So The Lion King was the #1 movie at the box office this weekend, and last week it was announced that Ghostbusters will be coming back out in October.
Rereleasing movies was commonplace until home video came around. I did not see Star Wars or Empire in their original theatrical runs because I was too young, but caught them both in rerelease before Jedi came out. Disney movies used this a lot too with pretty much putting everything into a rotation every summer.
The trend faded in the 80's and has been all but absent in major markets over the last 20 years.
I think it is a good idea. Theaters want to offer something that can't be experienced at home, thus the flood of 3D. But audiences are burnt out on the 3D gimmick and rereleases could be something new. You get the experience of seeing classics on a big screen, with a crowd. I for one, would pay to see Raiders of the Lost Ark in a theater as I've only seen it on VHS/DVD.
I really enjoyed seeing the original Star Wars trilogies on the big screen again when they re-released them before Episode I came out. I also liked seeing the first two Toy Story movies on the big screen again.
Everything is pretty much a remake anyway, so why not.
I think Jurassic Park with the IMAX 3D treatment would be pretty cool.

The majority of people around the world would argue that you did not see the original Star Wars trilogy during that re-release.
On topic: The 3D conversion Disney used made Lion King even better. The first time, and probably last time, I will ever admit this about any movie. It was well worth the extra money.

So the 3D looked good? I always heard converted movies didn't look that great. Guess it might be easier to pull off with animation.
I am going to see Superman in an old style theater on Saturday. The wife, my friend and maybe me may get to see the 1931 Frankenstein in a medical auditorium. There had better be more theaters for Ghostbusters then they did with Back to the Future, that was bullshit. Yes, if he saw the special edition you saw the trilogy, its like saying you didn't see Godfather if you saw the extended version in a theater.
The Wee Baby Sheamus.
Twitter: @realjoecarfley its a bit more toned down there. A bit.
That reminds me of possibly my favorite moment, Hurley talking about how nothing bad ever happens to him. Glad to see the mirror universe paying off for him.
