The Recap for TNA Impact 6.16.2011, taped from the Impact Zone in Orlando, FL.

TNA's coming off a solid PPV marred by a few boneheaded finishes, which is about their usual. They seem to have done away with the episode titles. The horrible-show streak is now at 4 weeks.

We start the show off with some reactions from Slammiversary and the beginning of something called the "Bound for Glory Series" is hyped for tonight. Mr. Anderson starts proper, heading down for what appears to be a party. The ring has beer kegs, food, a stripper pole, and arcade games among other things. Anderson has a black eye. It's the "Asshole Champion Reception" apparently. Anderson says no one wants to party with him, but he didn't come here to make friends. Five things are important to him: "my niece, my wife, me, myself, and I." Gunner provides the interruption as I scratch my head in disbelief. They're really gonna give it the ole college try with this guy, aren't they? Gunner wants a return of favor for helping Anderson beat up Sting last week. The return of favor is of course a World Title shot. LOGIC~! Anderson mocks him and wishes him best in his future endeavors. He wonders if the ink is dry on Gunner's contract yet, and rightly points out that there are several people ahead of him. Anderson goes to drink a beer but it winds up in Gunner's face, who somehow also manages to get cut by the plastic cup. Of course, he doesn't take too well to that and puts Anderson through a table! Ok, then. 0 for 1. It was a decent segment but I have no confidence whatsoever in Gunner as a star. He's the definition of midcard. Anderson carried the segment and Gunner's promo was inoffensive but generic. Also, feeding your new champion to a nobody is probably not the best way to consolidate his position, or that of your World Title.

Match 1: Devon v Hernandez: Devon's family is here. This match, I think, has stemmed from an altercation on Xplosion. Mexican America interferes almost immediately, but it has no effect on Devon, who takes it to Hernandez with a big clothesline. Tenay mentions that Devon's dropped about 25 lbs, which is impressive. The Pope wanders down to ringside to interact with Devon's family and the distraction allows Hernandez a rollup for 2. Devon nails a Thesz Press, so Mexican America storms the ring for the DQ in 2 minutes. 0 for 2. Pointless. Keep your Xplosion feuds on Xplosion. Pope saves afterwards, but he and Devon still have issues so the Staredown~ is on! Devon's wife makes eyes at Pope as he leaves.

Backstage, Anderson wants Bischoff to keep Gunner on a leash. Bischoff doesn't care because Anderson refused to be part of Immortal. Immortal still exists? Bischoff goes on a tangent about the network and makes Anderson v Gunner tonight.

Kurt Angle heads down to the ring, and his children, who were with him before the break, have mysteriously disappeared. Angle talks about putting his gold medals on the line, saying that's not something one does on a whim. He mentions that he trained hard to achieve success in 1996, and he's training again to try and get on the Olympic Wrestling team for 2012, at the age of 43. This part is true, I think, and if he makes it, kudos to him. Jeff Jarrett heads down to the ring one more time. Oh, for fuck's sake! Jarrett wants one more match. I don't. Jeff says their relationship started in a parking lot with a handshake and it will end there tonight in a brawl. At least he promised it will end. The loser will leave TNA. Angle rightly points out that Jeff's word has no value and calls him a "gnat." He wants Jarrett to draw up a contract that specifies very clearly that Jarrett will leave for Mexico without Kurt's kids. Should Jarrett's "pussy ass" manage to get this done, he is on. 1 for 3. At least both of them can cut promos and if it looks as though it ends tonight, so I'll let this slide.

The Bound for Glory Series seems to be the like the G1 Climax, but with a more complicated scoring system. The matches will take place over the next three months, and the winner will go to BFG as the #1 Contender for the World Title. It's a decent idea.

Eric Young interacts with Matt Morgan backstage, and asks him if he's ready for the TV title shot. Morgan's not interested in that, because he's going to be in the BFG Series. EY wants to face a TV star, which doesn't make any sense, but then little of what he does makes sense. Morgan tells him to a find an executive producer who was on a sitcom once. This was intended to be funny, I suppose.

