The Recap for TNA Impact 6.23.2011, taped from the Impact Zone in Orlando, FL.

Last week, Sting went haywire, Jarrett got exiled to Mexico, Austin Aries stole the show, and TNA extended it's horrible-show streak to five weeks.

The show starts with Jarrett (he's still here) and Eric Bischoff backstage. JJ says he wants to be a part of the BFG Series. Someone tell him it's already started. Bischoff rightly points out that Jeff's been exiled to Mexico and must leave. Of course, Jarrett won the AAA World Heavyweight Championship recently so it fits. Eric tells him that they must expand and he must lead the Immortal takeover of Mexico. Apparently Immortal exists only in the minds of Bischoff.

Bischoff heads to the ring to call out Sting, and he obliges. Bischoff calls him a coward and asks him whether he thought Eric wouldn't find out about his actions last week. Sting's now in evil-Joker-Sting mode, altering the tone of his voice and changing his speech mannerisms. "You hurt my feelings" - Sting. Sting threatens to snap his neck and calls him a thief and a liar. Eric's a cancer that has affected the real Hulk Hogan, but that's going to change. Bischoff retorts by saying that he and Hogan will always be BFF, and there's nothing Sting can do about it. He makes Sting v Abyss for tonight, but Sting says Eric has a price to pay. Sting proceeds to turn Bischoff into his little bitch, complete with Scorpion Deathdrop and makeup treatment, then the Deathlock into the commercial. 0 for 1. I like the character, though it's more or less a total Joker ripoff. I have a few reservations about this, though - Sting was the voice of reason not two weeks ago and now he's batshit crazy. He also comes off as a heel and from previous experience, we all know Sting's not good at playing heels. He just doesn't look comfortable playing a character with more than shades of grey. The character could yet work, but I'm not convinced Sting has bought into it totally.

Apparently the BFG Series matches also happen at house shows, as they show the recap of Gunner getting a clean pin on AJ Styles, which is quite ridiculous. The updated scorecard shows Gunner, AJ, RVD, Steiner, and Matt Morgan with 7 points each.

Match 1: Bound for Glory Series: Bully Ray v Scott Steiner: I can't keep track of Steiner's face/heel status, but the crowd is firmly behind him here. Ray controls the early goings until he misses a splash in the corner, allowing Steiner to hit his trademark spots and the pushups. Corner charge eats boot, so Ray sets up for the Bubba Bomb, but Steiner escapes. Steiner makes the comeback with the overhead suplexes but the ref gets wiped out in the process. Steiner catches him in the hideous Recliner (where he doesn't even bother to pull back on it) and Ray has to tap like a bitch to it. I feel sorry for him, but there's no ref to see it. Steiner, like an idiot, goes to check on the ref, allowing Ray the time to find a chain and clock Steiner with it for the win in 6 minutes. 1 for 2. It was nothing offensive, and that's a plus for a match between these guys. I would prefer a promo war between them. Anything that gets Steiner on the mic is gold.

Bischoff wants Abyss to "leave pieces of Sting's ass all over the arena." Right then. Anderson shows up but gets yelled at for his lack of help while Bischoff was being made Sting's bitch, but he explains that he was heating his hamburger. Eric reminds him that Anderson is champion due to his help and wants Anderson to join Immortal, but Kenny Boy ain't movin'. Bischoff says to think about it, and makes it apparent that he's less than pleased.

Velvet Sky and Miss Tessmacher come out for a talk before their match. Velvet is sick of getting her ass kicked so she asked management for a no-hold-barred match, but since ODB and Jackie are not on contract, it must be a normal match. We're making up LOGIC~! as we go along here. Tessmacher should never be allowed a microphone. Jackie and ODB head down, so we have...

Match 2: Velvet Sky and Miss Tessmacher v Jackie Moore and ODB: They brawl around ringside but there's no bell as we head into a commercial. Back from the break, it's Jackie beating down Tessmacher. Tessmacher can't get a tag as ODB comes in to beat her down further. She escapes with a spear and it's a hot tag to Velvet, who cleans house. The ref gets bumped again, allowing Jackie to get Velvet with a low blow in about 4 minutes. 1 for 3. Woeful. There's no reason for Jackie to be on my TV at all, and it doesn't look as though the Impact Zone audience cares for her at all.

