If the Big East and Big 12 leftovers merge, I would not be shocked to see Notre Dame at least finally consider joining a conference with the ACC having a good shot. Then they can just fill in the last spot with UConn or hell anyone else and you're good.

If the basketball schools split off in the Big East, Notre Dame will just stick with them and a couple of A-10 teams that join with them.
Thought the whole purpose of the current divisions in the ACC was so Florida State and Miami would be in line to face each other in conference title games?
Vandy has to be the luckiest school of all. If they were in a conference getting decimated, they'd be the first place left on the side of the road.

If Notre Dame would join a conference, it would be the Big Ten. Two of their rivals are there and they history with each school in last ten years. It would also be easy on the travel since most of them are nearby. They would still play USC and maybe one of the military academies. I still say after its all said and done, ND football stays independent. That TV money is just too good. The rest of their teams would stay in the Big East/Big 12. It wouldn't make sense to join for a basketball team to join a conference that has Duke, UNC, Pitt and UConn. Rather be a superstar in hell than a servant in heaven.

I was just trying to group all the schools by geography.

RE: Big East. They really need to just go back and being a Basketball conference. All the football members need to really take this "merger" with the Big 12 seriously and try to get bids into their conference.

Here is what the new Big 12 could look like if Texas and Oklahoma bolt for the new Pac-14:

WEST (old Big 12, 7 schools):
Baylor
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri
Oklahoma State
Texas Tech

EAST (old Big East, 5 schools):
WVU
Louisville
USF
Cincinnati
TCU

Move Iowa State or Missouri to the East and it'll be 6/6. If Texas Tech and Oklahoma State leave too to make a Pac-16, then it'll be just a straight up 10 team conference again. They could try to grab SMU and Houston to make it 12 teams again.

The Texas and Oklahoma schools are either coming to the Pac-whatever as groups or not at all. They aren't splitting up, so it is either 14 teams with both OU and OkSt or 16 adding the Texas schools.

Here is the big question. As of right how we have 6 conferences with BCS auto bids: ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big 10, Pac-12, SEC.

In the next year or two, we will have: ACC (14 or 16), Big 12 (10 or 12), Big 10 (12), Pac-14 or 16, and SEC (13+) 5 Conferences (63 or more schools in those 5 conferences)for 8 spots. Does one other conference, like a merged MAC-CUSA, get an auto bid, or do they make it 3 at-large spots?

I have to agree. Look at the old WAC in the 90s. They had a 4 quadrant 16 team conference. It was so bloated that the travel costs were too much for some schools that 8 of them broke off to start the Mountain West. I hope this doesn't start a pattern of merging and splintering every 8-12 years or so.

I'm willing to bet that the auto bid conferences make way more money than the WAC made. Not saying it's guaranteed to work, but the money might cover up for increased travel costs.

I think they're sticking with the same amount of autobids, or at least the other conferences are maneuvering for that vacated spot. CUSA & MWC are willing to pick up displaced teams and merge conferences (or maybe just having a Super Bowl-like title game between the winner of each conference) if that would then earn them an automatic BCS birth. This might also mean TCU does not go to the Big East after all, if they can play teams closer to home and not have to qualify for an at large bid.

Though word is they'll stick to it, I'm still hoping Pitt and Syracuse can get out of that 27 month wait to move. Makes no sense to keep them around that long anyway. If we're going to do this total realignment thing, let's get it over with as quickly as possible.

Honestly, they could just leave the auto-bids as-is and I would be fine with it. At this point, the only loser (bowl-wise) in this scenario is the Fiesta, and if I'm them I say "hey, it's cool that we lost our automatic bid-conference (the Big XII), so we will just stay with two at-larges and call it good." They already were getting stuck with UConns and Pitts in their game, anyway. Just take the highest seed not one of the Big Four conference champs and have that be the Fiesta's anchor team for that season. There wouldn't be anything wrong with a bowl line-up like:

BCS National Title Game: #1 vs. #2
Rose Bowl: Big Ten (or 12 or however many) champ vs. Pac-12/14/16 champ
Orange: ACC champ vs. at-large
Sugar: SEC champ vs. at-large
Fiesta: at-large vs. at-large

Heck, some years the SEC runner-up vs. the ACC or Big Ten runner-up would be a better game than any of the others.

