Ok, first thing right off the bat, this is a one-time only thing for me. Considering how much fun we were having talking about the trainwreck potential of Sting/Flair in 2011, I had to catch this one (since no one else in the world is). So I might as well take a look at what I've been missing from the company I've so desperately been hoping could be a viable #2. So let's dive in.

Let's start off with a video package recapping the end of the BFG series, culminating with Bobby Roode beating Bully Ray. We get some audio cuts of Roode talking about how he worked his whole life to get to this point. I'm still stunned that they're taking Bobby Roode (a tag wrestler a week ago) and shooting him into a main event slot, but if they idea is to sell (HA!) Bound For Glory on Hogan/Sting (oh, sweet Jesus), then they might as well take a chance, right? This then segues into Kurt Angle retaining the TNA title over Sting, thanks to Hogan-ference.

We start the show off proper with Ric Flair. Are we starting off with the big match right away? Flair starts off with the mic. Oh, if anyone thinks I'm wasting my time transcribing promos for THIS show, they've got another thing coming. Flair calls out Sting, so let's hit Sting's music. Out comes Heath Ledger Sting to a decent pop. Flair says he wants back in the limelight and he promised Hulk Hogan he'd beat Sting and Sting will get to Hogan over Flair's dead body. So Sting says he's going to kill Flair. Sting makes about five generic threats in a minute. What have I gotten myself into? Sting wants the match now...but out comes security? Wait, so we AREN'T getting the match now? Hit Sting's music? What the hell is going on? I guess the match is later.

Let's go backstage to...oh God, it's Jeff Hardy. Yes, trot out Jeff Hardy a week after he was sentenced to jail time and a day after his brother got arrested for the umpteenth time. Genius. THIS is WCW TNA!

Ad break

We come back with Jeff Hardy backstage. He says he's happy to be back and he took the first step forward last week in Huntsville. Jeff wants to address the boys in the locker room, for everyone's sake, including his own.

MEXICAN AMERICA v. TARA, MISS TESSMACHER, DEVON & "THE POPE" D'ANGELO DINERO
We take a look at stills from the PPV, where Sarita helped Mexican America retain the tag titles. Remember when I said a year ago that Pope Dinero was an absolute can't-miss and even these idiots couldn't screw this up? Yeah, they screwed it up. Shows what I know. Also shows how little I've been following the current product, because I can't even remember when Pope turned babyface again. The faces stop on the way to the ring to greet Devon's sons. Are they still around? It feels like they've been plot devices forever. Tessmacher and Tara share a kiss on the apron, because...why not? Lesbian kisses for everybody!

We start with Devon and Hernandez, as Devon gets the side headlock. Shoulderblock ends in a stalemate, as Hernandez talks trash. Devon hits the flying shoulderblock to knock Hernandez down. Devon mouths off to the heel corner, allowing Hernandez to waffle him from behind and tag out. Anarquia runs into a hiptoss and Devon tags Pope. Pope hits atomic drops and a bulldog. Pope goes wild with elbows and an axehandle for two. Pope gets caught in the heel corner, as the ref is distracted. Tag is made to Hernandez, as we get the double-team corner splashes for 2. Pope comes back with a running forearm and tags are made on both sides. Devon's a house of fire and hits the neckbreaker for 2. We have a Pier 4 between the men. Devon hits the uranage, as Pope hits the ten corner punches. The Mexican broads try to jump in, leading to the women chasing each other around the ring. The Mexican broads then try and hit on Devon's sons. That distracts the faces, but they're still able to take Hernandez and Anarquia down. The Mexican broads try to jump Pope and Devon AGAIN (that's three or four times now) and get tossed down. The face chicks spear the Mexican broads, as we've lost all control here. The men end up on the outside, as Tessmacher hits the rana and Tara hits a Sky-Hi powerbomb for the simultaneous pin. No, neither of them were legal, why do you ask?

WINNERS: "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero, Devon, Tara & Miss Tessmacher - Bad match, but at least it was energetic.