Match 2: X-Division Contract on the Line: Austin Aries v Kid Kash v Jimmy Rave: Well, actually, this is part of a 12-man tournament, I think. Aries gets dumped early as Rave gets a handle on Kash. Aries keeps trying to come in, but it gets him nowhere. Kash springboards into a spear by Rave for 2. Finally Aries has had enough and kicks both their asses. HEAT-SEEKING MISSILE! This match wins already. The crowd loves him. Kash wipes out Rave with a SWANK~ Hilo as he and Aries go at in the ring. Kash gets 2 off a spinebuster but Rave drops him on his head. Aries stops that cover and ends Rave with the Brainbuster in 4 minutes. 2 for 4. No surprises here. Crowd was going ballistic for Aries, though of course, TNA will conveniently ignore that.

Velvet and Tessmacher are backstage as Velvet debuts her swank new attire. They grab each others' asses as a show of solidarity, I suppose.

Match 3: Knockouts Tag Titles: Sarita and Rosita v Velvet Sky and Ms. Tessmacher: I'd forgotten about these titles. The challengers dominate for a while with quick tags and lots of screaming. Sarita turns the tables on Tessmacher, and the champions dominate with quick tags and screaming. See the pattern here? Tessmacher can't wrestle at all. The challengers want a double suplex, but ODB is out to distract Velvet, which results in Tessmacher getting splashed and pinned in 4 minutes. 2 for 5. The Knockouts look good but have little talent, so this should not come as a surprise. I wish they'd given the four minutes to the previous match, but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. And I'm not riding anywhere.

Postmatch, Jaqueline is here! Joy. She and ODB proceed to beat up Velvet and take out quite a few security guards in the process.

Backstage, Jarrett gets the contract made and Hogan signs it, calling JJ "ten times the man Angle is." JJ leaves as Sting shows up. Hogan switches gears and offers him a Title rematch on Impact at some point. Hogan talks about their "history that no one knows about," but Sting is more interested in Hogan's WCW legacy. He brings Hogan's kids into the mix, which sets Hogan off and he tries to throw Sting out, which freaks Sting out. "I'm not ready to leave yet!" Sting goes insane and starts calling him Terry, and wonders if Terry wants to wear a mask. He CLIMBS UP on Hogan's chair and paints his face in the corner! Sting's still on about making choices, and Hogan's face is a mess. 2 for 6. Strange to say the least and not in a good way. Homoerotic overtones too.

Jackie and ODB are backstage, talking about cleaning up the division, so Velvet jumps them. However, the Numbers Game (tm Cole) works against her and she promptly gets he ass kicked. Jackie and ODB rain down insults, one of which might have been "pootie-tang."

Austin Aries promises to make wrestling matter again. Eric Young shows up and tries to start a fight with the announcer, who I'm told is from Wonder Years. Young superkicks him and makes Aries count a pin. Because wrestling matters.

Match 4: BFG Series: Rob Van Dam v Samoa Joe: This is billed as a dream match. Hope it gets time. Despite TNA's best efforts to ruin Joe, the crowd still chants for him. Joe has the early advantage, so RVD bails to the outside. A slingshot is caught into a belly-to-belly for two. RVD avoids Joe in the corner, but the monkey flip fails and RVD hits the floor hard. Elbow Suicada! Joe dominates with strikes and kick to the back of the head for 2. Van Dam misses on a crossbody and Joe just lets him splat. RVD, as usual, is good at taking a beating, but then he just goes back to hitting his spots in the comeback with no regard for psychology. Van Dam fights out of a chinlock and nails a superkick and Rolling Thunder for a close 2. Van Dam catches a big kick and nails the step-over enzuigiri. Joe gets pissed and kills him with a MASSIVE Uranage, but doesn't cover. Instead they fight over a Muscle Buster. RVD wins that, pushes him off the ropes, and the ***** Frog Splash finishes in 9 minutes. 3 for 7. Well, that's a good start to the BFG series. Joe looked like a total beast and crowd was eating it up. RVD gets 7 points for the pin, Joe gets 0.

Gunner is getting stitched up, and reminds us that he doesn't like anyone.

