I too liked this show. Disclaimer: I neither paid full price for the show (having watched it at a restaurant), nor had to listen to the commentary, so both of those may have had something to do with my enjoyment level.

I thought there was enough good wrestling (Punk vs. Del Rio, Ziggler vs. Morrison, parts of the elimination match and tag match) and memorable moments (the Show elbowdrop, the Glam Slam from the top, The Fink) to go along with Rock's in-ring return to make it a thumbs-up.

Sure, there were issues, such as Ryder not getting a shot, WWE doing the bare minimum after the main event as far as physicality, and the feeling that few storylines were actually advanced. But I thought those were minor points in all when compared to the good on the show.

This show was better than I expected going in. That opener was very good, but I think the Divas match killed the momentum, even though it wasn’t too bad. I wonder why Dolph jobbed so quickly in the tag match after being booked so strong in the opener? Are they afraid the guy might get over??

Henry-Show was boring with a bad ending, but at least we got the Big Show Savage Elbow.

Punk winning was a cool moment, as was Fink doing the intro. Match was pretty good too.

The main event was weird. The crowd seemed to deflate after Rock tagged out to Cena. I guess they, like we, knew that the point of the match (and PPV) was Rock returning, and Awesome Truth had no chance of winning. We were all right.

Still, at least their were several memorial moments to make this seems like a legit Big Four PPV, which is something I can't say about Survivor Series the last few years.

I worry that we're gonna get a Nash/Hunter/Punk three-way for the belt. Punk owes Nash, and Nash/Hunter needs an upgrade to overshadow Show/Henry at the next PPV. Also, who else does Punk defend the belt against now? Del Rio, again?

Miz and Truth or a turned Cena if they were smart. The ADR/Punk match was worthy of a rematch. Nash/HHH will be its own thing when it happens. I don't feel bad for Cena for getting Rock to talk smack about him. Cena had that stupid ass grin since this all started and it took Rock poking at him to get it off. After 5 years of being the top draw, you would think Cena would learn how to bring some emotion to this feud. Its pretty sad when I have more confidence after tonight in the part via satellite guy in this feud to bring the goods than the I am here all the time even though you don't want me full timer.

A guy who probably but deceptively had one of the best nights of his career is The Miz. The Rock is his idol. Miz got to wrestle his idol in his idol's comeback match at Madison Square Garden on pay per view, helped his idol look great, and took the People's Elbow from him to put him over. He was probably overjoyed, though he can't admit it in public.

I thought it was a decent show too. I'm not getting some of the complaints we've had here. Is it really a problem that the Rock gets plenty of promo time? Granted, half of the stuff he says during his promos is usually complete gibberish, but IT DOESN'T MATTER -- Rocky's intensity and charisma is what makes him can't miss when he's got the mic. The general consensus is that we want all the Rock we can get when he's making an appearance with the E, right?

I do feel just a twinge of sympathy for John Cena. He gets tagged in to a chorus of "You can't wrestle" chants, immediately engages in a decent bit of chain wrestling with Miz that culminates in a solid dropkick. And yeah, I know Cena dropkicks are usually pretty ugly, but this one hit the mark. So how does the crowd respond?

"You still suck! You still suck! You still suck!"

Come on, MSG! Rise above hate!

Oh, and I am saddened by the loss of Sin Cara, if only because there will be less material for Botchamania episodes now.

I wonder if Kevin Nash thinks Howard Finkel should be in a main event feud for getting such a big nostalgia pop? ;)

I liked the show. Don't really understand the negativity here. I haven't watched Survivor Series in several years and I'm glad I watched this. I watched every match, and even Show/Henry wasn't too bad. It's not like those Andre/Studd matches were wrestling clinics. It was perfectly acceptable for a big man match. ME was not all that great, Rock looked good but really only worked for about 4 minutes, took almost no bumps, and hit his signatures, but I guess they wanted to play it safe. Rock is very close to heeling himself, and Cena finally showing signs of being tired of getting shit on by the audience is a hopeful sign. Ziggler, Phoenix, and Cody all stood out in good ways. Punk/ADR had a very good bout. The twitter stuff was annoying but honestly I expected worse. All in all, it felt big and had the best atomosphere in years (even MITB had that atmosphere for only one match).

They sold the show on Rock's return to the ring, I don't have a problem with them giving Rock a longish promo - at this stage of his career, that spot ought to be more of a payoff for plunking down for the PPV than something you toss out there on Raw to hype buys.

Again, with due respect to Cena for being a hard-working, dedicated student of the game and a great 'WWE style' brawler - a couple of neck drag takeovers, a crappy monkey flip, and a crappy dropkick isn't an answer to "YOU CAN'T WRESTLE". No more than that god-awful STF. How long has he had to make those moves look better? And as much as I do dislike the last four years of boring SUPERCena push, I think I dislike the way he constantly no-sells the fans' heat more.

Speaking of selling, Punk continues to entertain with the dying art of ring psychology. By selling the arm attacks Del Rio used to set up his cross-armbreaker finisher, Punk is (logically) unable to use the GTS with an arm he can't get above his shoulder. It's great, but it's just not what we've been programmed to expect from a WWE brand-carrying guy. (I dunno, maybe Orton? But his RKO comes out of nowhere after a beatdown by design, like DDP used to do it.)

I'm choosing to think that Fink was just waiting for Punk's music to hit before starting his introduction. And if you get a group of 20 or so to fly all the way in from the Far East, I guess the least you can do is drop a new WWE Champion right into their laps.

Ryder doesn't get his title shot at MSG, Bryan not cashing in MiTB, Rock and Cena not really falling into disarray during their match, that's three teases I counted where none were played on the show. I'd still go 'thumbs up' overall.