Backstage, Karen Jarrett admires her image. Traci Brooks enters the picture. Karen yells at her and runs her down. Karen demands Traci cover up and I'm rapidly losing patience for this segment. Karen wants the Knockouts in five minutes. Aw crap, am I getting another segment with her?

Ad break

We come back to Karen Jarrett with the Knockouts and...yeah, this is painful. I'm suddenly pining for the subtle heel overtones of Vickie Guerrero. The point of this segment is that Mickie James has been denied her rematch, just because. We're also getting three Knockouts matches to determine the next challenger.

In the ring, we're joined by Fortune. AJ Styles formally introduces Bobby Roode. Roode comes out to a pretty nice pop. Styles congratulates Roode for winning at the PPV and puts him over big time. Styles tells Roode that he's earned the right to face Kurt Angle at BFG and that he'll win the title. Next on the Bobby Roode love train is Christopher Daniels, who tells Roode to keep his eyes on the prize and that he can beat Kurt, as long he believes in himself. Daniels takes some good-natured potshots at Styles, in a funny bit. Kazarian goes next, talking about how Fortune has built this company as a family, before telling Roode that he deserves the world title more than anybody in the company. Finally, it's James Storm, who talks about how they made Beer Money work, back when TNA didn't know what to do with either of them. Storm wishes it was him, but he'll be rooting for Roode at BFG before finishing with the catchphrase.

Kurt Angle comes out for rebuttal. WHAT is UP with his EYES? Those contacts look creepy! Those...are contacts, right? Anyway, Kurt grabs the mic and congratulates Roode for his win, before making fun of Fortune for their comradery spiel. Kurt tries to sow some jealousy among the group, asking the other Fortune guys if they aren't jealous of Roode's title shot. After getting that out of the way, Kurt decides to book Roode in some matches. Kurt apparently has booking power, because...shut up, he does. Kurt books Roode to face each Fortune member, one per week, with Roode's title shot on the line every week. It starts with Kazarian tonight. Hit Kurt's music, as we close up on the conflicted Kaz and Roode.

You know, setting aside the silly plot point of Kurt having booking power...this was a pretty good segment. Bobby Roode was just a tag wrestler a week ago, but TNA are going out of their way to portray Roode as a guy that deserves to hang in the main event. And the idea of Roode being pitted against Fortune members with his title shot on the line each time is going to make for some compelling TV. It puts friends against each other and as much as guys like Kaz and Storm don't want to face their friend, they may never get an opportunity like this again. It's a great storyline. Having said that, MAN, does this ever render the BFG tournament completely moot and pointless. Gotta love that they've spent months on a worthless tournament, when it could just as easily end up being AJ Styles with the title shot.

Backstage, Eric Bischoff congratulates Kurt on his booking skills. Now why couldn't Bischoff have just booked the matches himself? It would have easily saved themselves a huge plothole, but what do I know?

ANGELINA LOVE (w/WINTER) v. VELVET SKY
Sky takes her sweet time shaking her ass, so Love gets sick of waiting and ambushes her mid-ass shake. Love works over Sky slowly, but telegraphs a backdrop and Sky hits a bulldog. That takes us to our next ad break.

Ok, I normally don't comment on ad breaks in the middle of a match, but...there's an ad for Direct Auto Insurance featuring several TNA wrestlers shilling auto insurance. And it ends with...you betcha...KURT "DWI" ANGLE talking about how much you can save on auto insurance! I'm honestly in stitches over how laughably stupid this is! SOMEBODY thought this ad was still worth airing, despite the lead spokesman getting popped for drunk driving! I know I've used this line already, but it's too good to pass up here. THIS is WCW TNA!

We come back with Love hitting the chinlock. Sky breaks it, but gets tripped up by Winter. Love hammers away on Sky and chokes away on the ropes. Winter chokes Sky some more with Earl Hebner distracted. Back to the chinlock. Sky tries to whip Love into Winter, but Love stops herself. This distraction allows Sky to make the babyface comeback. Love gets a thumb to the eye and holds Sky for Winter. Winter tries for the belt shot IN FULL VIEW OF THE REFEREE, but hits Love and Sky finishes with the Beauty-T DDT for the pin.

