Tsunami hits north-eastern Japan after massive quake

    (click link for video)

A massive earthquake has hit the northeast of Japan triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.

Japan's TV showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away the Fukushima prefecture, after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake.

Officials said a wave as high as 6m (20ft) could strike the coast.

The quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles, shaking building in the capital for several minutes.

The tremor at 1446 local time (0546 GMT) was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks.

EDIT: More info from the AP via The Los Angeles Times (latimes.com).

EDIT 2: CNN International (edition.cnn.com) says the magnitude of the earthquake was 8.9.

EDIT 3: NHK World English (nhk.or.jp) is down up, but running very very slowly as I type this.

Tsunami sirens... that's not good. At least I'm away from the beach on the fourth floor.

EDIT~! No more sirens. Apparently I've missed the evacuation zone by three or four whole blocks. We'll find out in 4 and a half hours how this is going down.

A lot of people out here in L.A. are panicking about tsunami warnings out here, but I would think that something would hit Hawaii long before it reached coastal California. I could be wrong, though.

If I fail to post tomorrow it may be time to batten down the hatches.

Good luck out there J. Kyle, and definitely let us know if/when you are out of the woods of this.

I saw on CNN that Oregon should prepare for waves. I know Guru and Lise are on the coast - keep an eye out, you guys.

The images I'm watching are heartbreaking. So much devastation.

There's a lot of fear and concern that the waves will hit the Philippines - where my Mrs. Oliver is from.

She didn't sleep a wink last night. We had CNN on all night long.

Wow.

We have a friend who actually lives in Sendai (he teaches Miyagi University). Fortunately, he was traveling in Korea with his wife and two kids, but has no idea as to whether or not his apartment building is even standing.

We received some local Tsunami alerts, but those are largely "stay out of the water" warnings - a result of the Channel Islands blocking most of the energy.

I cannot even conceive of what an 8.9 quake would feel like. That's just huge.

Thanks for the well wishes Torchslasher.

Apparently the other islands took it more than we did, but the worst they got (so far) is some hotel lobby flooding. The sirens thankfully cut out around 3 but I stayed up until 4 because a Tsunami hit Japan where my friend was trapped on a train in Tokyo for over ten hours because of the automatic shutdowns.

He's at home now and the evacuation zone 4 blocks away isn't underwater (though there are lots of sirens out there right now) so here's hoping if they even manage to reach California you guys get your beaches splashed harmlessly like we did.

Here is a video shot from the shores of Kona by a (not so smart) person: http://youtu.be/91Wh0_yNJhc?hd=1

My parents on Oahu didn't see anything drastic (except cray long lines at gas stations and empty grocery store shelves). There is currently a strike going on with the employees of the electric company which would have also been problamatic in a minor way.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of everyone affected by this tragedy.

Is it just me, or have there been a lot more earthquakes over the past few years than in a long time? I can't help but wonder whether that's due to an underlying cause.

It is just amazing how powerful the earth is. In a related note, my cousin and his family are a little ways south of the epicenter. He said it was unlike anything he has ever felt before.

My friend who I helped get the money to go over to Tokyo is fine. He says he will out of contact when he goes to Kotoy and Oaska for a couple of days. I guess the trip he is on won't refund the money. I'd rather him lose the money then be out of contact for almost a week with all of everything that is going on. I guess rolling blackouts started in Tokyo around 10 am yesterday.

any chance you could remember to post NSFW when there are undressed ladies on the front page of a link?

Gosh, I must admit, I never even knew it was him.