The pop on the Ryder run-in was insane. Insane. If they gave him ore than two minutes it would have been the largest pop of the night outside of the Rock.....which is probably why they only gave him two minutes. Still, they gave him a chance to go out there and enjoy the crowd, which better than what other wrestlers have had.

I'm actually really looking forward to the Henry vs Show blow off match which will involve them destroying each other at TLC.

Punk and Del Rio was very good, and I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch.

If I were a dastardly, cheating heel, it would be the first thing I ripped out of his mouth.

(Yes, I'm sure there are far more egregious errors in ring psychology but when your whole persona/character seems increasingly about being "insider" and referring to the most obscure minutiae of wrestling/pop culture, you either do it all correctly or not at all.)

EDIT: And gimme a break, bringing out The Fink just so you can have your own, "...and NEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWW...." in MSG-moment? I certainly hope the comment about this being WWE's christening of Punk as champion is accurate, because otherwise it just reeks of the guy being everything HHH accused him of being: Too much of a believer in his own hype and the biggest mark for himself.

HHH calling anyone else for being a mark for themselves is right up there with China saying they have a good human rights record. The dude almost killed Punk's push and it was pretty much Punk, ADR and the MSG crowd saving it last night. HHH is the biggest mark for himself, because he wrongly thinks people feuding with him will be enough to get over. Even though logic and the fans think he should win. Also hiring your broken down buddies to run things and be in story arcs they have no business being in is a pretty mark for yourself deal. That you think you know what is best while back patting your friends' wallets. HHH is the biggest fraud walking the earth.

Sorry, I am going to Raw and I was looking forward to it then got some news, so I am back to being negative Nancey. Hopefully the first hour will turn it around. Looking forward to getting a Punk promo.

I lump that in with his advocacy of ice cream bars and wearing the Randy Savage outfit in memoriam. He's a big rasslin fan who has the pull to play with all the rasslin toys. He's marking for wrestling and wrestling nostalgia more than anything.

He's doing what Eugene's gimmick should have been allowed to do -- offer a vehicle for wrestling fans with a memory.

I didn't see SurSer but didn't he also have Fink out there also as a counterpoint to Ricardo Rodriguez? If ADR gets his own personal announcer, Punk gets one (for one night only at MSG) too?

I expect we're getting

Punk vs. Del Rio - TLC match
Show vs. Henry - CHAIRS match
Ryder vs. Ziggler or Air Boom vs. Ziggler/Swagger - ladder match
whatever's going on with Cena and Awesome Truth
HHH vs. Nash
Orton vs. Barrett
any of those being the table match, but I'd think HHH and Nash would consider themselves more sophisticated than a table match.

Well, if you want to get beyond what's considered wrestling universe reality - of course my heel that pulls a gun beats your heel that grabs for the lip ring, heh.

I don't know how far you go back as a fan, I remember back to the days of Baron von Raschke and Dick the Bruiser. Your idea of "wrestling psychology" may be formed by watching the last 10 years of WWE for all I know. But it's the "main event, WWE style" kind of wrestling that I'm getting at.

I mean it's the same product now where John Cena can go up against a heel that might work on Cena's knee for the better part of ten, fifteen minutes - and Cena will sell during the attack - but then he'll pop right up when he turns the tide, and hoist the guy up on his shoulders for the AA. That's why I pointed out Punk going to the trouble to set up the GTS, but then 'not being able' to hit it due to arm damage. That bit of nuance helps put Del Rio over.

It's my contention that Punk gets penalized in WWE for being better at wrestling. It goes against "main event style" with the suits in the back, and he doesn't look as strong as Cena to some of the fans on the other side. (Obviously Punk is making it close to the top of the card regardless.)

I don't know if Punk was specifically instructed by WWE agents that "ring psychology is so 'indy'", but I think it's at least part of what started the whole worked-shoot angle in the first place. Certainly the WWE announcers are often produced to tell a story other than the one the wrestlers are trying to tell in the ring.

I'm thinking that fans haven't seen a lot of this in WWE over recent years. Rocky used to be known as the only main-eventer who didn't have much of a problem doing jobs, or selling to help put someone over. I'd say that back in WCW, you'd get good, old-school psychology much more often - not with the nWo guys, but the Horsemen and much of the midcard.. the guys who would go out and tear it up before the clubbering schmozz in the main event.

What was the chant the MSG fans were doing all night? I could never make out what they were saying. Didn't seem wrestling-related.

I was hoping that move would've gotten the pin.
Now -that- would've been insane

The Rock match was good. Some great wrestling (on purpose) by Rock. I mean, I don't recall him ever doing a magistral or fisherman suplex

Punk/Del Rio. Great story. Also credit to Del Rio in this. He is one of the guys that actually softens up the bodypart..

Henry/Show wasn't as interesting as last month's match. The elbow drop was not pretty but it was impressive.
I wonder where they'll go with Henry's injury.
The crowd chanting for Daniel Bryan was nice. I guess it's a good thing they had him get beat down on SD.

I enjoyed the JoMo/Ziggler match, as both guys obviously know how to put on an entertaining match. The Ryder moment was good for both the crowd and Ryder.

I was ready to kill the tv when Orton became the last man of his team. I feared the 'he just defeated 3 men' bullshit. I'm glad they 'outsmarted' him. THe right team won.
Sucks to be Sin Cara. My friends and I made the same Hunico joke that someone else made already (have him go backstage and put on the mask)
Several loud Cody chants btw. Not once but a few times. WTH?

Divas match wasn't all that good. It lacked...inspiration. The finisher was nice.

I would make Triple H vs. Nash the chairs match, except the chairs aren't weapons, they're just there for when Nash needs to sit down. BAHA. Nash.