WINNER: Velvet Sky - About as bad as you'd expect.

Let's go backstage to Jeff Hardy, who approaches AJ Styles. Styles tells him not to bother and COMPLETELY runs down Jeff, telling him how Jeff almost fucked everything up for the company, because Jeff's a selfish dickwad. Jeff walks away, dejected. Ok, I have to ask...what's the POINT of this segment? Nothing Styles said is untrue, so who are we sympathizing with here? I don't get this.

Ad break

Backstage, Hulk Hogan arrives and Ric Flair meets him. Flair assures Hogan that he'll beat Sting, but Hogan says he has a Plan B. He wants to share it with Flair and with Sting, who happens to be right behind them. WHAAAAA? Hogan shoos away that pesky rascal Sting, before sharing his plan with Flair. Yup.

Your hosts are Mike Tenay and Taz. They talk with Crimson via satellite. They talk about Samoa Joe taking Crimson out out of action. Crimson promises bad things for Samoa Joe. He says he'll be back in two weeks.

SAMOA JOE v. "THE BLUEPRINT" MATT MORGAN: SUBMISSION MATCH
We go back to two weeks, where Samoa Joe played some roshambo with Matt Morgan. Joe clearly won that game.

Joe attacks Morgan from behind to start. Morgan takes control with chops and rights. Corner back elbows hit. Morgan hits the Umage buttsplash. Huh...that wasn't the guy in this match I was expecting to use that move. Morgan continues working over Joe in the corner, but Joe takes control with the jawbreaker and the log-rolling legsweep. Time to hit the choke, but Morgan rushes to the ropes. Morgan tries to make the comeback, but Joe takes him down with an elbow. Joe starts working over the ankle. Joe wants the choke again, but Morgan reaches the ropes. Morgan makes the comeback with rights and the discus clothesline. Side slam hits. Joe wants a belly-to-belly, but Morgan hits the bell-ringer and the Michinoku Driver. Morgan tries for the armbar, but Joe makes the ropes. Morgan calls for the Carbon Footprint, but misses. Morgan grabs the goozle, but Joe pulls the ref in for the distraction. Joe takes advantage and hits a kneebuster and finishes with the figure-four for the submission.

WINNER: Samoa Joe - Short big man match. They have a long way to go if they're going to make Joe look any kind of credible again...assuming that plan's even on the table.

Ad break

Backstage, Kurt Angle busts in Kazarian's locker room and tries to talk him up for tonight's match.

Elsewhere, Devon runs down Jeff Hardy. Again, what is the point of these segments? It's just a bunch of guys yelling at Jeff Hardy. Is the idea that we're supposed to feel sorry for him? Because they're WAY off base if that's the plan.

Ad break - More fun with Direct Auto Insurance

KAZARIAN v. BOBBY ROODE
We get the handshake to start off. Wrestling (matters!) sequence starts us off, leading to a stalemate. Light "Bobby" chant starts us off, so this effort to get him over is starting to work a bit. Kaz flips over a hammerlock attempt and tries to follow with a springboard legrop, but misses. Roode gets whipped into the corner, but dodges a corner charge. Kaz dodges a corner charge himself. Kaz tries for a tornado DDT, but Roode turns it into a Northern Lights for 2. Back to the lock-up, as Kaz backs Roode into the corner. No clean break here, as Kaz takes the cheap shot. Roode doesn't like this dirty play, so he takes control and clotheslines Kaz over the top. Roode tries to help Kaz up, but Kaz shoves him and Kaz gets aggresive. He hits Roode with a slingshot legdrop for 2. Gutwrench suplex gets 2. We hit the chinlock. Roode gets whipped into the corner, but Roode no-sells it and makes the babyface comeback. Second-rope swinging neckbreaker gets 2. Kaz looks for...the Canadian Destroyer? We don't find out, because Roode counters with a sunset flip and rolls through into the crossface for the submission!

WINNER: Bobby Roode - Another short match, but these two gelled pretty well.

Post-match, we see Kurt Angle in the back and he looks unhappy about the result. At the very least, Kurt's doing his damndest to sell Roode as a major threat, so good for him. In the ring, Kaz shakes Roode's hand and tell him he's ready.

