http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2011/11/07/penn-state-officials-head-to-court-amid-cover-up-allegations-sex-abuse-scandal/

The more details I read, the more I hate everyone involved at Penn State. I honestly had a ton of respect for Joe Pa even if he was just a figurehead the last few years. I have zero now. To have so many instances, with so many people knowing what was going on and not one of them taking real action? Disgusting.

And it starts with the GA. How do you not stop it right then and there? Or at the very least call the police that second? Going home then just talking to Joe Pa? And him simply pushing it down the line to the AD? Every one of these people was more worried about Penn State than these children. And every one of them should be fired.

I don't know how you can prove a negative*, but given that the former GA was given a spot on Paterno's staff after the 2002 season and is still on the staff as a WR coach, it seems like if you shouted "PAYOFF!" nobody would be telling you that was impossible.

*As in, how can a guy prove that he DIDN'T get the job because he was silent about things, even if that wasn't the case?

As a man who grew up in PSU country and nailed every day of my life, because I was an Irish fan and an outspoken one. Even I that hates Joe Pa, their sporting program their douchebag fans and the entire city that I used to work in that has insane traffic even if it isn't football season, doesn't want this to happen. Its a disgusting sad situation and I hope this finally proves to My PSU wife why we are not sending our unborn child to this school.

On a positive sign, it was surreal to see the TV station I interned with on ESPN. I am sure they wanted to be on there without this story.

This is the end of Paterno. They are going to have to flush everyone out, so you can't have him still there with new management. It is completely disgusting, and I'm not sure how Paterno going to the administration but not taking it upon himself to call the police puts him in the clear. Now, on the field bright side wise, this probably eliminates any chance of Paterno's son being his successor. And, yeah sounds like they bought the GA's silence with the receiver coach position.

As you can tell by the avatar, I've been following this closely, but have no desire or inclination to defend any of those involved. Anyone guilty? Goodbye. Guilty by association? Pack your bags. Beyond the football aspect, I'm a Penn State alum. This whole thing honestly sucks more from an alum perspective than a football perspective - tuition going towards the defense counsel of a group of people who are alleged to have done nothing in light of what was reported.

I've been waiting for the Joe Pa retirement announcement since 2004, chomping at the bit for it since 2009. In all likelihood, before this even broke, this was going to be his last season. He'll be 85 next month, he can't stand for an entire game on the sideline, and he's in fear of being in the way on the sidelines during games. It's just this feeling that Joe is so stubborn and proud that he'll finagle a one-year contract extension to steady the ship amid the turmoil or some BS nonsense like that - and he'll get it. Fail. For the good of the team/program but more importantly for the good of the University, he's got to go.

Joe is "in the clear" legally because he followed the chain of command. It's the interpretation of the mandated reporter law. The one guy, Shulz, to whom he reported, had authority over the University Police. So that technicality is possibly why they're lauding Joe - that and the fact he'll testify for the prosecution, not the defense. In terms of doing the right thing morally? It's still not known if he was more the Lance Corporal Dawson or Lt Col Markinson in this scenario.

It's nit-picky, but McQueary wasn't hired until 2004. That was following Fran Ganter's move from OC/Asst Head Coach to an administrative job, and the then-WRs coach leaving at the same time. That's when Joe's kid got bumped up to QBs coach, and McQueary came on staff. He was a GA 2000-2002, and had an administrative job in 2003. There have been a couple of GA's in the past who have gotten coaching jobs on Paterno's staffs - including Jerry Sandusky. That's not to say there couldn't be shenanigans with the timing of McQueary's hiring, but it's just clarifying the timeline.

The really insane part is that in like 2006 I think supposedly Sandusky attended a practice and brought a young boy with him. You have to imagine Joe was there, as was McQeary. Now maybe they didn't see him. That would be the only excuse I can think of. But it's just disgusting that they would allow that to happen knowing what they knew.

That it is: Paterno announces retirement at end of season (espn.go.com)

That article still speculates that the Trustees could still force Paterno out, but this seems like a case of jumping before you're pushed.

