with Aaron on this. I have been here since the start and it is still the only board I check on regularly. It's pretty congenial even though the Zims have gotten less severe in their board administration. I don't think much needs to change, but any small tweaks would be nice, just don't overhaul the whole thing.

Whoa, you made your wife a dude. I do not love that.

(I don't think making a superficial change can resolve a fundamental issue. This board's "dudeness" goes much, much deeper than the fact that the names look different.)

(Also, HELLO. The default theme is "Pffft!" - so you've only changed it for registered people.)

This may have been asked before. This is the biggest suggestion I have. How do y'all feel about either multiple tagging or creating some sort of tag hierarchy? If I view all threads tagged "NFL", I ideally should see all threads tagged NFL, NFC, AFC and ones tagged for each individual team. In a similar vein, any one-off thread started about a particular movie where you add an unclickable icon should be tagged "Movies".

Ideally, you'd just go to the "Football" and "Movies and TV" forums. Actually, some icons ARE linked to other icons; some are not. It's how I can have you click onto the "RAW Super Show" icon and get threads going all the way back to the 2002 RAW icon (which, of course, I retroactively applied long after the fact, since nothing was tagged back then).

I DO want to come up with a way to apply multiple tags to a single thread, though (so, for instance, you could tag BOTH teams if you're discussing a particular game, instead of just one) but I haven't worked out HOW I can make that happen in our existing environment.