Coming up next...hoo boy...

Ad break - BFG promo

Backstage, Kaz tells Bobby Roode that he just wrestled the future world champion. Both guys talk each other up in a really nice segment. This is a really nice contrast to the cutthroat atmosphere we always get with the E.

Earlier today, Austin Aries talks about what an awesome champion he is. He wants you to call your friends, because he's making his first X Championship title defense next week.

Next week, Austin Aries makes his first title defense. Plus, Robert Roode takes on the next Fortune member: Christopher Daniels. Plus, Mickie James faces Miss Tessmacher. And Bully Ray teams with Jerry Lynn to face Mr. Anderson and Rob Van Dam.

That leads into a backstage promo from Lynn and Ray. Lynn says that it was obvious that he was getting Van Dam DQ'd on purpose and that Van Dam was an idiot for not realizing it. That's a good point. Ray promises bad things for Mr. Anderson.

Well...here we go...

"NATURE BOY" RIC FLAIR v. STING
We start with Sting shoving Flair away off a lock-up. Sting hits a shoulderblock. Stalling. Flair wrings the arm, but Stings forces him into the corner. Sting grabs the hammerlock, but Flair counters with a drop toehold. Sting counters that into a hammerlock, before Flair grabs the bottom rope. Both men "shove" each other lightly...and I mean lightly. Doesn't stop Flair from selling a light tap and falling to the mat. Good lord. Let's go to an ad break.

We come back with Sting working over Flair in the corner. Sting's corner charge eats elbow. Flair goes up top and gets tossed off, as per usual. Sting clothesline Flair over the top, as you can tell Flair struggles with that spot. Sting gives chase, but Flair catches him coming in and whips Sting into the guardrail. Sting no-sells it and clotheslines Flair. Back in the ring, Sting pounds on Flair in the corner. This has been a lot of punchy-kicky stuff so far. Sting argues with Earl Hebner, so Flair hits the Greco-Roman nutshot...in PLAIN VIEW! No DQ. Tenay tries to claim that Hebner didn't see it, but it was so obvious that he did. Good grief! Flair slowwwwwwwwwly goes back on offense. Flair starts chopping, but Sting no-sells again. I think Sting's no-sold about half of Flair's offense tonight...what little of it he's actually had. Sting hits the ten corner punches. Stinger Splash misses. Flair gathers himself before hitting the chop block. Flair gets the figure-four. I remember when this used to feel like a tense moment, but now it just feels like a resthold with these two guys. Sting takes a moment to rest before effortlessly reversing the hold. Flair continues to work the leg and continues his super slo-mo offense. Sting gets bored with this and decides to stop selling Flair's chops. Flair gets a thumb to the eyes and goes up top again. This time, Flair gets caught with a superplex! My God, that could break a hip! That brings out Immortal. Sting starts cleaning house. Hebner STILL isn't calling for the bell! Why not? Bully Ray swoops in with a chain. Mr. Anderson's music hits and he runs off Bully Ray with a chair. Hebner's just STANDING THERE! Is this a No DQ match or something? Hogan passes Flair brass knuckles. Flair hits the POWER OF THE PUNCH~! and takes his sweet time in covering. Sting lazily gets a shoulder up at 2. Flair goes back to chops and you would think he'd know that Sting's not selling those tonight. Stinger Splash hits and the Scorpion Deathlock will mercifully put an end to this.

WINNER: Sting - Oh...my...God. This felt like a parody of their older matches. Flair just can't go anymore. He's struggling with basic spots now. This was just incredibly sad. Sting had some spark in him, but he didn't exactly have to do much. And WOW was this overbooked like hell. Overall, just awful, awful stuff.

Post-match, we get a brief staredown between Sting and Hogan to end the show.

FINAL THOUGHT

Yes, TNA is going to charge you MONEY to watch Sting/Hulk Hogan in 2011. That says it all.

On the upside, they're building up the Bobby Roode title chase beautifully. They might actually have something intriguing on their hands here.

