Plenty of actors are in movies where they play basketball, so why couldn't Shaq be one of those if that's all he wanted to do? Hell, he could have played Tupac's part in Above The Rim.
My point wasn't that Shaq is in a movie. Or in a commercial but that he is invincable in them. Even though Space Jams sucked I laughed at Barkley getting schooled by the 12 year old girl. Would Superman, Diesel, Shaqfu, Big Daddy, or whatever nickname he uses do anything that doesn't make him look good? Shit Shaq even said that if he paid baseball he would have hit better than 200. Of course that is BS a 7'3" man would suck at batting because he would have a 5' strike zone.
And did he not release an album talking about how great he was? Is Shaq known for saying good things about other players or talking trash? Hell, when was the last time you heard him say anything good about anyone from another team?
So before you call me bitter call tell me how anything I said is wrong. Don't just blow it off. I like a lot of rich black, famous, actors and athletes. But Shaq is what I dislike the most in pro athletes. Rude and believes his own hype.

Oh, that makes sense, because the art of emceeing doesn't include professing how much better of a lyricyst you are than everyone else. Give me a break. Every rapper in history has proclaimed his greatness while putting down the skills of others. Granted, Shaq is NO WHERE NEAR a good emcee; I would barely consider him an artist (but he's done more than me, so who am I to talk). At least Shaq has the understanding of rap history; what he did on that album is one of the five components of hip hop; the battle.

Why SHOULD Shaq say anything good about players on other teams? They're his opponents. He's got the mentality that no one is better than him, and that's a big part of why he wins so often. No one can stop him (legally), so why should he praise people for making half assed attempts to do so by flopping, holding his arms, and beating the absolute shit out of him? And you cannot deny that Shaq takes an equal beating in the post, if not more so because he's a much bigger target.

Shaq SHOULD believe his own hype; I have yet to see anyone come close to stopping him. Until they change the rules (which I'm sure the will), I don't think I will EVER see someone who can stop him. He is by far the most dominant player in the league. Besides, I've never liked "humble" atheletes because I think it's a heaping pile of bullshit. I'd much rather listen to a man who is honest about his opponents than someone saying "Yeah, Vlade played his heart out, and if he continues to work, I don't think I'll be able to be as dominant next year."

Well, I for one don't want to hear about him and his fear of his Irish Curse. Rap sucks when people keep singing about how great they are. Granted Shaq is better at more things than most of the rappers. But shouldn't the 7 million a year contract and all the groupies be enough? Why inflict his "music" on the world.

So because Shaq is the "best" he should never say anything good about anyone ever? Not they played a good game and we won. Or they beat us this time but we will get them the next. But every time Shaq loses it's because of the refs calls. And any time another bitches (which all NBA teams need to quit) they are being pussies. Not very consistent.
My complaint about the commercials isn't that he plays the 2 high school kids but that he completely kicks their ass. Yes he is the best center in the league. Yes he is one of the 5 best now. And yes the Lakers are equal to the Bull's 90 championship teams. But why show a commercial with him schooling 2 kids on the playground? Does that impress anyone? Shit Ostertag could probably beat 2 high school kids. Oh wait that wouldn't feed Shaq's huge ego.

Y'know, I do agree that Shaq tends to be a little whining bitch after every loss. But so does Phil Jackson. Kobe Bryant. Everybody on the entire Lakers team. When the Lakers win a game, the opponents are all “they played a good game and they deserved to win.” When the Lakers lose, the Lakers are always bitching about the officials being in their opponents' pockets. Nevermind the number of no-calls that Shaq and Kobe both get.

But I'll give Shaq this: He is aggressive, and that's something that has to be respected. There are plenty of guys in the NBA who are at least as talented as Shaq, but they're not aggressive enough. People say Shaq's a fat-ass, but the truth is he's just very, very strong. He couldn't have stayed as good as he's been for so long if he didn't work like a madman to keep his body in the condition it is. And that dedication is something that no one else with his frame seems to have.

Hey speaking of hip hop music - a thought came to mind regarding an emcee's "self-glorification."

My opinion is that the two greatest "rappers" ever -

Christopher Wallace (Biggie Smalls) and Tupac Shakur RIP

never talked about how great they were. Maybe they did not have to compensate for their insecurities because they KNEW they were the best.

Oh well - I wish it was '96 again.

Actually, they did talk about how great they were, just not as often as rappers today do and not in the same way.

It was usually more about how many girls they f*cked and how easy it was for them, and how hard they were and how many of their enemies they had killed. As opposed to all the "I'm a ka-jillionaire and my 3 year old son has 20 inch gold rims on his tricycle and check out the 7 platinum Rolexes I wear on one arm" crap that's out now.

