http://espn.go.com/espn/commentary/story/_/id/6874169/terrelle-pryor-suspension-nfl-ncaa-merger

I have no love for OSU but this is bullshit. He suspends Pryor for 5 games for stuff he did in college, but Pete Carroll got to start coaching in the NFL from day 1 after all the violations USC got caught doing?

Also, Ben Rapistberger, who was a current NFL player at the time he allegedly committed a felony got a 4 game suspension.

I believe Jack Tunney was a better comissioner of a sports organization than Goodell.

On one hand, Pryor shouldn't be able to escape his actions simply by turning pro. And admitting to more violations that could potentially cripple OSU for years to come, just so he can turn pro is a real dick move.

On the other hand, no way should Pryor be doing more time than Roethlisberger. That's just wrong.

Option A: Due to Pryor's actions and the understandable response by Ohio State, Pryor should not be eligible for the supplemental draft.

Option B: As what Pryor did is not worse than plenty of past examples and Ohio State's actions were subsequent to the eligibility date, Pryor should be eligible for the supplemental draft.

Option C: Act as if Pryor's actions were unacceptable (in attempting to be eligible when the NFL believes he shouldn't be), and have this result in a suspension that just so happens to be the exact same length as that imposed by the NCAA.

Option C, eh? Really? Really. Fine, sure, whatever.

Seriously, either he's eligible or not eligible. And if he's not eligible, you can't say "he's kind of eligible".

Also, some sort of moral equivalence with Pete Carroll.

Goodell is just a bad commissioner. He didn't dick slap the Patriots when they were cheating. He hammered Ben when the police didn't even charge him. The DUI people get 1 or 2 games even if they fight it and win in court. He is more worried about the older players using the shit out of the NFL that he turns the game into touch football. In a giant coincidence Plexico can play the moment he is freed from jail. Vick is told to go to Philly even though he had no chance of starting and if Kolb doesn't get destroyed against the Packers, he is still sitting on the bench while he could have been starting in Buffalo or Cincy. Now, he magically realizes that there should be consequences if people fuck up in the NCAA.

He is one of those guys who wants to get his cake, eat it and then fuck the hooker who popped out of it. He could have said No to Pryor which any reasonable person would understand including the judge if Pryor sued. No, he wants to have the Pryor name which is more controversial then anything else, but as Eric, I helped bankrupt a multi-million dollar company after I created it, Bischoff said, "Controversy creates cash." What he is really doing is praying someone picks this kid up and they sell a few thousand Pryor jerseys from a bunch of retarded fans then dump the kid back into the street. This is just cruel. Pryor is not that good. In college, he is great, but college and the NFL are two different things.

It is no shock to me that the players don't respect him. It wouldn't shock me if most of the coaches and owners don't respect him either. The players are right, he has too much power and it has lead to some of the most insane decisions I have ever seen. There needs to be an appeals court for fines and suspensions. They are not doing Pryor any favors here and are banking on fan money to at least make it seem like a profitable move which at the end of the day is all he cares about.

The NFL will never publicly admit this, but since 99.9% of the current players came from the NCAA ranks, the NCAA is the de facto minor league system for the league. They are now treating it as such.

Yeah, they're calling it a violation of the draft rules but if it comes down to Pryor sitting out 5 games or the whole season (because IIRC he was still NCAA eligible after his 5 game suspension there until he got an agent), he should just take his 5 games and shut up.

Two things make me happy that he is sitting out 5 games:
1) Because he did jump to avoid any loss in playing time. We all know this. The NFL said "Not so fast my friend" and made him sit it out anyway. We all know this.
2)His lawyer said "Terrelle is going to the NFL because the NCAA mandated that he feed their families, but he could not feed his own." Really? REALLY? How does trading things for a discount tat "feed his own [family]?" How did he fill the bellies of his family with ink on his skin?

I think this is the 100% true motivation behind Goddell's rationale: to keep guys from fleeing to the NFL to escape NCAA punishment. And it's not like Pryor is going to actually *play* like a player at any other position would, so I think this is the perfect guy to set the precedent with.

It had been 37 years since the NFL revoked a first-round draft-pick from an NFL team when Goddell docked the Patriots first-round choice. Plus he fined the team $250k and Belichick personally $500k - the maximum allowed by the league rules. Just because the Patriots have been to good to be affected by the punishments doesn't mean they weren't substantial.

Yes he did. In related news, getthefuckoveritalready.

