The unexpected. But I guess that was a one night only dealie at Money in the Bank.

Expectation is a funny thing. This show ended and CM Punk still holds the belt he won last night. I did not expect that. In fact, Punk humiliated Vince McMahon on camera about 500 different ways in the past few weeks and got no comeuppance. That's worth something.

Yes, this appears to be a reset of sorts. How bad or good it is depends on the direction they start to take next week. They built up enough goodwill in the past month for me to give them the courtesy of seeing what they have planned.

So, why would the Miz or Del Rio not just take in a chair/weapon, beat his opponent mercilessly, and then pin him? Not like he'd get DQ'd, right? (That's how it worked on the Playstation, anyway). Conversely, if Del Rio's the MITB winner, why wouldn't he forfeit his match, rest up, and just challenge the winner, who would've had to win 3 matches in under 2 hours? It *was* nice to see all the wrestling, though, with limited backstage stuff.

I was actually thinking about both of these points as well, and here's what I came up with. First of all, Del Rio might as well take his chance in the tournament, because after all, two shots at the title are better than one. If he loses (which he did), then he can cash in the case.

The DQ thing is a little weirder. They obviously weren't even starting a count, but I'm not sure that meant it was a no DQ stip. The way I decided to take it was that if someone got himself DQ'ed, then nobody would advance. You couldn't win on a DQ.

But that's the thing: They DID (kinda) kill the storyline. Wade Keller made a good point - With the Flair angle back in '91, they did a Luger/Windham match that was beyond boring and Luger wasn't taken seriously as champ as everyone wanted Flair to come back. They needed to project that whoever won this tourney and would be champ going forward would be taken seriously and would be seen at a 'championship' level instead of a 'placeholder' when (or if) Punk comes back. In storyline terms, NOTHING should be more important than the title, but they made the trials and tribulations of a 65 year old man and his 41 year old son in law seem like they take precedence over one of their 'standard bearers'. At some point and time, you can't always shoehorn the McMahons into EVERY major angle.

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

I hope Rey wins the tournament and becomes a WWE Champion. But I don't hope it's a setup for Del Rio to cash in his MITB and beat Rey instantly. Although, it kinda has to go to Del Rio at some point, doesn't it? At least Rey can get a win over Miz and a title win before getting squashed with a legit excuse from being worn down.

I think they're handling this as well as they can, I don't think they've messed up anything yet and giving Punk the title and vacating it for a tournament is a great idea to set up his inevitable return and keep things moving.

Making HHH the new Suit of the company is a good idea. We all know where HHH stands in the company by now and as long as they keep it a little bit in the realm of "reality," (not like the HHH-Steph Era in 2000) it's a good change-up.

Geez, it seemed like it was just match after match after match tonight. Too damn much wrestling on this show. #IWantWrestling

Just before the first round ended, you could kinda tell they were in full PRESERVE THE SYMMETRY OF THE GRAPHIC mode so Miz/Mysterio seemed kind of obvious.

This at least explains why Scott Armstrong is still employed after last night....wait, no it doesn't at all! This aspect of the program has gone far too unnoticed! All that history between Punk and Armstrong - IGNORED! And you're telling me Vince didn't pull him aside BEFORE the MitB main event to give him a heads up on his plans? DUBIOUS

OK, my window has passed on that complaint, so I won't harp on it much longer.

References to TNA (vague and otherwise) on WWE TV:

1. JR calling a side slam a "black hole slam."
2. Mr. Kennedy saying "thanks for showing up" to fake Razor Ramon a night after Scott Hall no-showed a TNA PPV.
3. Joey Styles calling Kid Kash "Mr. TNA- Total Non-Stop Attitude" at One Night Stand.
4. Tonight

Any others?

After further thought, perhaps they knew going into MITB that it would be a killer show. Perhaps now, instead of after Wrestlemania, the new "season" starts.

Or like DC Comics, they see a chance to start over. We could see a new status quo....until Punk comes back to start a crisis.

Show couldn't live up to the Punk stuff without Punk, but Punk couldn't be on the show to sell that he'd actually done the thing he'd spent the whole month talking about. So they tried to capitalize on the attention with one of the bigger and last bullets in their gun. It's not like they could've picked up where they left off with Shootin' Kofi Kingston or something.