And hey, at least the commentary's better here than it is on SmackDown.

Until next time! No...I think I'll stick to Fridays.

Flair Vs Sting wasn't as horrendous as I expected it to be, but it was rather terrible and to have them facing off in 2011 is embarrassing. Hogan Vs Sting in 1997 was fucking horrible and really started the downfall of the WCW due to the fast count that wasn't and their match at fall brawl back in 1999 when Sting turned heel for the first time was even worse. That match is gonna be so sad and the ppv is gonna be in Philly, so the fans probably will shit on the match. I did like the rest of the show though. The booking of Bobby Roode was really, really good. This was as strong as a TNA original this strong as he was made to look like a big star. I liked the fortune promo as everyone played their parts well and I really liked Daniels' heel promo where he really put himself over for beating Styles and getting under A.J's skin. Angle did a good job in the segment with Fortune as well as his backstage segment with Kaz and how he sold that he was impressed by Roode and sold that he was worried after Roode beat Kazarian. Roode Vs Kazarian was a very strong match and did get 6-7 minutes which is more time than more television matches get.I also liked their backstage segment afger the match too. I thought Morgan-Joe was a good big man match, but the feud is marred by 50-50 booking as Morgan won at the ppv clean and now Joe went over, so neither guy is getting ahead. The tag division is as dead as it ever been with Mexican America as the tag champs and a thrown together team of Pope and Devon and The British Invasion who's never on Impact.I liked that they even advertised matches for next week which they never do. All in all, besides for the awful main event not a bad show and for once they showed they were willing to get behind a new guy at the time. I am fearful that the whole Roode push will lead just lead to a swerve with Storm turning on him. I am looking forward to the Fortune-Roode matches and I like that Daniels is turning heel because he's a great heel and I'm looking forward to another Styles-Daniels match at BFG.I'm hoping Roode wins the title at BFG and gets a six month title reign as I've always felt he's got what it takes to be a top guy. I do gotta disagree that Roode's been just a tag title guy at least not the last few months as they were telling a good story of his journey in the BFG series. It started with him as a guy that was injured and couldn't win because of that and then he got hot the last month or so, and finished in the top four.

As far as the Hardy stuff I guess it's supposed to garner him sympathy, but besides for the hardcore Hardy fans few have that for him after he's blown so many chances.

Dare I say that TNA might be going all-in on Bobby Roode? I echo the sentiment that the company should just make Roode (or Storm, or anyone who isn't a 40-something WWE or WCW retread) world champion for six months and let them carry the ball. What does TNA have to lose at this point? Roode getting screwed by Storm and them starting a feud would be just about the worst thing ever.

Years and years ago, Roode was getting that big push. He had a Terry Taylor robe, the Wall Street gimmick, and he was courted y classic wrestling managers like Heenan. Then they went Savage and gave him Ms. Brooks. I thought he had the goods back then, and I'm fine with seeing someone other than Anderson, Angle and Sting in the title picture.

But I'd really like to see Bubba Ray wear the belt.

Sting/Hogan in 1997 at least had the potential to be halfway decent, but the brilliant booking minds of WCW decided to make it a curb-stomping in the wrong direction.

Sting/Hogan in 2011, I shudder to imagine.

There are some website-exclusive post-match interviews up with Hogan, Sting, Kazarian, and Roode.

1. That is, unquestionably, the worst promo I've ever heard from Hulk Hogan in the 22 years I've been listening to him. I don't even know how to describe it; it was like he was doing a parody of himself. That saddens me.

2. Sting's promo wasn't any better. I don't get The Joker-stuff; it's 2011 and he's doing his version of "The Dark Knight" starring Adam Wee...er, West.

3. In another thread some time ago, I proposed the Tom Zenk/Tom Brandi philosophy of employment at WWE: At this point in the company, it's not necessarily about X wrestler is better than Y bodybuilder guy. It's about Y bodybuilder guy fills a role for the company's current that X wrestler just doesn't at the moment. In "Beyond The Mat," Vince said the WWE "makes movies," and he is correct in a way. I'm not going to hire Tom Hardy for a role I think is better suited for Brad Pitt. Further, that overall, if you're in WWE or under contract in some way, it's because they see something in you or know of a place you could fit; anyone who is associated with that company now is there because they are, in whatever way, the best the industry has to offer or have some parts of the complete package.

