According to reports from the TNA tapings last night, Hulk Hogan called himself something like "the tsunami taking over wrestling". Not sure what the exact verbiage was, but he definitely said "tsunami" and equated himself as such.
I think even more of a forehead slapper is Hogan's apology on Twitter and his reasoning for why he said it:
HulkHogan4Real Hulk Hogan The tsunami of wrestling wasn't cool,it will never air,it's already cut out,but when your cuttin promos old school and not following a
HulkHogan4Real Hulk Hogan Script like the other robots will no skills, sometimes you make mistakes.I'm sorry,I was on a roll and made a mistake.nothing but love and
HulkHogan4Real Hulk Hogan Total respect for Japan, but you guys already know that.I totally apologize.keepin it real HH4Life.Much respect, love for Japan HH
All right, in the heat of the moment of cutting a promo, Hogan said an unbelievably dumb and insensitive thing. The segment won't air so only the however many hundred people in the Impact Zone heard it. But I love how he turned it around into an attack on using writers to script promos.
I'm all for the boys cutting promos live and speaking from the gut, but one of the benefits of having Creative is that stuff like that never gets on "the script".
Not to make a mountain out of a molehill - Hogan said it, it won't air, he apologized - but Hogan just amazes me with his reasoning and poor judgment sometimes.
It seems a reasonable comparison to me. Hogan is a major force who has done nothing but destroy wrestling for the past several years. And while I won't go so far as to say that TNA is in as bad a shape as Japan, since TNA's stupidity hasn't actually killed anyone yet, I do suspect we'll see Japan rebuilt before we see TNA become a respectable company.

If you were the voice of my company's spokesduck, I would surely be compelled to fire you for these insensitive comments.
I mean, I wouldn't DO it...but I'd surely be compelled.
I'm sorry, but the fact that he had to apologize about this is a little stupid. People are too damned touchy these days. It isn't insensitive to use a metaphor.
Was there any merit in what he originally said? That is totally debatable. But insensitive? Really?
I think people just look for reasons to be offended anymore. How many people in Japan REALLY read that and got pissed off because he said the word tsunami? And if any did, don't they have more important things to worry about?

Some people are worrying about whether or not their loved ones are still alive or whether a good section of their country will suffer substantive nuclear fallout.
But yeah, I hate it when decorum in the wake of untold human tragedy gets in the way of my wrestling show.

Use of an unrelated metaphor has nothing to do with decorum.
Did the "Hurricane" change his name after Katrina? How many people died in Earthquakes when Tenta was wrestling?
If he said something like he "ravaged the wrestling world like the tsunami did Japan" - that would be insensitive. That would lack decorum. Getting your panties in a twist because someone said a word that is in some way related to a tragedy is just plain oversensitive.
What's next, we can't say water when people die in a tsunami? NBA commentators are going to get reprimanded the next time a player is "on fire" during California's next wildfire season? The Wizard of Oz is going to be banned after a particularly bad tornado?
If someone who actually experienced the tragedy is offended, then Hogan can deal with them on a personal level. Everyone else has no business saying anything. I'm more offended by the self righteousness of the people complaining than I am by his use of the word.
Until (and unless) we get an exact quote of what Hogan said and we get it in context; I'm going to assume his use of the word accidently because it was fresh in his mind.

It's good to know you have standards.
You seem convinced he just pulled the word "tsunami" randomly out of thin air - as if it every news channel has not carried nearly 24/7 coverage of this since Friday . I am... unconvinced.

Wait... has any of that actually happened? No? Okay then...
No one else is tripping over their own slippery slope trying to defend this as other people "getting their panties in a twist" - so I have no answers for you here.
If common sense isn't enough to convince you that referencing the very current tragedy to further a wrestling angle isn't appropriate, then neither can I. I would, however, like to see the debate between you and Cubs.
It's not a slippery slope argument. I rate banning the word tsunami in this case equally as retarded as banning the word water. I mean, if it makes you feel more secure in your moral superiority, that's fine - but that doesn't mean I need to share your squeamishness.
You talk about using a tragedy to advance a wrestling angle - is there any evidence that he did that? None - all accounts I have read point to him saying something about how he wanted stars from all over the world want to join his tsunami taking over wrestling.
You ask "has any of this actually happened?" Well, it just did here. People are being so squeamish about political correctness that they are suggesting with a straight face that you can't even use related words without causing offense.
If you are happy getting moritified everytime someone says something that is at all related to tragedy - that's fair and good. I saw a thread where everyone was knee-jerk condemning this "horrible" comment. Sorry I interrupted.
But fine, I'll agree. I'm insensitive. I'm starting to think that's a complement these days.

I see what you did there. Ah ha ha.
Still, could you maybe... stop doing it?
Not sure what you are specifically referring to (wasn't trying to "do" anything beyond make a comparison), but hey, your board. I figured you were going to say something eventually. It seems to be the way this usually goes.

Sorry... I meant to say "please be less retarded with your word choices."
I just like that Hogan seems to be both defending and insulting the concept of scripted promos from writers.
And for Pool-Boy, the problem with this for me is that Hogan would have never used that word unless it was fresh in his and others' minds. If he had always been using that verbiage, then I might see someone excuse it. Unfortunately it didn't happen that way, and Hogan should have known better.

I like Hogan in general sense, even after catch up to his facebook & twitter pages. For what he has & hasn't done in wrestling can speak for itself. Other people can say what they want about Hogan in one forum or another.
So, getting caught up in the heat of the moment I can understand. Yet I see where it's a case of having a overwhelming lack of tact on his part. He's apologized for it which show's he had guilt meaning he probably knew exactly what he was doing.
In comparison I don't see anyone anyong getting in a uproar about Jerry Lawler using the Charlie Sheen statements. Yet, I digress. It's a serious situation in Japan as opposed to one individual who thinks their self importance is higher than everyone else's on the planet. Apples & oranges.