They've tried "Vince is out!" before a few times, sure, but putting Triple H in that role gives them new storyline options for him to try to bring Punk back and/or feud with him. Punk vanishing is necessary, but the thing is so hot right now that I wouldn't want to wait too long, like for him to, say, come back and win the Royal Rumble as a surprise or something (big a pop as that might get).

There are a lot of ways it could go, so that's exciting even if the downtime to make it work will be less so.

Bumping the match to determine the new world champion on a whim was crazy dumb though, especially when they could've just said the finals were next week to begin with. Using the briefcase is more of an injustice if the guy has wrestled three matches in the same night you already lost too. Oh well.

It's kind of stunning they went the entire show without mention that WWE, y'know, has ANOTHER WORLD CHAMPION ON THE ROSTER. I guess in storyline terms, Christian is still selling last night's beatdown, but this would've been a perfect time for a cameo appearances to boast about being the top champion in the company.

I actually think Rey wins the title next week but there's NO cash-in, thus setting up Rey vs. Cena (a legitimate fresh, marquee match) as the main event for Summerslam. Cena vs. Del Rio doesn't seem big enough yet to headline a major show and Cena/Miz is a bit played out.

Del Rio also won the triple threat to determine the number one contender after Punk's initial suspension, so you could make the argument that he has at least two saved up like extra lives in a game of Megaman. Personally, I think the next time Del Rio challenges, he really ought to win. Coming up just short at 'Mania and losing the Ladder match to Christian at Extreme Rules were fine for "character building/showing he can hang" main event flirtations, but you don't wanna have him challenge in too many more high profile bouts and fail or he'll get that "can't do it" stink on him.

Pretty meh show. As others have pointed out, this wasn't going to be as hot as last night no matter what they did, but this was almost as far from it as you could've gotten. I'm a mark for tourneys, but you could have called that final from a mile away. And, yes, having it next week and saying so ahead of time is much more honest. Bait and switch burns your fanbase on taking anything you say seriously. See, "fired, free or" and "banned from RAW, if he loses Chris Jericho will be," for other instances of this unfortunate practise. That being said, the show after Survivor Series '97 was also the shits, as were almost the next two whole months of shows afterward, but that didn't mean they weren't part of a momentum shift.

On any other night, I'd agree with you on this, but tonight was different. I'm being naive, of course, but I really think Vince's sobbing was real and this really is the end of him as an on-air character and possibly the beginning of at least a partial transition with some off-air duties as well. They put a storyline veneer on it, but I think they basically shot with that. This felt more real to me (dammit), than any previous instance where they've done a "Vince is out" deal. Again, just my instinct or perhaps, again, naivete, but that's how I took it.

They sures did! Shawn was suspended, legit, for steroids, which he denied ever doing. They did a battle royal, the last two in would have a single match the following week for a new IC Champ. Ended up being Martel/Ramon, and Ramon came away with his first IC belt. Then when Michaels came back as the unbeaten Champ, he had his IC belt (which wasn't recognized) and Ramon had his, thus leading to the Ladder Match @ Mania X. It was good times.

Didn't he, though? For all the talk that he's on his way out and is broken down, you can't say enough about Rey's value. He woke up a dying crowd (as much as they could be), and saved what could have been a drizzling shits of a show.

OK, how about this:

So many back-and-forths between two so-called competing companies...leads to

1.WWE announcing the taking over of TNA
2. Fired Vince McMahon showing up on TNA
3. CM Punk showing up on TNA with the belt

I was thinking it was just myself hearing Vince slip in a WWF Champion during the end, until I read that part of the recap.

The Gene Simmons style KISS mask by Rey is one of his better efforts.

I'm gonna reserve judgment on the rest and see where they go, especially since the guy that's owned 2/3 of the previous Raw telecasts is supposedly not in contract.

Vince with the waterworks, pretty convincing, Trips with the "I love you pop," not so much.

5. Kaval actually saying the words "Total Nonstop Action" in a promo on NXT, and getting immediately called an idiot by Michael Cole.

Didn't see RAW, I had to work; but I don't think it's a reset button exactly... just a cool-down a little bit before the Punk angle gets taken to its next level. The company, storyline-wise, trying to pretend that nothing's wrong.

No wonder HHH's movie was sent straight to DVD and Netflix. That was just bad acting through and through.

Tonight's show could have been much better than how it turned out. The match ups were basically all good with some of the best top talent on the roster. If there was any time to have a 3 hour Raw, it was for this tourney. The matches were cut too short due to having to get them all crunched in between the beginning & ending promos.
