The danger to setting up big money Mania matches a year in advance is that is could cause some fans to believe the company will just be in a holding pattern for the next 10 months, so why invest the time or money viewing the regular or PPV programming?

I think if they stick to it, don't hot-shot it, and work out a definitive finish for the match (ie don't "Hogan-Sting" it), it's a really cool big money match that'll work out in the end.

Also, they shouldn't have Cena win the Rumble or turn it into a three-way match. Just keep it Cena and The Rock. Keep it personal.

Maybe a championship could get involved and the Rumble winner just doesn't get to pick which title they challenge for this year. They can do a lot with this.

It's a huge risk if Cena gets injured, sure, but now they have all the time in the world to develop a story that they've already started telling and they can do some amazing things with it.

I can't believe that anyone really believes the plan is for Cena-Rock at Wrestlemania 28. I can't see them holding off any longer than Summerslam. I'll go on record that if John Cena faces The Rock one-on-one for the first time at Wrestlemania 28, I'll personally buy a ticket and donate it to charity.

Does anyone know if Rock is scheduled to film a movie anytime soon? It wouldn't surprise me if he has a film or other committment which explains why they're setting it up so far in advance, because Rock won't be available and/or because he's contractually prohibited from wrestling (not as a non-compete, but because of the risk or injury and such) until then.

I think another factor may be that Rock wants some time to get in better shape and actually regain some kind of ring form, because, at least in my opinion, he did NOT look particularly good in his exchange with Cena on Raw (I didn't see the Wrestlemania exchange).

That may have had something to do with the fact he's 38 now. He's not going to be moving like he did ten years ago, no matter how long or hard he trains. He's also liable to be more injury prone than in the old days, since, if you've ever seen his regimen, he relies almost entirely on weight-lifting for his fitness, and this is the age where bodybuilders really seem to go off the rails physically.

I'm not against doing the match at next year's Mania (if that's, in fact, the plan), but announcing it this far out seems more than a little absurd. As Redsox suggested, it makes the next year of programming seem a complete non-starter, and will also make next year's Rumble even more superfluous than it's already becoming. Plus, does Wrestlemania really NEED this match to be a PPV success? Why not give this shine to a show that isn't going to post good numbers without it? In another financial quarter, to give the investors something to feel good about?

Sure, but he should at least be able to get his timing to be much better. And I'm sure he wants to be as close to his former self as possible, even if we all understand why he's going to have lost a step or two.

I figure if Cena is in the Rumble, Rock will cost him the match and if Cena is the champ around Mania time he will cost him the title again. I see a lot of Rock interfering to piss Cena and to make sure he gets him one on one. The other problem with the time is what if Cena gets hurt or Rock gets hurt on a movie set? If they protect John, they are either going to have to put him in a huge injury angle or water down his matches more. I like the idea of a year long storyline, but there are too many variables that could derail it. The rumor is Rock took 3 months off and that is Wrestlemania season. I just hope he gets some warm up matches to at least work the kinks out and instead of going in cold.

The Ro-- Dwayne Johnson told Jay Leno last night that he has rings in his homes in Miami and LA and he works out in them all the time. He specifically mentioned running the ropes and maintaining timing. And look at the guy - he's not out of shape. He's in tremendous shape. Compare pics of him from, say, 1998 and today and he looks better than ever. As for ring rust, the guy is a natural in the ring by all accounts. He's probably ready to go if the Cena match were held tomorrow, but the best business sense is to save the dream match for the biggest show of next year in front of the largest crowd of the year in his hometown.

How does this make the Rumble superfluous? Because one guy might not be in it? The *last* time John Cena won the Rumble, he didn't make it to Wrestlemania anyway. He used the shot at Elimination Chamber. And I'm assuming you're referring to Edge vs del Rio going on first as something else that's making it superfluous? If so, that's retarded. Nobody enters the Rumble hoping to go on last at Wrestlemania. They enter the Rumble hoping to get a title match. Nobody competing for a world title is going to give a shit where that shot is on the card.