Weren't you the guy who was telling us this time last year that his behaviour was so bad that he'd worn out his welcome in Pittsburgh? He wound up missing about as many games as you would for a first-time steroid violation. It was hardly a hammering, especially if you don't view stripping a team of a first-rounder and landing a six figure fine on them to be a punishment of any consequence.

Either you're seeing conspiracies where none exist, or you have a curious understanding of the word 'coincidence'. Possibly both.

Also, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but whoever told you vowels were interchangeable lied to you. Sorry dude.

Radical interpretation of the text.

Vick said he met with a bunch of people, including Goodell, and was convinced Philly was his best option. Also, your insinuation that he was coerced into going to one of the better run franchises in the league instead of Cincinnati (a team with a less than stellar recent record of players with legal difficulties) or Buffalo (a team with a less than stellar recent record of anything) is....uniquely you.

?

??

???!!?

So in your mind he sends Vick, one of the most marketable players in NFL history, to some form of purgatory in Philly where but for a bizarre confluence of events he would be nothing but 2nd or 3rd string QB. But then he punishes Pryor either too hard or not hard enough because this will somehow make him more known and marketable to retards?

And does the non-punishment of Plaxico fit into this grand conspiracy of yours or did he just slip under the radar by changing his name to Plexico?

Either way, based on a random sample of one retarded NFL fan I have concluded you are not falling for his cunning plan so it's all been for nothing.

See, here's a guy who gets it. Authority figures REALLY don't like people who try to circumvent rules or avoid punishment in any way shape or form, hence the rather hefty slap on the wrist.

You do realize you agreed with half of what I said, right? Its up to me to get over what I want to get over, not you. Ben got hammered. We had a player attack a cop and get 2 games. Ben was not even charged, so how is that "fair"? I am not a big fan of Ben and I wish we did get Colt McCoy who has a big upside for the future. Ben is great for the present and for a few more years due his O-line as well his maddening yet amazing ability to hold to the ball for what seems like endless hours.

The grand plan is to make money, duh. You send Vick to Philly, because it is has fans that are sick enough to buy his jersey. Plaxico is out now to sell jerseys. The Pryor decision is to sell jerseys. You are the under impression that Goodell cares about these people, he doesn't. Its all about getting the cash from fans, creating buzz and putting the spotlight on his company. That is his job, everything else is PR bullshit.

No I did not.

You implied the Pats got off lightly. They didn't. You said Ben got hammered, he didn't. He got a pretty average length suspension. You said Goodell told Vick to go to Philly. He didn't. You then put forward a bunch of poorly articulated, ill thought through conspiratorial nonsense.

You were wrong. Repeatedly. I don't agree with people who are wrong. Like, ever.

Vick sells jerseys anywhere Vick wins football games. Also, as a general rule, starting players sell shitloads more jerseys than backups. Also also, Goodell didn't tell Vick to go to Philly.

See it is about making money, just not in the way you think. Suspending Pryor doesn't sell jerseys. Suspending Ben doesn't sell jerseys. Players playing football sell more jerseys than players sitting at home. A number of things have to be balanced when handing out suspensions. What's fair in light of advantage gained from rule breaking, what's fair in relation to previous punishments and most importantly, what impact the punishment will have on public perceptions of the league. *That's* where the money comes in. But if you think we'll ever see a commissioner who cares only about what's morally right and doesn't give a damn about public perceptions then you're mad. And by definition such a commissioner would not be wanted by the public anyway.

Well. It was a six-game suspension and he wasn't even charged with a crime. It was reduced to four for "good behavior" but it was essentially a four-game suspension for providing alcohol to minors and seeming gross.

Also Donte Stallworth killed that guy so he should probably be the go-to example of the one who breaks the paradigm.

OK, when it was that other poster doing it, I just chalked it up to him being a moron that never spells anything correctly. But now, here it is again: "Teabow." Is spelling this guy's name really so difficult, or is it some sort of lame dig on the guy, or something else entirely...?

The guy has garnered as many football-related headlines as anyone in the past five years, surely it can't be any harder to spell than any other surname.

Goddell the Disciplinarian strikes me as being kinda like a puppy. He's just going to push people with stiffer and stiffer penalties for lesser and lesser "infractions" until someone whacks him on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper. I'd love to see where in the CBA it says that he's allowed to punish people before they're in the league for actions that had nothing to do with the NFL.
