And here I thought the most interesting moment on the show was going to be the finish to the Bourne/Sin Cara match (that crowd jumped to their feet when Bourne went for his shooting star press. I hope somebody backstage noticed that). Punk's promo was gold, and they cut him off at just the right moment. We all wanted to know the bullying story. I'm curious to see how they're going to resolve his "suspension," but my guess is that they'll just have Cena lobby to overturn it. This really is the promo equivalent of the Nexus attack. Lightning struck twice; let's see if they know how to capitalize on it this time.

Lost in the shuffle was a hint in the opening segment of what Punk can do next with his professional career - become a Shawn Michaels impersonator!

Also that's a terribly generic and forgettable name for your hunting show, Shawn.

Well said. But don't forget Heyman at One Night Stand when he told JBL the only reason he was World Champ for a year is because HHH doesn't work Tuesdays.

Punk is THE reason to watch right now. I really don't know what they will do, and that is a rare thing these days. I still think he wins the belt but the MITB winner takes it from him on his way out, but am really hoping he sticks around for a big Summerslam match, otherwise why tease us with these confrontation with Austin and HBK?

Quick question:

So is all of this just a prelude of Punk being a face, if he stays? And if he leaves, doesn't this promo, really, mean nothing?

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

THE OPTIONS (as I see them).....

PUNK WINS, "LEAVES" W/ THE TITLE: Punk becomes an outsider, a renegade. He continues to cut promos, and run amok outside the establishment. Everyone fails to take him out. So, in a fit of desperation, Vince goes to the one man who can compete with him and take the title back. The one man who began the whole anti-establishment shtick.

Stone Cold Steve Austin. Main event at Summerslam.

If they REALLY wanted some longterm planning Punk wins, Vince declares him PNG and declares the title means nothing. They keep Punk under "contract", have him show up every so often to cut promos (he can't lose during this time of course). Vince still needs to go to Austin, thus making Punk vs Austin at Wrestlemania in Miami.

PUNK LOSES: Punk leaves and pulls a Jericho. He'll be back. Or the whole contract situation is a ruse to build the angle.

NO CONTEST: Punk goes further off the rails, delivers another insane great promo, and takes some time off.

As shrewd as Vince is, I have a hard time believing he hasn't got some kind of binding agreement with Punk to keep him a part of the WWE in the long term. I can't see anyone being given this kind of push/leeway if there's even the slightest chance of them walking away for good in the near future.

After reading the spoilers for next week, I am less hopeful. I can actually see Punk beating Cena only to run into an SOS or Skull Crushing Finale or someone's finisher to lose the title before the PPV ends. It would make whoever did it, the savior of Raw and maybe the company. It would be a good storyline for someone to turn to Cena and say I saved this belt when you lost it.

Yes, this is it, exactly. First thought I had after it ended. Somehow, just over a year later, they have a chance at a do-over to not blow it with a potentially amazing angle anchored by a brilliant opening. This is every bit as exciting as Nexus started out being, and has all of the potential - more, even - than they squandered when they had Headkickin' Randy Orton lose the blowoff match where they should have put him over a few years ago.

Handled properly now - which probably would mean letting him run things and not handling him at all - Punk can go turn himelf into an Austin level-character, with the advantages of lowered expectations (nobody in their right mind can expect him to get prime Austin ratings, but he can still generate the buzz they need and want) and a guy who obviously intently watched what Austin did the first time around and has the advantage of going meta with it.

But forget all that, about where it might go and how likely they are to blow it, that was just a fantastic segment, all thanks to Punk. Everything about it was great, from the content (choosing the bullying campaign as the cutoff point was smart and well thought-out) to the delivery. I especially liked the part in the middle where he cut off the cheers by rolling his own fans back into it, that's the kind of attention to detail and knowing the audience that makes this work.

And it did work. In another thread, someone asked about liking comedy matches in Chikara but hating Hornswoggle, and the answer was that something done well by someone who knows how to do it is something worth watching. What Punk did and how he did it is how you do that kind of promo and that kind of angle. The terrible ways they did fake shoots in late WCW and a lot of TNA is how you don't do it. Punk up there owning that moment should be the definitive "See all that stuff in there, Homer? That's why your robot never worked!" moment for Russo.

The only thing bad thing about the whole segment is that it was so great that people will now forget the second best part of the show, the exciting allience of Misterio and Riley, which I now and forever dub: Junior-Varsity.

This is probably waaay off the cuff, but it at least did pop in my mind ... With Punk's mentioning of ROH, the recent WWE try-outs of Hero & Claudio, the ROH singing of Hass & Benjamian, could there be some backdoor "working agreement" between WWE & ROH (similar to the WWF/ECW deal many moons ago)? ...

While the reaction to the show has mainly been about Punk's promo, and understandably so, I thought that this was the strongest Raw from top to bottom in quite some time.

The tornado match was the best match I've seen on Raw in ages. I've never been interested in anything Mark Henry has ever done, until now. The Sin Cara/Evan Bourne match was enjoyable. Seeing DDP was a nice surprise. I could go on... if Raw carries on like this, I will be very happy indeed. Hot angles, some good wrestling, and plenty of new faces slowly but surely getting over.

Mayhap it was the camerawork, but the timing on the tables match ending was stellar.

And then Punk gets awesome. Again, this is Punk's title angle. Cena is tangentially involved, and that's fine. It's not Punk vs. Cena. It's Punk vs. world (wrestling entertainment), and unless this ends with him swerving us as a corporate champion, this looks to be dead solid leading up to the PPV.

Tornado Tag Matches are the great forgotten match since ECW went away.

Somewhere Vince Russo is wishing he had something to do with that Punk promo. It's what the poor guy shoots for every week.

I have a question about the Sin Cara match. Were the lights supposed to be like that for the match (blue/gold like his outfit) or was a goof that they were kept like that? It was a little distracting.

BOOM. Distant runners up: Rey-Ri, Sux19

Astute point. I think it'll turn 10 in September. Maybe we can all get together and sing "You Are The Wind Beneath My Ring" for it.

Yep, Sin Cara has Original Kane powers over in-ring lighting. But I can't see it lasting much longer since most people seem to not like it.

Had to change pants after that promo. Probably the best sense Heyman trashed Vince on Smackdown. They are going to have to be careful though, because they've dumbed down their audience so much that half this stuff is gonna go over their heads.

At the moment, this doesn't look like it is leading to an Austin match. Logically Austin would support everything Punk is saying. I suppose that you COULD have Austin come out and talk about how he hated Vince, but that he did business the right way and beat Vince at his own game instead of leaving with the belt.

The Nexus analogy is a good one because I have only a shade more faith in this creative team than I do TNA's.

Still it is good to look forward to Raw again.

Based on the mic cutting out right after he indirectly mentioned Steph and her husband, it seems more likely Triple H would come out to defend the company.

I figured it was cut off there more because WWE Against Bullying is their goodwill program.

'That WWE sure is trashy, but it's good to see them take a stand on bullying. Maybe it's okay if Little Jimmy watches Raw after all'

I imagine Vince would have been willing to take just about anything CM Punk was about to dish out, but not at the expense of The Bullying Campaign and maybe PEDs.

The whole thing doesn't really remind me of Austin and it has similarities of Nexus tearing shit up, but the whole thing reminds me more of when Bret started to snap and went heel. Granted CM Punk is already a heel, but today's WWE is very similar to the In Your House WWF when Bret turned. So, maybe we get lucky and it's the start of an edgier or more adult themed product.