Tara has Madison Rayne at the PPV, so Madison shows up to offer her the opportunity of begging her way out of the match. Tara declines, so Madison makes the mistake of hitting her. Tara smashes her into a wall and beats her senseless. "Never touch me again!"

Beer Money is backstage. Roode is in the BFG Series, but he's still not cleared to wrestle. Wow, which idiot took the decision to have him in the series? Storm and Roode re-iterate that they're an awesome tag team, but they're in it for the World Title.

Scott Steiner storms into the Immortal locker room swinging a chain, but Bully Ray is the voice of reason, rightly saying that Steiner would've done the same thing. Ray offers Steiner a spot in Immortal. Steiner will think about it. 2 for 4. I still can't get behind the idea of this short-segment barrage that we get on every week of Impact, but this was quite decent. The Tara/Madison and Beer Money exchanges played out well, and even though I'm not a fan of the continued existence of Immortal and yet another storyline about recruiting someone in it, two out of three ain't so bad.

Match 3: Bound For Glory Series: Beer Money v Matt Morgan and Crimson: Only the person getting the pin in a tag match gets the points, which is all kinds of retarded. Both teams tag in and out quickly until Storm gets caught by Morgan with a discus clothesline. Crimson comes occasionally to throw one of the four moves he knows. Storm catches Crimson with the Lung Blower and gets the hot tag. Morgan misses the Carbon Footprint, allowing Roode to catch him in a Fujiwara Armbar, but Crimson saves. Double Suplex! BEER! MONEY! Morgan breaks that up with a double clothesline, however. Roode catches him with a blockbuster, but his arm is shot. He then stupidly backdrops Storm onto Crimson, hurting it even more. Morgan finds him with the Carbon Footprint and that's game over in 6 minutes. 3 for 5. Good match, as is expected from Beer Money. Morgan held up his end of the bargain, though I'd still rate Crimson closer to a broomstick than a wrestler. They worked Roode's injury angle into the match quite nicely.

Abyss points out that he listens to both Sun-Tzu and Bischoff. He promises to wipe out Sting.

Eric Young is at a tourist spot, apparently looking for another TV star to defend his title against.

AJ Styles heads out to talk about Destination X - he's coming back to the X-Division. He announces the return of the six-sided ring for the PPV. AJ talks about the history of the X-Division, namedropping Jerry Lynn and Elix Skipper among others, but Samoa Joe cuts him off. He also takes the time to put over Styles and the division before getting to the point. If Styles is the heart of the division, but Joe gave it the balls. Christopher Daniels cuts him off, dressed in full corporate attire for some reason. Daniels wants a match with Styles, who accepts, leaving Joe out in the cold.

Backstage, Kaz is not particularly happy with the challenge that Daniels made. Joe shows up to make fun of Fortune, reminding me that they too still exist. Kaz tells him to stay out of it and gets his ass handed to him as a result. Joe killing people and walking away is always fun. 3 for 6. Joe's beatdown almost saved this, but the combined stupidity of Eric Young, Abyss ripping off Raven's old act, the overly long promo, complete with nonsensical verbal blowjobs between rivals, and a man called the "Fallen Angel" in corporate attire was just too much.

Match 4: X-Division Contract Match: Zema Ion v Dakota Darsow v Federico Palacios: They had video packages highlighting each guy throughout the show. In a cool touch, we get a graphic showing which guy is in which color, like boxing. Dakota is Barry Darsow's son. Palacios is lightning quick, but gets caught in a DDT by Zema for 2. Darsow takes over with some power stuff, but Palacios dumps him and nails him with a suicide dive. Zema nearly kills Palacios with a corkscrew plancha where his feet landed on Palacios's head. Ouch. Darsow pins with a Moonsault back in the ring, but Zema double-stopms him WHILE he's pinning! Palacios is dead, so Zema and Darsow fight over a superplex. Zema wins that and follows with a 450 Splash for the win in 5 minutes. 4 for 7. But barely. It wasn't smooth like last week - there were botches, and crowd didn't start getting into it until the very end. It was spotty with little selling or story, but that was to be expected, I suppose.

