Syracuse, Pittsburgh moving to ACC (usatoday.com)

Now, there's a bunch of stuff to still work out, the biggest of which is that the Big East requires 27 months notice for a departing member. The exit fee is a trifle, a mere $5 million, but the dominoes are falling again. New hot rumor is UConn and Rutgers to follow, moving the ACC to the magic 16, West Virginia hoping and praying they get a SEC invite, and the Big East being the big loser, to the point where I really think they drop football, and go back to the basketball-only roots.

Pitt brings a bit to the table for football, and 'Cuse brings...history, though they're on a bit of an uptick lately. Syracuse, Pitt, UNC, and Duke (and maybe UConn), makes a KILLER basketball league though.

Hopefully the ACC goes to geographic North/South divisions for football and drops the Atlantic/Coastal-zipper format. I honestly don't think I could correctly place the current ACC teams in their correct divisions.

The rumored ACC tournament at MSG is the huge coup. Its going to be crazy good for the basketball teams and probably a lot harder for some of the mid level teams in the ACC to get into the tourney now. I wonder if those schools like Maryland, NC State and others realize that when they are getting programs like Pitt and Syracuse or just see the dollar signs.

My go at it:
Whatever they name the conferences, (north/south, atlantic/coastal) this setup works.

ATLANTIC or NORTH
Boston College
Maryland
Pitt
Syracuse
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

COASTAL or SOUTH
Clemson
Duke
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Miami
North Carolina
North Carolina State

While I can see the logic behind that arrangement, if I were Wake Forest I would be apoplectic at the prospect of being in a different division from all three of the other NC schools.

The problem with the new 14 team ACC is that there are only 7 schools north of the VA/NC line. I looked at a map and Wake was furthest out from the other 3 NC schools that were clustered together.

I have no doubts that the current division arrangement will be kept and one new school will just be inserted into each division. IF UConn joins and we can get Navy or WVU to come over too to make it 16, then it would be a 8/8 arrangement in terms of the VA/NC North/South line. Wake could go back south and the 2 new northern schools would even it out.

I heard general mentions of trying to get a piece of the NYC television market but I hadn't heard this rumor specifically. I would love this for two reasons: 1) I live in Manhattan; and 2) I'm sick of the ACC tournament being in Dook's backyard 95% of the time. What a joke of a neutral site.

In addition to the schools already mentioned in this thread, I've also heard rumors of Texas, Texas Tech, Notre Dame, and Kansas. The Texas thing is probably less likely than ever because there's no chance to bring in four "western" teams to make a western pod, which is what I heard Texas was being promised before. But boy, think about a basketball conference with Texas, Kansas, Dook, UNC, Syracuse, and Pitt!

We could potentially be hearing some more conference stuff go down today with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and/or Texas Tech. I'm intrigued.

I was talking to a friend a mine about this and I brought the fact that what makes college football special is the rivalries. Pitt will no longer have the Backyard Brawl with WVU, so who is their big game that the fans excited about for football? Its not going to be Duke or North Carolina. FSU views Miami as their rivals and vice verse. Virginia Tech maybe after that who is left Maryland, Georgia Tech or try to keep the Syracuse and UConn thing going if they get in? I just can't see the amount of tickets being sold for those games as they sell with West Virgina. And maybe that is the problem with the Super Conference is sure we may get a playoff, again may, but it seems to be taking the fun out of college football.

Notre Dame to the ACC would be a giant win for them, but a loss for ND. Giving up Michigan, Michigan State, the military academies and plus USC would cause heads to explode. They are also going to play Oklahoma then Texas in the future along with Miami. It would be a giant drop off financially to play Wake, Georgia Tech and NC State once a year when you can fill that will teams from other conferences. Its sorta like Nebraska going to the Big Ten, they would be dominate to start and then feel around for years for the big ticket game now that they don't have Texas or Oklahoma. My friend who is a PSU fan brought up how Penn State is still looking for that school after losing Pitt to go to the Big Ten after all these years and forcing Nebraska to be it is going to feel wrong.