Match 5: Non-Title: Gunner v Mr. Anderson: Bischoff accompanies Gunner to the ring but then leaves rather quickly. Guess he changed his mind. Anderson gets his neckbreaker early and hits the chinlock about a minute and a half into the match. Anderson dominates but misses the Kenton off the top, allowing Gunner a suplex for 2. Anderson fights back with his rolling fireman's carry, but stops to call for the mic and announce himself the winner. He pays for that stupidity when he walks into the F5 in 8 minutes. 3 for 8. Slow and plodding, made more so by the fact that it followed a vastly superior match. Just like his promo, Gunner's offense (what little we saw of it) was generic.

We have Scott Steiner v Bully Ray for next week. Steiner says he's working out because he has nothing else to do. No donuts or burgers for Ray. He yells at Ray because he has no sugar and can't play the guitar. Steiner hopes Ray can find his imaginary balls by next week. Ray is all serious in response, reminding Steiner that he crushed his trachea a couple of years ago. Steiner was awesome there.

Match 6: Parking Lot Brawl: Jeff Jarrett v Kurt Angle: They're surrounded by cars and TNA wrestlers. It's all Angle in the early going as he beats the everloving piss out of JJ. Jarrett fights back by sending him into a car and keeps yelling that he'll never leave TNA as Ray cheers. JJ drops him with the Stroke on the cement and Angle is dead. Jarrett walks away, but Angle gets up! Angle Slam into the hood of a van has JJ reeling and Kurt chokes him out with his own shirt and walks away in about 5 minutes. 3 for 9. That served little purpose and took the focus away from the main event, which was a match featuring the TNA champion.

Postmatch, Jarrett wakes up and says "Adios" to the TNA guys, as Kurt had instructed him earlier, and on that note, we end the show.

Wrestling Counter: 32 minutes.

The Score: 3 for 9: On the positive side, it had two matches that blew away any other wrestling TNA has done on Impact in about a month. On the bad side, the main event was pathetic and the parking lot brawl was an awful way to end the show. They threw a lot of shit at the wall to see what sticks, which seems to be a staple of Russo, and most of it doesn't work for me. Gunner? There's nothing out of the ordinary about him. The BFG series has potential, but the overly complicated scoring system tells me that they will likely overthink things. I know the standard is low for a good Impact show, but this was not that show. The streak is now at 5.

You are a hater.

This show was fantastic! We had the return of Austin Aries, we had the return of Miss Jackie (or whatever they call her. My name for her has always been Texas Titties!). we had Sting continuing to go batshit crazy, this week while painting Hogans face with an impromptu Ultimate Warrior mask. Lastly, we got a strong push for a Match Of The Year candidate thanks to Eric Young pinning Jason Hervey.

This was TNAs best show so far this year!

Everyone bitches about no one new getting pushed to the main event. TNA pushes Gunner into a main event spot. Everyone bitches about TNA not the people they like into a main event spot. ...didn't we all have this same argument two years ago with the WWE and Sheamus?

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

Sheamus didn't spend two years as part of a jobbing security-guard tag team and lose to Eric Young two weeks before embarking on his megapush. Sheamus is also charismatic and good in the ring.

If you're excited by Aries being brought in for one show after they completely fucked him over years back, or by the return of a near-50-year-old valet/very bad women's wrestler, or by them seemingly setting up a double-turn between Hogan and Sting...well, more power to you. At least Joe got to wrestle a great match before inevitably jobbing again.

Eh. I still think Swagger's world title reign was weaker and so was Mysterio's '06 world title reign and Jericho's '02 title reign is up there too, This is a bad start to his title reign but Anderson has a ways to go.

Not that I wannna see Gunner be pushed and you're right he was a nothing before this inexplicable push but wasn't Alex Riley a joke before he couldn't take Miz's abuse and beat him up? He was pretty much a pinata that got beat down when Miz ran and lost matches in two minutes and was pretty much a better dressed version of Stevie Richards? Three weeks of getting the best of Miz has given him cred but he was not exactly booked to look like anything but a crony and wasn't really protected before this push. As far as Sheamaus everyone but you bitched that it was too much too soon and that he was being pushed cause he was HHH's buddy. He did not show much during his first title reign but did improve a lot after that and became a solid hand.