For conspiracy theorists out there, this was an interesting tidbit related to this story that I was previously unaware of.

Gricar went missing in April 2005. The murky circumstances surrounding his disappearance — an abandoned car, a laptop recovered months later in a river without a hard drive, his body was never found — have spawned Web sites, television programs and conspiracy theories.

And more weirdness...someone saw this coming in April, and it was Mark Madden of all people.

This is far from an outrageous hypothesis, especially given the convenient timeline.

Initially accused in 1998. Retires in 1999. Never coaches college football again. Sandusky was very successful at what he did. The architect of Linebacker U. Helped win national championships in 1982 and 1986. Recognized as college football's top assistant in 1986 and 1999.

Never any stories about Sandusky being pursued for a high-profile job. Never any rumors about him coming out of retirement.

But there's no shortage of stories and rumors about Penn State football sweeping problems under the rug, is there?

Why did college football let an accomplished coach like Sandusky walk away at 55? Why did he disappear into relative anonymity?

A grand jury, spurred by a complaint made by a 15-year-old boy in 2009, has been investigating Sandusky for 18 months. Witnesses include Paterno and Penn State athletic director Tim Curley. Interviewing Paterno about a subject like this had to have been one of the single most uncomfortable acts in the history of jurisprudence.

Plenty of questions remain yet unanswered. Potentially among them: What's more important, Penn State football or the welfare of a few kids?

You might not want to hear the answer.

I really hope they fire him before the weekend anyway. I realize he did a lot of good over the years, but since he can't legally be punished for his inaction here, at least they could take away the last few games from him. Don't even give fans that still support him a chance to say goodbye. Just go away.

There have been rumors about why Sandusky retired since before the ink was dry on his retirement papers. Supposedly, he was headed to be the head coach at UVA after leaving Penn State but Joe had that nixed. I think that's when Al Groh (former Nittany Lion) got the job. There have also been stories for as long as I can remember that Joe and sandusky *hated* each other well before '98 - to the point that at sandusky's retirement dinner, Joe made a cameo to say a few words that would've been as personal as Joe speaking at anyone here's retirement, got up, and walked out.

It's very possible the Board of Trustees fires Joe before the end of this season, but before this weekend? Nope. It's a home game, and sadly, the bottom dollar is still the bottom line here. Have you seen what tickets are going for on StubHub now? (I got mine last night at face value). This will be the best attended game Penn State's had all year - and after allegedly having a half-filled stadium 2 weeks ago during a freak snowstorm, the University and the town will take all it can get.

There has been a lot of speculation that Joe was going to retire at the end of the season anyway, well before the grand jury indictment came out. After he had a collision with a 150-lb WR this summer, he's been on pain meds and can't hang onto the sideline. We (as a PSU fanbase) have expected this to be the end of the road. But this way? Never. Never ever ever in our wildest imaginations. Because I'm a nit-picker, Joe's "crime" isn't one of inaction. If anything, it's of not enough action. He did the minimum of what the law required, and because he's the de facto face of Penn State, he's the lightning rod for the good and the bad.

You're going to see a very interesting stadium dynamic on Saturday. As far as I've seen, Joe's supporters are mostly the students. I'm an alum, and I'm headed to the game with a group of alums to see this team one last time this season in person. The Westboro church is reportedly protesting before the game. That combined with passionate, inebriated students is not going to be a good scene.

a) imagine if they had beaten Alabama. If they were top 2 or had a realistic chance of being so at the end of the decision, does Paterno get more leeway? Football isn't supposed to be the issue, but one of the reasons he's not on the same leave as the other officials is he's a coach and not a normal administrator.

b) before this happened, Paterno was mentioned as having little to do with what happens with Penn State on gameday - he sits up in a booth with no headset on. Maybe he tells someone with a headset what he wants said, but he's not steering the wheel. (He's said to still doing coaching during the week.) They wouldn't really miss him that much if he was home on Saturday.

If Joe "hated" Sandusky his (apparent) inaction in this case is even more puzzling.