RVD is backstage talking about being X-Division before there was an X-Division, but Jerry Lynn showed up to correct him by saying "We were here before there was an X-Division." Lynn's return should've been a MUCH bigger deal, but this is one of TNA's traditional failings, so don't be too surprised.

Match 5: Streetfight: Winter v Mickie James: This is JIP as Winter whips Mickie with a leather belt backstage. Mickie gets her hands on the belt on the stage and nails her with a Thesz Press to take over. They roll down the ramp, where Mickie hits a Rana and Winter is just about done. Missile dropkick inside, but Angelina Love provides the timely interference with the Kobashi Backbreaker and that gets the pin for Winter in 4 minutes. 4 for 8. It was better than the other Knockouts match, but that's not really saying much. We will ignore the stupidity of the ref being distracted in a streetfight. Angelina is smiling postmatch.

Match 6: Abyss v Sting: Borash starts to give the big-match intros, but Sting jumps Abyss midway through it and clotheslines him to the floor. Abyss takes over and grabs an Armbar(?) but it doesn't last too long. Sting runs right into a chokeslam for 2, and Abyss starts reading from the Art of War, while he kicks Sting around. Abyss then takes the barbed-wire glove but Sting avoids it for a while, and gets the Stinger Splash and the Deathdrop for 2. Sting gets the glove and smacks Abyss with it, drawing blood and the DQ in 6 minutes. 4 for 9. It was pretty short and basic but I think that's about all Sting can do at this point. This did a decent job of putting over the new aspects of Sting's character. On the other hand, they really should stop calling Abyss a monster, because he just looks like a confused, albeit large, man incapable of any sort of intimidation. Postmatch, Abyss gets beaten down while Anderson comes out to observe, and that's how we end it this week.

Wrestling Counter: 31 minutes.

The Score: 4 for 9: Coming off several disappointing weeks, this was a much better show - all the matches got some amount of time, and in terms of pacing it was miles ahead of anything that TNA's done on TV in a month and a half. On the other hand, the in-ring stuff was inoffensive but nothing particularly good, and it seemed as though every match had some sort of shenanigans at the finish. I'm not sure what to think of Sting's character yet, though I wish it wasn't such an obvious rip-off. There needs to be more of a build towards Destination X because it has the potential to be one of TNA's better shows of the year. While it's not a great show, or even a fairly good one, it's not offensive and that's an upgrade for TNA at this point. The streak is over.

It was a decent Impact, I think the combination of having the X-Division and Bound for Glory storyline have put them on the right direction. I am not a fan of Jackie either, I would have preferred Roxxie or Taylor or Daffeny. Yet, Daffeny is pretty much done from what I hear and she is suing TNA. I also don't mind the KO division storylines now that Angelina admitted she was pretty much faking the zombie routine.

My giant problem or problems is they have no idea what to do with Anderson and Sting/Bischoff/Hogan is dangerously close to Wrestlecrap. Your World champ isn't even on the show and the last time, we saw him was eating a pin from Gunner who only appeared via house show footage. I actually like the BFG matches being at house shows, but I agree Gunner beating anyone like AJ or Anderson clean right now is a joke. Anderson is getting the Jack Swagger treatment. It would also be nice to know who the heel and faces are in the Anderson/Hogan/Bischoff/Sting/Gunner storyline. Sting acts like a psycho yet we see Eric playing the evil mastermind telling Jarret to rule Mexico. Its like they are playing RISK, whats next the Eric Young lead invasion of Guam, Rico and the other shit islands below the US. Its just too many shades of grey for my liking and I am a guy who wishes the WWE would get a way from the face vs. heel dynamic.

