A first in 2012, and a conditional first in 2013 for a QB hasn't been on the field in ten months and appeared to have already fallen off a cliff.

The 2013 pick is a first rounder only if the Raiders win a playoff game this year. If the Raiders pull that off, this trade looks less crazy. Still a bit crazy.

I don't think this deal gets done from the Cinny side with anything less, or with any other coach involved. Ownership had been adamant about not trading Palmer while he's on this retirement/holdout bit and it was apparently only the personal relationship they had with Oakland coach Hue Jackson that made this happened. Two high draft picks for a guy the Bengals were going to let walk away is an astounding gift.

Edit: The Raiders have already traded their
2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks for 2012, so their first pick next year would be in the 5th round. They traded their 7th round pick last week.

When is Palmer even going to be in game shape? I'm in the Palmer was never really that good camp, maybe the silver and back will change that. No way I take that kind of gamble to find out.

Palmer absolutely was really that good, as his peak in 2005-06 made him seem like he was going to be the Bengals' QB for the next 10 years. By my count, only him and Culpepper in the last ten years have had such a precipitious drop from near-top tier to actively bad that wasn't due to age.

That peak ended when he injured his elbow, and then refused to have Tommy John surgery in 2008. Since then, he's topped out at serviceable at times. I have no reason to think that Jason Campbell isn't better than him; I know Campbell's hurt now, but you can't make this trade just to keep alive hopes of winning the division.

They are going to get compensatory picks for Nnamdi Asomugha and Robert Gallery, probably third-round level, so they won't be completely empty, but it's still a bad, bad situation for a team that still needs to improve.

This deal is insane. If I was the Raiders, I tell Palmer's agent to get him to report to camp in the hopes that Cincinnati cuts him. Is Oakland even running the same system terminology-wise as Cincinnati? This looks like a disaster waiting to happen to me, and everyone involved is lucky Al Davis isn't around to fire them after it goes bad.

I am happy with this trade. They have young receivers who can learn from Carson. This must also be pointed out...we were going to have to rely on KYLE BOLLER! Palmer was the best chance of a bad bunch and I don't mind losing picks to get him.

This is the year for the Raiders to get to the playoffs, with a good defense and a great runner. The Chargers have never been more vulnerable, and the other two teams are terrible. They have rolled the dice and I see it working out.

Little did Palmer's agent know the Raiders were only interested in his collarbone. They kept Al Davis alive about 20 years longer than otherwise humanly possible, so they could perform this sort of transplant while rolling out of bed in the morning.

Good God isn't there a Geoff George type out there who would be better suited for this? What's Jake Plummer up to these days?

It was David Garrard until he suddenly realized he needed surgery.

As a long time Raider fan, I have experienced many of the highs and lows that come with following this team. I have to say, the last couple of years have been interesting to say the least. This week has been no exception.

Time will tell whether this was Mike Brown's finest hour, or if Hue Jackson is smarter than what people are giving him credit for.

Regardless, I have to say, I have not been this excited to watch a Raider's game since the 2003 Super Bowl. Just the entire circus atmosphere surrounding this trade and whether or not Carson Palmer can still compete will have me glued to the t.v. for at least the 1st half.

It's amazing that he is going to start this weekend. I don't care if this was Tom Brady that took the layoff then changed teams I would think he would at least be watching from the sidelines this week and then start after next weeks bye. What happens if he is totally rusty and terrible? It's tough to win back the support.

I also wonder what teams are thinking when it comes to a backup QB. Are there really not 64 quality guys out there? They knew Boller was the backup and were fine with it, but now that they need him it's not cool?

I kind of wish they brought back Jeff George. The man got blackballed way too soon.

I'm not even sure there's 32 quality guys out there. (This is where I'd bring up the Redskins, but I don't know how much of that is bad judgement on their part.)

Then again, it's not like you need a good QB if other parts of the team are strong enough. Trent Dilfer, well, Dilfered his way to a Super Bowl ring, and the Niners aren't exactly winning their games with Alex Smith's arm. Campbell was, by all measures, improving beyond replacement level, but we'll see if the retirement layoff helped Palmer find his fastball.

By constant expansion or expansion talk. Which is why I don't even want to go to four teams. It won't end any controversy, just lead to future expansion talk which leads to future expansion talk, etc.