And again, it was waay less then folks do today.

This guy says pretty much everything that I want to say.

I'm sick and tired of one or two players just coming out and being the be-all end all of basketball. It seems like anyone who follows basketball considers Shaq and Kobe be be some sort of Golden Gods. Well as this article states at least one of them is not.

To me basketball is becoming a sport that is dominanated by one team. It's getting to the point of just letting LA (or the Bulls in the 90's) have the trophy and let everyone else play it out for second place.

I'm biding my time when Shaq or Kobe go down to injury and watch as the Lakers squrm to try to win games because two of their best players are out of the game. Then the Dallas', San Antonio's and even New Jersey's of the league will have a chance to shine.

Yeah, about 2 weeks ago.

I hereby apologize on behalf of the Lakers (oh hell, I'll even apologize for the Bulls of the 90's while I'm at it) for winning. My bad. By the way, if it was your favorite team doing all the winning, would it still be a bad thing?

Wishing injuries on the players? You sir, have just taken the art of Hating to a brand new level of excellence, and for this I commend you.

Then the Dallas', San Antonio's and even New Jersey's of the league will have a chance to shine.

Hold up. Didnt San Antonio just win an NBA championship like 6 or 7 years ago? And wasnt New Jersey JUST in the NBA finals for the first time in like FOREVER? Yes? Oh. Ok.

If it was my favorite team doing all the winning than I would be happy becuase it is some other team besides friggin' Lakers (LA has a second team the Clippers, but I don't want to confuse the two ;)) winning. In fact if my favoite team was winning then it would be a good thing because it shows that there are teams out there that do not need to throw out some "I get paid six-bajillion dollars to dunk a basketball, and that's all" player in order to win.

It seems like all the good teams in most major sports (Baseball and Basketball in particular) can buy a championship with all the money they throw at their players, and the amounts that they spend getting free agents.

Now I know what you're thinking.

"Torach, they deserve to get the kind of money they get because they can play good basketball." Well that article seems to have some good facts about how Shaq plays. Granted most of his free throws come from teams like to play 'Hack a Shaq' but that is the only weapon some teams have to stop him. Granted I know that there are probably other ways to stop him, but this seems like the best way some teams have.

Basically what this diatribe boils down to is that I'm sick and tired of one team every year getting the title because they can pay their players obscene amounts of money to play for them. That and because they are superstars, they get more calls for them from the refs. I'm sick of all the press time they get from the national media because he's Shaq and he can dunk a basketball plowing through 5 guys in the process and not drawing an offensive foul.

I'm beginning to think that Mark Cuban was right when he says that the referees in the NBA are a joke.

BTW: My favoite team. The Dallas Mavericks.

Frosty is right. If it was the Bucks winning three in a row, it would be all "isn't that great."

By they way, the Celtics still lead the Lakers 16-11 in NBA Championships!!

If you're gonna be *that* biased, at least play it off like you're not. It gives your arguments more crediility that way. It sounds like you'd still hate the Lakers and Shaq if he could shoot 3-pointers, drive the lane like a 6-foot point guard, and make 100% of his free-throws, all while playing for the league minimum. You're just mad that YOUR team didnt win.

Now I know what you're thinking.

Sounds like I owe you another apology, so here goes:
I'm sorry your teams have no other way to stop Shaq than to foul him. Also, I think they deserve to make the kind of money they do because they put asses in the seats and sell the most T-shirts, as well as win games. And whether you think Shaq plays good or not, you cant deny that he (along with Kobe) took the Lakers all the way 3 years in a row. I think that alone earns him his fat check.

Basically what this diatribe boils down to is that I'm sick and tired of one team every year getting the title because they can pay their players obscene amounts of money to play for them. Pieman already covered this (Hi Pieman!), but I *HIGHLY* doubt you would be complaining if it were your team winning. Which brings me to this...

BTW: My favoite team. The Dallas Mavericks.

Cant argue with that, they're a good team. But I'm just curious, wouldnt it make more sense to direct all your hating efforts towards the team that actually knocked your team out of the play-offs?

Actually the team that knocked Dallas out of the playoffs nearly knocked the Lakers out of the playoffs too, and I so would have loved that. I was cheering that Sacramento would take out the Lakers so that it would take the wind out of their sails.

I don't know why I do not have any venom for the Kings. I guess it is because they are not as high profile as the Lakers.

Oh well there's always next season.