I will agree that the E is trying the same thing with Riley, and for me the jury's still out on Riley. I have two problems with Gunner - he's generic in the ring and on the mic, and his match with Anderson had no crowd heat. I'll agree that Riley's generic in the ring as well, but he seems to be getting a decent reaction out of the crowd. And maybe Gunner will manage that in a couple of weeks' time as well. Jury's still out.

I think Sheamus was always pushed as someone with star potential, so when he did get that megapush to the main event, we were familiar with him as he was already a force to be reckoned with, and hence he had a bit more credibility about him. Gunner's problem is that he's been presented poorly for months, and then all of a sudden, he's F5-ing TNA World Champions left and right. To me, it's another example of seeing if shit sticks on the wall, rather than putting any sort of a plan into place with a talent you think might have the potential to make it big.

I agree with you on Gunner 100%. With all the talent they have I have no clue why they're pushing him and Crimson it is new faces but the wrong ones. As far as Sheamus he went from feuding with Goldust in Ecw to winning the world title six weeks after he debuted ion Raw in a tables match. Btw just wanna say I am a big fan of your Impact reports and missed them when you were not around for a few months.

Gunner has all the look of CM Punk and none of the talent. Plus, if you can't get a reaction out of the Impactzone crowd, you know something is wrong.

I still don't understand the whole BFG series scoring thing. I wonder if it will go the same route as the top ten ranking system, though. It just seems so convoluted and needlessly complex.

It's sad that Aries/Kash/Rave only got four minutes on a show with the tag line "wrestling matters". At least Samoa Joe looked pretty good - I mean, he still lost but he looked more and more like the Joe of 2005. I'm sure this is all for naught, though, considering the Destination X stuff is supposed to be a one-shot deal and we'll be back to normal afterwards.

And lord do I miss the Knockouts division when it was just starting out - before it become nothing more than a third-rate, bad late-night Cinemax movie.

The problem, I have with Gunner and Anderson is who is the face and who is the heel? Gunner is aligned with Immortal and celebrated with Eric yet cut a psuedo face promo to start the show. Anderson cuts a heel promo in the beginning, backstage and in the match which was funny. I know people want shades of gray, but this was wall of gray. I am not a fan of Gunner, but you really can't complain that TNA isn't pushing new guys. They just happen to be guys, people just don't care for.

I am disappointed they didn't bring up AJ/Ray. That was a hell of a match. The Bound for Glory series is a great idea, but again I have no faith it will be done right. This should be used to build Crimson and Gunner instead beating TNA champs. The KO division is a mess right now, but I still prefer over the Divas division. Hopefully, this is the last of Kurt/JJ as well as JJ for awhile. A crazed Sting is something I can get behind if it leads to no Hogan and Bischoff for awile. And when the hell are they going to finally put him and Flair together.

The Wee Baby Sheamus.

I think people might be more OK with the Gunner push if they were also pushing people like Daniels, Williams, Styles, Joe, Pope - the people that actually get a reaction from the crowd.

Or at least I would be.

The Jarrett/Mexico thing is Jeff is wrestling on AAA's TripleMania tomorrow for their heavyweight title. Most people who follow AAA figure he's winning. So they'll have footage of Jarrett in Mexico if they want to advance that story.

AAA tapes on average once a week (though some weeks have two tapings and some weeks have zero.) There's no particular day of the week and it's not necessary for Jarrett to be on every taping. I figure he'll be at Orlando for every TNA show and appear on AAA TV tapings irregularly for the rest of the year.

If you care about such things, you can still find episode titles after the fact when they make it over to spike.com. (Also, they're numbering them! Although "Episode 637" can't mean this is the 637th episode - maybe the 37th week of season 6? I think they've been on Spike for six seasons...)

If I had been paying attention, I would have watched this show just for Austin Aries. (Maybe.)

IF Wikipedia is to be believed, 362 episodes (as of June 16, 2011) since June 4, 2004. 7 years * 52 weeks = 364 episodes if they ran 1 a week, so it SEEMS correct.

They get an A for effort on pushing someone new. They get an F for pushing someone with a name as generic and lame as "Gunner". At least with Sheamus, they could push his Irish heritage as part of his character. What can you do with a name like "Gunner"?

Screw Gunner. If you gave me a list of every TNA wrestler who had never been in the main event scene, Gunner and Crimson would be damn near the bottom of the list.