The Pac-12 signed a 12-year television contract with Fox and ESPN worth an estimated $3 billion last year that will take into effect in 2012.

With 12 teams, it's a quarter billion per school over the contract, 16 teams - you cut the pie into $62.5 million less per school. Plus Texas won't share it's private network deal, which is pretty much why A&M was looking elsewhere, right?

Looks like Missouri is heading to the SEC to make 14.

The Big East schools, save UConn, pledge to stay together

With the "Big 12 four" not leaving, here is how the Big 12 and Big East look now:

Big 12 (9):
Baylor
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Texas
Texas Tech

Big East (6):
Cincinnati
Louisville
Rutgers
TCU
USF
WVU

Now if the Big 12 wants 12 schools again, the usual suspects keep on cropping up: Houston, BYU, SMU.

Just to stay a FBS conference, doesn't the Big East need two more schools? Does this put some pressure on Notre Dame? I really think that the Big East needs to put their foot down and get a bylaw passed that mandates that if the conference offers a sport, to remain in the conference a school has to be a member of the conference in that sport or drop the sport (unless they are not a member of the division, like in the FCS, not the FBS)

Suggesting that the Big East put pressure on Notre Dame to join the football conference is like suggesting that WWE put pressure on The Rock to wrestle a full schedule again. It's never going to happen, so they can either take what they can get or say goodbye.

You also have to realize the Big East has a bunch of schools that don't have football like Georgetown and Nova. So, to force ND into a league where most of their members don't have football is ridiculous. I saw Mike Wilbon on PTI say ND was scared of the Big Ten even though ND put the boots to Michigan State and Michigan needed another miracle to beat them. And didn't Miami who is in the ACC cream Ohio State last week? The only team that scares me in the Big Ten is Nebraska and they just got there. Well maybe Wisconsin. Yet, FSU is as almost as scary as those teams as well as Virginia Tech, so I don't see that argument holding water.

Notre Dame as well as other schools have to realize, moving to the ACC is a death sentence for your basketball program. Unless, you have a top 10 b-ball program, you are going to get swallowed up by Duke, UNC, Pitt and Syracuse.

Notre Dame is already in the Big East for all other sports. Having non-football schools in the Big East means nothing to them. What they care about is their TV deal with NBC that they probably wouldn't get to keep if the football team joined a conference.

Any illusions that *basketball* has ANY sort of impact into these school's thought processes regarding realignment should've gone away when Pitt and Syracuse left the Big East. For better and worse, this is ALL about football.

The amount of money football takes in is huge compared to Basketball. Football is the driver and often allows minor sports to continue. Some basketball programs do quite well but they are the minority. Many lose money. While march Madness is a big deal it pales in comparison to Football bowl games, etc. around New Years.

I wouldn't go that far. I will watch, but don't care that much for, bowl games Dec 15-30th. Unless a team I like is in one. But I'll watch 15 hours of basketball a day the first weekend of March Maddness. If a bowl game ends in an upset, good for them. If the first round game ends in an upset, it changes everything. What gives smaller school more insperation? TCU, and Bosie in BCS or VCU, Butler in Final 4?

Im a WVU fan. I'm just going to sit back and see what happens. If WVU wins Saturday vs LSU, it might change everything. I'm surprized the SEC didn't wait til after that before they gave out the bid. But your record in the last 10 years doesn't matter to your TV market. And why would BYU go independant, get its own TV deal, and jump back into a conference so quickly? Two years ago I had a plan of realignment that would end up with 10 12 team conferences, and the WAC would of dissolved. I might get that on youtube someday.

ESPN/AP say ECU is applying to the Big East (espn.go.com). As an alum, I like this. I'd actually prefer they go ACC to give their games with UNC and NC State added oomph.

The article also says the Big East wants the service academies.

I don't disagree on a personal level but in terms of overall revenue (especially TV) and fan interest, college football wins. Partly because there are fewer games and they mean more and in large part the gambling aspect of the whole season. I love the NCAA tournament and most bowl games are boring and drag out over too long a period of time but I am not a gambler.