Maybe, Torach, it's because they were on their way to that image, but sent White Chocolate off to Memphis in exchange for a PG that actually makes his entire team better. Besides, it's not just ShaqandKobe and someone to hit the clutch 3, then 8 warm bodies. It's a bunch of good players contributing somewhat more equally.

Besides, does Shaq play defense? Blocking shots isn't in and of itself great defense (I learned that thanks to Emeka Okafor of my Connecticut Huskies)... at least MJ was a more complete superstar. The Kings realized that Bibby was a defensive upgrade. Sure, Shaq can make it from end to end, but look what happens to a team like the Kings or Mavericks, who have big men that can take Shaq outside. Not so invincible, now, are ya, Shaq?

Maybe what pisses me off about the Lakers is that they have very few real fans; most of their fans (a lot more than the Bulls, let me tell ya) are bandwagoners. The NBA and NBC rammed the Lakers down our throats until we swallowed, and (admittedly, this will be a weak point) a lot of the coverage of the NBA by casual news outlets is "ooh, let's pull for the Lakers so we can watch celebrities watch a game". If everything were like this, we'd be watching the Red Sox to watch HHH and Katie Couric, rather than to watch, you know, the RED SOX. (You know I had to slip that in there. ;))

As for the comments about the Spurs and Nets, two different scenarios. The Lakers pretty much sleepwalk through the first two-thirds of the season, then beat the hell out of everyone until after the playoffs. When the Spurs won, it was the strike season, so there were only 50 games. The Lakers were caught off-guard, and mercifully went down. Besides, they had the Twin Towers '99 (Robinson and Duncan). As for the Nets, they play in, ya know, the EASTERN Conference. That conference is much more wide open, and to many people, more entertaining. There is no one team that has a moose like Shaq on their team and can consequently bully their way through the season. That's a conference where we can have teams like Boston and New Jersey build themselves up and come out of the cellar, whereas teams in the West are stuck under Shaq's fat ass.

Besides, some of my vitriol towards Shaq is because of his asinine attempts at humor, which of course everyone fawns over. When he said LSU stood for "Love Shaq University", I was about to stomp a mudhole in my TV. Besides, what's his degree in? GENERAL STUDIES? WTF is that? (I'm in college right now, and I actually picked a friggin' major.) People also blew him for going back and finishing his degree, whereas they were about to blow VC's head off for going back to UNC to pick up his degree on the day of a Game 7. Jackasses. Shaq, you're not funny, you're not entertaining, just stay off my TV unless it's a game against my team.

(And for the record, I am a Char--err, Nawlins fan, and I have nothing bad to say about Kobe. We drafted him, ya know, and traded him for Vlade. He was ready for the NBA, and became a superstar because he can actually play.)

I guess one person's wide-open conference is another person's weak conference. New Jersey had a 52-30 record, which is remarkable for the Nets considering their history. However, 52-30 in the West means that you don't even get homecourt advantage, much less the #1 seed. While the East is more evenly matched, the West has the 4 best teams in the league and any one of them in the Finals would be heavy favorites over whoever the East can produce. I doubt the Nets would've had a much better chance had they faced the Kings instead.

(shakes head) I like Shaq, he amuses me. More in a laugh at him than laugh with him way, but he amuses me, thus I like him. I hate the Lakers. Go ahead and put that in first, get it out of the way.

Anyway, yeah Shaq gets away with tons of stuff, fine. No arguments there. Watch Allen Iverson play. Watch Allen Iverson walk EVERY time he dribbles the basketball. Seriously. He puts his hand under the ball every time, palms it. I don't see an Allen Iverson article on Page 2 of the ESPN.com website. My team is the Raptors, Vince Carter, he walks 85% of the time he gets the ball. I mean the NBA doesn't call anything anymore, that's not Shaq's fault. I mean, if I could get away with it, I would do it. Shaq bends the rules. He's a heel, aren't we supposed to think heels are cool?

Ignore that last line, it was dumb, I would delete it, but I want the world to see how ignorant it truly is.

Anyway, back to the thought at hand, anyone who says Shaq isn't talented is ignorant. Period. I mean, the guy averages a double double. Priest Lauderdale was 7'3" 350 and he was in the NBA for what? 2 weeks? I mean, it's not all size, the guy does have some skill. He passed out of double teams well, he has a good jump shot...okay, a decent jump shot. And yeah, he doesn't make free throws, but he makes them when they matter. Which is better than being Jason *AHEM* Jay Williams, who makes free throws, but doesn't make them when they matter. Also, to further another comment, if Shaq was on YOUR team, something tells me you'd have no problem with him. If only the Raptors could get him...