Its a shame the tag team division seems to be disarray due to injury more then anything else. If that was functional, I would say the main event is really the one thing lacking from getting this show functional again.

Umm...Young wasn't even in this segment. It was Bischoff and Jarrett.

Couple thoughts on the show: It was laughably bad how long the ref had to wait between counting two and counting three when one of the X Division guys was supposed to double-stomp another off the top rope before the three-count.

I was at the house show in Buffalo where Matt Morgan and Gunner won their BFG matches. We were told by JB that the matches would air in full on Thursday. Also, we all had pretty much the same reaction as used2bcool when Gunner won.

Also, for some reason, Sting reminded me of Jim Carrey in that first segment, not the Joker.

I only saw the last half hour, 45 minutes, but one of the matches I saw was that triple-threat match. I was convinced that someone was going to get hurt and possibly leave on a stretcher. It was that damn sloppy.

-Oh Jeff, how can we miss you if you never leave???

-Gunner must give the best blowjobs in the lockerroom.

-TNA is becoming more and more like WCW where the undercard stuff is better than the main event.

-If we get Jerry Lynn Vs. RVD at Destination X, I will strongly consider ordering the PPV. Sorry, but that's the ECW mark in me.

Jarrett ending one show by declaring he was leaving and being in the very first segment of the next show is the height of TNA hilarity. I'd think it was intentional self-parody if TNA actually seemed to posses any sort of self-awareness.

-I wanted to like Joker Sting, because it is a gimmick I'm surprised no one has decided to steal, but the execution just has him coming off as a crazy old man.

-I have a bad feeling that Christopher Daniels wearing a tie is forshadowing to Christopher Daniels, member of Immortal.

Oh wow, yes, total brainfart on my part there. I just decided randomly that it was Young in that segment, typed his name, and went on typing. Maybe it would've been better with Young in the segment? Nah, there is no defense for me.

Edited now.

Wasn't it AAA that used to be buddies with WWF when they tried to start their lightweight division? I remember there being a lot of Luchas that looked like Power Rangers. Now seeing this and reading the Chavo thread are they now an American style promotion? Have they always been? Were they defunct for awhile? They aren't letting the TNA guys run things down there are they?

Yes, though it was more people with common enemies banding together in an ultimately fruitless relationship (besides Mil Mascaras thinking he won the Rumble that year)

I remember there being a lot of Luchas that looked like Power Rangers. Now seeing this and reading the Chavo thread are they now an American style promotion? Have they always been?

They've always been American-style compared to the norm in Mexico, though not as much when you compared to US stuff.

AAA's always tended towards trying to find the new young stars and push them as family friendly midcard gimmicks. The Power Rangers styled guys were the mid-late 90s version of that.

    Were they defunct for awhile?

No, but it was close. The founder and creative leader passed away and it looked like that would be it. But they managed to survive.

They aren't letting the TNA guys run things down there are they?

No, though Jarrett is supposedly responsible for the TNA part of this storyline (it's not a Russo thing, which has meant the drugged out zombie bits of TNA have been ignored).

Konnan returned to AAA in late 2004, after a long period of bitterness and estrangement, and had a role in running things since. He's been in charge of booking for around a year, and has had influence in it prior.

It's a shame Sting never seems to embrace the idea of being a heel, because when he's not wearing the paint and has a suit on, he looks like a total sleazeball dick heel. He reminds me of Gene Simmons in that when you look at him, you take an instant dislike to him, even if you're not entirely sure why.

Have you seen Extract? Simmons is great in that.

I don't know what goes on backstage, and could easily be wrong, but it seems to me the several TNA angles have been messed up due to Sting not embracing them (Main Event Mafia is the main one). If that is the case, then they should have fired his ass two years ago.

I think MEM was always set-up for Sting to turn face and Kurt to be the real heel leader of the group. Granted, they pussy foot around it so bad that it was one of the reasons it failed. The other reasons were Foley's involvement and turning Joe for no reason. Sting's name amazingly goes a long way. The ImpactZone loves him and he is still a draw in certain parts of the country.
