Both a prequel to and a remake of John Carpenter's The Thing, which was itself a remake of a previous The Thing, about an alien monster that can replicate itself. I sort of liked it. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the best thing about The Thing.
I saw the original when it came out in theaters nearly 30 years ago and went and saw this one today.
The original "The Thing" had excellent characters and by halfway in the movie, you knew all of them, and they each had their own personality. Windows, MacReady, Childs, Blair, Palmer, etc
This movie had none of that character interaction, the movie focused too many on computer animation, thus wasn't nearly as good as the original. It also didn't leave you in suspense during the movie of "who is who".
It only did 8.5 million at the box office over the weekend. But what people forget, is the 1982 The Thing was also a box office flop. But unlike the 1982 movie, this one won't have a cult following.
Looks interesting enough. I'll watch it alone for Jon Glaser, whom I thought was awesome in the tragically short-lived "Stroker and Hoop". Hopefully, he'll be even funnier in live-action form.