And as for the next year of programming being a non-starter... First of all, John Cena rarely accounts for more than a quarter of the programming on a good (for him) night. Secondly, what the fuck does this even mean? If CM Punk attacks John Cena in July, nobody is going to give a shit about that feud because Cena is going to wrestle The Rock nine months later?

All I'm trying to say is, when he and Cena traded punches on Raw the week before Wrestlemania, and he did the People's Elbow on ... Reilly? ... I thought it looked like crap. Of course he's not "out of shape," but I saw enough to lead me to believe that if the match were held next week, it probably wouldn't be very good. Or not as good as I'd want it to be anyway.

Him coming up short and almost falling back down on his kip up attempt is another thing that sticks out in my mind from that Raw.

I believe there have been a few people who've messed a kip up before regardless of taking time off. Its like saying R-Truth BOTCHING (yes, the caps is needed because it was THAT TERRIBLE) his "skinning the cat" at the Royal Rumble means R-Truth is rusty.

That said, you're totally right that if they had time to plot a match it'd be better than having one....tomorrow. But if they had one tomorrow I think the Rock, would in fact, "bring it".

While the guy being future endeavoured is generally the last person to know, Evan Bourne seemed pretty relaxed when he did Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling podcast last week.

In fact, he was slipping hints that there is some new merch coming out for him. (inflatable peace sign maybe)

Because I said that was the only reason and because that's the only evidence I offered in my post. Jesus.

His already-lame punches looked the worst they ever have, to me. I'd have to go back and watch to say specifically what about the People's Elbow bothered me, but it's not that important.

If you don't think he looked bad, fine, you're entitled to your opinion. But what I'm saying isn't that hard to understand.

Oh I'm sorry, you also mentioned the People's Elbow. And of course we all know that the People's Elbow is a bastion and true measurement of technical wrestling.

And while we're discussing leaving things out, you left out that I agree with you that some time would be good to make the match the best it could be.

There's no need to start calling out the Lord over these things Bucs. I agree that some could say that he didn't look 100%, but I disagree in the sense that he could have a good match tomorrow if it was needed.

Plus Rock goes into the Hall of Fame that weekend. It's going to be Rock'slemania XXVIII.

They had to announce the match on Monday (well not literally HAD to but...) because they owed people a payoff to the weeks of Rock/Cena build and the Wrestlemania finish. The payoff comes a year from now but at least it ends all speculation: yes he's going to wrestle.

Wrestlemania is really the only place befitting this kind of match. The other PPVs have been devalued so much -- as Wrestlemania has, if anything, only gotten bigger -- that I think having it on any show besides Wrestlemania would just devalue it. The only way to do it justice would be on a really focused SummerSlam with a Wrestlemania-sized advertising budget, or if they threw out one of the random crap shows and retitled it Cena Vs. Rock: The Cena Vs. Rock PPV or something. Even then, that show might triple or quadruple the average, but Wrestlemania with a Rock vs. Cena match could beat out Trump/McMahon for the most worldwide buys ever.

It'd be an interesting experiment, but If I'm Rock and I'm coming back for my first and maybe only match, I'd want it to be at Wrestlemania for maximized attention, emphasis, and sense of history. Really, if I'm anybody involved, I'd want it to be at Wrestlemania. Rock vs. Cena at Wrestlemania with a yearlong build can join the likes of Hogan/Andre, Bret/Austin, Austin/Rock, Rock/Hogan, and Undertaker/Michaels as one of the most famous and most celebrated matches in WWE and modern wrestling history.

Meanwhile the non-Wrestlemania dream matches (Rock/Goldberg, Hogan/HBK, other matches I've forgotten which prove my point) seem basically forgotten by comparison.

Fucking hell? Can't you people just be 'happy' that you are getting a Rock/Cena match? Isn't this what you've been wanting since the rapper Cena started bitching about The Rock not caring about and turning his back on the wrestling fans? Isn't this what you wanted five years ago when Cena was annoying and you just wanted The Rock to come in and shut Cena up?

Just be happy people!

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

I'm not sure why they're not floating Cena/Bryan w/Hogan against the Wyatts. That seems like a better use of the talent involved (provided that the Bryan/Michaels match falls through, which I hope it doesn't).
