The FIGHT CLUB 2-disc set will no longer be available after August 27, 2002. Fox has announced that several of its special edition DVDs will be "downgraded" to more consumer-friendly single-disc editions with fewer special features, and FIGHT CLUB is on the list.

If you know anyone who wants it, or you don't have it, better get it quick, as FIGHT CLUB is easily one of the best 2-disc sets on the market.

That's just dopey. I mean, the movie has like 4 commentaries on it. It's so classic.

BTW, David Fincher is directing MI:3.

Oboy. Methinks this move may lead to the end of the "Special Edition" DVD paradigm entirely.

"Consumer-friendly single disc editions?" In otehr words "we don't feel like forking out time and money to do a special edition DVD worth a damn, so enjoy cheapo singe-disc editions with the trailer on it . . . if we feel like it."

I would say it is more a clever move of getting more people to buy it.
Like Disney always did with their classics 'for limited time only'
Right now the special editions aren't special anymore..

Hmph. Well, if these "consumer friendly" DVDs cost half the price of the Special Editions (i.e. the same as VHS) then fair enough, but what's the betting they stay at the current prices so we pay more for less?

Some films that are older stand alone quite well as just the film with minor extras (like the Lethal Weapon series) but some films really benefit from the extras as they enhance the whole experience.

I really, really hope that this isn't the end of Special Edition DVDs. Apparently though (according to recent editions of Empure magazines) the production costs of these Special Editions are becoming prohibitive and many top actors are demanding more fees to take part (with the studios arguing such activities fall into their stipulated promotional duties), maybe it's all finally come to a head and the studios have decided to stop all the extras or at least cut them back a bit.

This is a damn shame if it is the end.

Calm down, guys. It's not the end of the special edition DVD. Fox is simply taking some of their OLDER titles that have been around for awhile (FIGHT CLUB is almost three years old) and have become very expensive to produce in two-disc format and trimmed them down to a bare-bones edition in both wide and fullscreen. This way Joe-Bob country can get "jest the durn movie that fills muh screen up with no black bars" at Wal-Mart and they can make the most money possible.

The average DVD owner now is no longer a film buff. DVD is widespread and the majority populace now doesn't even "get" the benefits of widescreen viewing, nor do they have the patience or the understanding to sit through a feature-length commentary ("If they're talkin' how can I hear the dang ol' movie?") This is why Warner, for example, produces all their films in two editions now -- wide and fullscreen for the deepest market penetration.

It's not right and I don't like it, but that' s the way it is.

They're still producing two disc special editions -- X-Men is next to get that treatment, for example. As long as Lucasfilm keeps putting out sets like Episode I that totally raise the bar on content, I don't think we have anything to worry about.

Special Edition DVDs aren't going anywhere. Just this fall alone, DVDs of "LOTR: The Fellowship Of The Ring", "Beauty And The Beast", "Monsters Inc." and "Attack Of The Clones" are coming out and they're *all* said to be bigger than anything that's currently on the market.

(In October, they're putting out a really big two disc set of LOTR - and then a HUGE four disc version in December that will feature NONE of the footage from the first DVD. That's incredible.)

It's August and November, actually. The Two-disc set

is the theatrical cut with some behind-the scenes documentaries and the like and a look at the making of The Two Towers. It's due out August 6.

The Four Disc set is the "special edition" with deleted scenes added into the film for an extended cut -- stuff like Galadriel giving the Fellowship their respective gifts (cloak brooches to everyone and The Bow of the Galadriem and the White Arrows of Lothlorien to Legolas, for example). The deleted scenes will not be on the two-disc set and none of the content from the two-disc set will be on the four disc set.

They're also releasing, in November, a FIVE DISC "Collector's Edition"

that includes the aforementioned four-disc set, plus a disc with a National Geographic documentary on the filming, along with two Sideshow/WETA bookends (The Pillars of the Kings) and a set of limited edition CCG game cards.

The latter two sets will be out November 12.

I don't want to seem like a whiner but stuff like this really ticks me off. Why does a movie need 3 edition except to milk the fanbase for as much money as possible?

I will probably buy just the 4 disk set and be happy.

Edit: Sorry for the small rant.

To milk the fanbase and provide cheaper versions to people who want to just own a copy of the movie to watch over and over again. In theory. If'n I had my way, and shit made sense, they'd release a single disc version (unless it was long enough to need 2) of a movie that has... just the movie (with subtitles and shit) with no extras at the same (or close to) price as a VHS tape, and a special edition that has cool extras and an extra disc of cool extras for more money. But that'd cost more to due cause then they'd have to make two streams of discs for many movies, and shit.

I dunno. I feel like I do my part to keep the damn "Specil Edition" craze alive just by trying to fill the gaps in my "007 Edition" DVDs, which are great but DAMN hard to find.

Maybe MGM did the same thing and forgot to tell anyone. Or they're gonna roll them out again when the new Bond comes out in the fall.

Anyways, I think it's natural that anyone who likes DVD is gonna want the definitive version of the movie, and not a trimmed version. But the sad fact is this is starting to become more expensive to do (I think part of the threatened SAG strike had to do with DVD royalty issues) and studios will either pony up or trim down what they offer.

I'm betting on "trim"

hey, most VHS's that come out new have a SRP of $104.95

so gimme a $25 DVD anyday, and let the masses rent their VHS's until the price comes down to Sellthrough

the average consumer doesn't buy VHS tapes untill they're priced at the sellthrough level (yeah, I know about how they cost 100 bucks or so at first, had the price of VHS vs. price of DVD conversation with the dude who owns a rental place a few times). Most people (the average consumer) doesn't really give a shit about extra features on a DVD, they just want to watch the bloomin' movie.

right, so let them buy the full screen, bare bones DVD's and I'll snap up the animorphic widescreen w/ the bells and whistles.

I had one stupid woman complain that:
"oh, i can't see the movie, the black bars make the screen small."
"Ma'am [which is retail for bitch], the bars are there so you can see the whole movie"
"but it don't use the whole tv, mine's only a 13 inch"
"You have 2 choices, you can rent the VHS, and use the whole TV, and lose almost 1/2 the movie, or buy a bigger TV for your DVD player..."

*sigh*

i just tell all my customers that DVD's are made for people who want to see the whole movie, and to stick with VHS if they don't care for the "Black Bars"

i remember reading somewhere that some studio was going to make Widescreen DVD-18 flippers and keep the full frame DVD-9's barebones...

1 version for movie buffs, the other for the sheep.

Anyone who claims full screen is better should be forced to watch the comparison on the extras disc on the Die Hard special edition (apologies if this is a region 2 only thing I'm talking about) where you see a 4:3 version of a scene and then the same scene in widescreen. There's no way you can argue after seeing the comparison like that, as even to the most stuck in their ways types it's obvious that you're missing half the action.

Rikidozan, maybe you could demo it to your customers? It's worked so far on everyone I've tried it on anyway...

I've made this argument to a couple people I'm very close to and they JUST DO NOT CARE. Seriously. Cinematography, the directors' vision, getting the full scope of action and all the other benefits of widescreen mean NOTHING to them. They're more worried about being entertained and getting a full picture on their television screen while they watch Legally Blonde or whatever. "Forcing" them to watch a comparison isn't going to change a thing for most "fullscreen advocates." I speak from experience.

It's frustrating as hell, but there's no changing people's minds on this subject. You're either a widescreen person or you're a fullscreen person.

BTW, most early DVDs were flippers with widescreen on one side and fullscreen on the other.

What are those people going to do when they start buying HDTVs in a few years and suddenly, things they are used to watching now have black bars on the sides.
