DC isn't the only big thing going on in comics.

Fear Itself ended this week with the the (yet again...) death of Thor. This was kinda spoiled two months ago, but they tried to swerve us with him not dying in issue #5 and holding it off for the last issue.

It was okay. Something I keep seeing with Marvel's big events is that they have a good first issue and a decent last issue, but nothing really happens in the rest of the series. All the meat and potatoes of the story is happening in other books. That's annoying. Look at Siege; nothing really happened in the Siege mini series, it all happened in the tie in books. Well, the same thing happened in Fear Itself, with all the story happening in other books. Why bother having that seven issue mini series when they could have just added those pages to Thor's regular series and Captain America's series and so on.

When will we, the buyers of these books, wise up and stop wasting all this money for something that is just bleeding the wallet. It'll all be in trades next month anyway.

The aftermath, that doesn't happen in the series, is that the Hulk boots Bruce Banner out of his body and splits the two of them (which is interesting...), Sin and Valkyrie will be globetrotting and trying to collect the enchanted hammers (iasn't this story stolen from the first G.I.Joe cartoon with Cobra and the Joes collecting the MASS Device pieces?), and there will be a new Sentry type character introduced who has something to do with Taskmaster, Paladin, and Deadpool (which I'll follow cause I like Paladin and Taskmaster.) ...basically, as with all of Marvels event books, this one just sets up the next one that'll start up in a few months and run through next summer.

It's an endless cycle. I am such a sucker for all this crap.

Fear Itself might more accurately describe Marvel editors worried about being fired this week.

Sounds horrible. Call me when they fire fat Joe Quesadilla. Didn't Thor die like 3 years ago?

Thor actually came back three years ago. 2007 was the year that the Broxton storyline kicked in and Thor made his proper return. So yeah, it feels hasty to kill him off again, especially considering the newfound exposure he's gotten with his movie.

I'd love to pan this entire thing, but...I'm an absolute sucker for The Defenders, so I'm very excited to see that series come back!

EDIT: Math fails me. 2007 was FOUR years ago.

Thor is already scheduled to be back by May with Thor #7 of the new series.

As for the Defenders, why have a book seemingly centered around the Hulk when he'll also be having his own book with Banner chasing after him?

Hulk seperated from Banner has already been done, and I've never found it a particularly interesting concept.

You also have to fire the Marvel CEO who makes Mr.Burns look thrifty. The company is making money, there is no need to fire people and treat the work place like its third world company. I always envisioned working at Marvel to be close to heaven as you can get. After reading the firing article on www.comicsalliance.com, it sounds like the worst job you can have.

Killing Thor is as stupid as throwing Bruce Wayne in time when Dark Knight. I have no idea why the big two think when the movies come out, they should kill the character. It makes no sense.

I thought the story was alright; I mean, I liked most of it, and it definitely had some real high points (like Cap getting Thor's hammer, which really should have had more time devoted to it, as it was clearly something that they were building towards), but I just felt like the ending was too rushed. We really didn't spend any time at all with the Avengers and their magic weapons, and the Worthy got all of their screen time in other books. I really, really hated what they did with Cap's shield; I've talked about my love for that particular item before, and they got a lot of stuff wrong in this book. The shield shouldn't have been able to be broken, if it was, it shouldn't have been able to be put back together without the use of magic, and Uru is actually less durable than Cap's shield, so adding it wouldn't have made the shield stronger. In fact, it's impossible to make the shield stronger, it's supposed to be completely indestructible. The scratch on it was just the icing on the cake; a permanent reminder that no, Cap's unbreakable shield is totally breakable.

Fear Itself is shaping up to be the biggest flop event I can think of. Fraction is a decent writer (he’s an Architect), but this thing was just all over the place, and I just didn’t care. So, they just killed Bucky? Wonder what Brubaker thinks of that? Now Thor is dead, again. Really, right as his DVD comes out?? Fear itself is everything that I hate about modern comics in one package. Thank God there are plenty of other good books out there, even from Marvel

I know the whole thing started as a collaboration between Fraction and Brubaker, but then turned into a big event that Fraction was helming. I think it was something Brubaker was going to do in the Cap comic, but it wound up fitting in here.

#6 left me hyped, with Cap stand all by himself ready to stop the bad guys, and I was ready to see what type of awesome weaponry the Avengers would get.
Tony spent 2 issues in that forge (ditto in the Iron man tie-ins) and we barely got to see what was made.

The fights were cut short it felt. Lots of potential but in the end it was just...short.
I did mark out when Cap reached for Mjolnir, but again that too was over in two panels.

I guess a lot of stuff will be covered in the 7.1 issues.
But as so often, this felt rushed and thus not really satisfying.

There were some good Fear Itself tie-ins, like Avengers Academy and Journey Into Mystery.

DC is actually more guilty of the opposite, they bring everyone back. Still waiting on Jor El and Thomas and Martha Wayne to come back...

I'd say bringing back Barry = bringing back Bucky.

It seems that that Thomas/Martha Wayne, Jor-El and maybe even Uncle Ben have all been brought back, although not permanently, in the last 15 years.

To be fair, it is realistic that people will die as a result of these epic battles. It's the inevitable resurrection that lessens the impact of the deaths. Although, if Bucky is truly dead, this might stick.

I agree that "Fear Itself" felt rather pointless. Bucky's death felt like a cheap move by marketing so that they could relaunch the Captain America ongoing with Steve Rogers, just in time to coincide with the movie.

Maybe I'm just being crazy, but considering what was going on in Cap (Bucky in Russia) up until FI, the death just felt really rushed.

Also, it feels like FI interrupted the nice Ultron story Bendis had started building to/orchestrating since Avengers #1.

Well, he did say if he's truly dead. Which as it turns out is not the case. I was pissed when they 'killed' him but if it was to get to this, I'm all for it.

And Jerichoholic you're right. Apparently Brubaker wanted to have it happen in the Gulag story until they decided to use it as a ploy for Fear Itself.
Rogers would've returned to being Cap anyways, but it would've been in his own book first.