Pitt used to have a big game with Penn State. Things change, and you develop new rivalries. Plus there will still be room for non-conference games on the schedule. They can still do Pitt-WVU the same way they still do Florida-Florida State.

The question is who is Penn State's rival? Michigan State? I would say MSU views Michigan as their rival. Maybe Iowa after the beatings they take from them. Its not as clearly defined as it was with Pitt.

Yes but it could have been, had Joe Pa not been such a baby about playing Pitt. Pitt wanted to keep the rivalry game, just like FSU/Florida do as an OOC. Joe Pa said no time and time again. Penn State doesn't have a rival because they didn't want one.

First, you don't have to have just one rival. FSU's "rival" is Florida, but they have the game with Miami that people look at as a rivalry game too. Thus Miami/Pitt could also be a rivalry type game potentially(didn't they have some bad blood from the Big East days?).

Second, there are plenty of teams in this new conference that aren't a part of a rivarly anyone cares about right now anyway. It's not like Pitt/WVU was getting anyone outside of those two schools excited lately. Who's BC's rival? Who's Syracuses's rival? I have no idea.

It just takes a close, meaningful game to get things going. Someone feels they get screwed and it lasts for years. I wouldn't worry at all about it.

As wmtastic points out, we could've still had the Pitt rivalry if not for the stubborn guy who used to wear coke bottle glasses. But the ironic part is, Joe was all whiny about Pitt because Paterno wanted to punish Pitt for not supporting his idea for an all-sports Eastern Conference (kinda like what we're headed towards now). Pitt also balked at the idea of us trying to take a 2 home/1 away advantage in the series, but rejecting Joe's all-Eastern sports league was the big nail in that rivalry game's coffin - for another 5 years.

As far as a rival, they really really tried to get Michigan State to be our rivals, and even gave us the uber-hideous Land Grant trophy to play for. Now that Nebraska's in the Big Ten, they want to keep reminding us that the rest of the Big Ten didn't even throw votes our way in '94 and made PSU-Nebraska a rivalry game. Neither matters, though, because our true rival is ourselves these days - and we still don't like Pitt.

These new conferences will find a financially-beneficial way to incorporate both old and new rivalries. I wouldn't be surprised to see the season extended by a few games - and potentially ring the death knell for the BCS bowl system.

I forget where I read it, but I think it was on the NCAA site as I was poking around their by-laws YEARS ago. I vaguely remember reading that the football season can not last more than 20 weeks. So, the only way to extend the season is to play during that 3 week break after Thanksgiving.

Nah, I don't see either happening. We'll move to 16 team conferences, just as we've had other major conference shake-ups in the past, and things will move forward pretty much as they are now. Probably the Big East has to fight to keep it's auto bid with some other mid major conferences, but other than that, no big deal.

And within a decade, teams will start bitching the conferences are too big/too hard to win, so they'll splinter off back to 10-12 team conferences. That's my guess.

If they go 16 team conferences and keep the BCS, the 2 team maximum rule will get thrown out the window.

I don't think it will be because they are "too hard to win", but rather that the travel costs with these huge conferences (and I'm specifically thinking of a Pac-16 that goes from Austin to Seattle) will make them less profitable than they should be, especially in the non-revenue sports.

I already hate the idea of a Pac-16 using "pod scheduling" for football. If you are going to go through that, just have four four-team divisions and have them play-off for a Pac-16 champ already.

4 div "pod" system idea:

Pod 1:
Boston College
Rutgers
Syracuse
UConn

Pod 2:
Maryland
Pitt
Virginia
Virginia Tech

Pod 3:
Duke
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Wake Forest

Pod 4:
Clemson
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Miami

EDIT: Rutgers and UConn are the 2 most likely to seek bids, so says ESPN.com, so I changed this to reflect this.

Depending on the sanctions Miami gets, it seems like Pod 4 is way too stacked with good teams.

I'd say if you get two more Big East schools, which I'm not sure will actually happen, just split it up as ex-Big East in one division and ACC in the other.

If the Big East and Big 12 leftovers merge, I would not be shocked to see Notre Dame at least finally consider joining a conference with the ACC having a good shot. Then they can just fill in the last spot with UConn or hell anyone else and you're good.