Interesting question is if they somehow win out or at least win 2 out of 3 and then win the Big Ten title game and go to the Rose Bowl, do they keep Joe through the bowl buildup? Now, I saw them losing at least 2 out of 3 if not all 3 before this situation occurred, because the offense is horrendous. I can see him not going to the Outback Bowl if they lose out, but if it is ending his career in the Rose Bowl that would be an interesting situation if the story still stays hot for the next month.

The Penn State Board of Trustees has fired (pennlive.com) Paterno, and University President Graham Spanier. Tom Bradley, the defensive coordinator will take over as interim head coach.

Well, so much for that. As much as the almighty dollar means to college athletics there's a boiling point for negative media attention that trumps that and you see the results of that this evening.

I've often heard that PSU benefits from not having a major newspaper in its vicinity that allows the more seedy activities from ever reaching light in Happy Valley. Unfortunately, when something as bad as this comes to light, the snowball of negative NATIONAL media attention is impossible to navigate around. I saw JoePa's ouster coming a mile away and I can't think of many people that would see JoePa coaching the team this weekend as a viable alternative at all.

I think the 'no major newspaper' angle might've been understandable 20 years ago, but in this day and age, not so much. The BoT has been looking to unseat Joe for at least 7 years, and this was their opportunity. It just absolutely sickens me that the Court of Public Opinion gets to play judge, jury, and executioner. The media have lost sight of the fact that it wasn't Joe who was alleged to have sodomized a ten-year-old in a shower room. He did what the law required him to do - he did the minimum, and with hindsight, he should've done more. (Namely, told the grad assistant to go straight to the cops). But isn't it a sick commentary that the only person who is enjoying the luxury of "innocent until proven guilty" is the guy who's charged with 40 counts of abuse against children?

I honest to God *did* expect that the BoT would wait until after this weekend to fire Joe. Naive, maybe, but that's how I thought it would play out - especially considering it was, what, 5 days from the day the news broke until they actually issued a statement? I never expected he'd be fired at night via phone call. The only things that are more infuriating than the manner in which he was fired are (1) one of the guys actually charged with a crime (AD Tim Curley) remains on PAID administrative leave and will have paid legal counsel through the University; and (2) the graduate assistant who actually witnessed the crime and did NOTHING to stop it as it happened is still employed. They should all be gone at this point, from McQueary up to Spanier, because at the core of the matter that a breakdown in the 'chain of command' led to failure to stop a sick man.

I'm way too close to this situation, so it's both difficult and interesting to read 'outsider' perspectives. It's hard to process that the Attorney General, on Monday, said that Joe did the right thing legally, and a little over 48 hours later, he's gone.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I can't agree with the decision to fire Paterno now. All we know about his involvement in this whole sordid affair is that the GA saw the 2002 incident, reported it to Paterno, who immediately reported it to Curley (who had it in his job description to oversee the police and thus involve them), who dropped the ball and lied about it. As far as we know, there's no evidence Paterno knew about the 1998 incident, or anything that happened after Sandusky was barred from State College campus (because he just took his charity stuff to smaller satellite campuses, where Paterno had no purvey). We don't even know definitely the level of detail with which the GA described the 2002 incident to Paterno. And we haven't had an opportunity to hear Paterno's side of the story. (By all accounts, Paterno was ready to give it yesterday before the Penn State administration threw up the blue wall of silence.)

Four days is all it took for Paterno to be thrown out with the bathwater without any due process whatsoever. He didn't witness this event - hell, he didn't commit these horrible acts. I know we're all supposed to be thinking of the kids that had to go through the horrors of a deeply twisted man, but the way Penn State has handled this just strikes very false with me. It would have been one thing, even if entirely symbolic, to suspend him pending the results of the investigation, but firing him outright just makes it apparent to me that some of these trustees had it out for Paterno long before this got out publicly, and now have their excuse. (And for those who argue that Paterno shouldn't have been on the sidelines because of the circus atmosphere it would have created? It's going to be even more of a circus with him gone, if what's going on along Beaver Avenue right now is any indication.)

EDIT: And that's assuming the game even takes place now. I wouldn't be surprised to see it postponed given what's going on.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