That said, no wonder Impact!'s younger guys aren't in WWE--their promos are absolutely atrocious. These guys spend a majority of their time bumming around indy locker rooms and it shows. Sure, they have great wrestling skills, but they don't know how to carry themselves as if they were larger than life. They don't know how to talk to me, sitting on my butt at home, to convince me of anything; rather, they talk as if they are in front of the 150 people who packed the local armory. There's no...oomph.

Well, The Crow came out in 1994 and Sting started dressing up as The Crow in 1997. The Dark Knight came out in 2008 and Sting is now Heath Ledger's Joker in 2011. So he's right on his own schedule. He waits three years and then adopts the gimmick.

Look for Sinestro Sting in 2014.

Flair saddens me. Can't the guy reach out to Vince and get a job with the company in the office or as an agent? I know he needs money, but I think Vince would take care of him. It is not fun watching one of your all time favorites wrestle when you fear for his life.

The booking of Roode vs. Fortune leading up to BfG is brilliant. It should lead to some good matches as well as some solid wins over established guys to get Bobby more over as a top talent. He's come along way since the previously mentioned solo push a few years ago. I am not sure what the plan was before Angle's recent issues, but they MUST past the torch at BfG.

Flair HAD with the WWE after his retirement though. It was Flair who decided to leave the company because he wanted to pursue other opportunities.

From reading the spoilers, it appears they had to shoot that opening Sting-Flair segment a couple times. Apparently the first one mentioned WCW and Flair running up to New York ... wonder if that was it, or if there was emotion missing somehow.

I can't fathom why Mexican America are feuding with Devon and the Pope while British Invasion are losing on Xplosion. It's sad because, at one point, the TNA Tag Division was actually pretty good.

Not only was Flair vs. Sting quite overwhelming but, according to Pwtorch.com, Flair also had a bit of a health scare after the match too. If that's not a sign that you need to hang it up, I don't know what is.

(There's a spoiler about TNA on the same page that had the information about Flair, so I don't want to link to it based on the spoiler rules but I will if someone says it's ok. I couldn't find a version without the spoiler included. :/)

The single most incredible thing about Flair vs. Sting is that at no point was Flair busted wide open. I don't know how he managed that. Usually a gentle breeze will open up Flair's forehead.

Either that or Red Skull Sting.

I realize it is pointless to even try to put logic with TNA's actions, but I can't see how anyone involved thinks it is a good idea to have Hogan wrestle a PPV, much less a main event. The man can barely walk, much less wrestle. Add to that he's wrestling Sting, who has not had a good match since he wrestled Joe two years ago.

Flair Vs Sting in 2011, yeah it is stupid, but it wasn't a PPV, I can MAYBE get that.

The last time Sting was interesting was when he was hanging out in the rafters for a year and not wrestling. Then the big blowoff match at Starcade happened and everyone realized two minutes in that Sting wasn't that interesting.

The last time Sting garnered any interest was when people thought he was going to be steam rolled by the Undertaker at WrestleMania, but once again the hype would outdo the actual event.

Hogan has only been interesting when he's worked for Vince and your mileage on that may vary.

If there was ever a last match for TNA to have before the whole thing crumbled and was never heard from again it might as well be Sting vs Hogan.

TNA got a 1.20 rating from last week's 1.02. As terrible as it sounds and is, Flair/Sting did its job. Its the only wrestling rating increase so far this week.

Imagine if they spent as much time advertising and pushing good matches with guys in their prime like they did the Flair-Sting match maybe they'd get this kind of rating or even better every damn week.

Well you're forgetting that last week was against an NFL game, so this was actually back to normal, down a bit from 1.22 of the August 25th episode (against non-NFL competition).

There was also going against a highly rated SEC game, so not the NFL opener, but I would say it held its own pretty well. Not that I am happy about it, but I like what they are doing with Bobby, I just hope its not all for not.
