Back from Vegas, slightly richer (thanks to a long-shot 40-1 bet), and ready to run through the crop of commercials.

THE GOOD
-Bridgestone's "Reply All" ad was the funniest commercial of the night for me, which really isn't saying all that much. I nearly mistook it for a CareerBuilder ad, until I noticed the distinct lack of simian presence.
-The Darth Vader kid rules the universe! This is for a Volkswagen ad, of all things!
-The NFL reaches out to our love of TV, by including clips of every single sitcom, from Happy Days to The Simpsons to Family Matters to Family Guy to The Brady Bunch and finally culminating with South Park. I got a big kick out of this one the first time around.
-Doritos Bulldog. I got a good chuckle out of this commercial that proves, once again, that it's so much more cost-effective to have fans create your commercials for you.
-Snickers rules it solely by virtue of bopping Roseanne with a giant log. I could watch that all day.
-The REAL CareerBuilder ad features monkeys having fun with parking spaces, which again, is good for a few chuckles.

THE BAD
-Adrien Brody croons for Stella Artois. This one disappointed me, as it feels like it kinda just dragged on.
-ENOUGH ALREADY with the GoDaddy ads! How many years do we have to tear these people a new one?
-Eminem shills for Lipton Brisk! If 2000 Eminem would have known that he'd end up doing crappy commercials in 2011, he'd have kicked his own ass.
-Eminem shills for Chrysler! If 2002 Eminem would have known that he'd end up selling out his best song for a car company's crappy commercial in 2011, he'd have kicked his own ass.
-Pepsi Max strikes out three times. The henpecked husband bit wasn't funny. Neither were the preppy bullies. Shots to the groin don't always lead to laughs, despite what George C. Scott may have taught us. And the sex-crazed male is just pathetic.
-Doritos brings the dead back to life! The punchline didn't particularly do it for me.
-KIA spy movie turns into Clash of the Titans turns into sci-fi alien schlock turns into Mayan prophecy. What the hell was that?!

THE UGLY
-Doritos guy licks cheese off a guy's fingers/pants. This was just plain creepy.
-Best Buy features Ozzy Osbourne and Justin Bieber, which is just an odd pairing and the ad went by way too quick to hit any real punchline.

THE MOVIE TRAILERS
-Kung Fu Panda 2 starts off the LARGE number of movie trailers this year. Unfortunately, this trailer doesn't do anything to justify this sequel's existence, when the first movie worked pretty well as a stand-alone piece.
-Fast Five! It's the exact same Fast and the Furious movie you've seen four times, only this one features The Rock! PASS! Well...ok, I'm perversely interested in how much of a car wreck (no pun intended) a Vin Diesel/Dwayne Johnson movie could turn into.
-Cowboys & Aliens, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford and directed by Jon Favreau. I'm having bad Wild Wild West flashbacks!
-Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon! It's filled with EXPLOSIONS, which you may or may not have seen in a Michael Bay "film".
-Thor! A bit short and didn't show us anything we haven't already seen, except for some more Natalie Portman.
-Super 8! This is the latest from J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg. Not sure what it's about, but I'm sure it'll get a lot of buzz over the next few months.
-Captain America: The First Avenger! Superheroics during World War II featuring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. No word yet on if he'll get to punch Hitler in the face, but I'm still stoked for this one.
-Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It's like they took bits and pieces of the original trailer, scrambled them around, and said "Here's a commercial"! Blech.
-Rango sees Johnny Depp voice a CGI lizard for some reason. I don't get this one. It's not like he's hard up for work. Why would Johnny Depp reduce himself to this kind of dreck?
-Rio! Another CGI family movie trailer, the THIRD one for the game!
-Limitless! What happens when you access 100% of your brain? Will you care to find out? I may or may not.

A pretty dull year for commercials, with very few standouts. Feel free to discuss any commercials that I glossed over.

The USA Today Ad Meter (usatoday.com) says it has a tie for best commercial for the first time ever. Personally, I would had gone with the Bud Light dogs over the Dorito pug, but both were really good. No all-time greats, IMO (except maybe the VW Vader one) but plenty of good ads for a solid, entertaining night.

The good:
-As mentioned, both dog spots stood out.
-Loved the VW Vader ad. If you didn't like it, then I guess you just don't like Star Wars or children at all.
-The Audi 'escape from old luxury' ad cracked me up. I don't usually care for car commercials, but between 'release the hounds', 'hit them with the Kenny G', and 'Great goodness, I've been hoodwinked', I thought it was one of the funnier spots to watch.
-Both Bridgestone spots were good. The 'reply all' probably got more notice, but I liked the beaver one as well.
-The Snickers ad with Roseanne getting hit with a log. Really, Roseanne getting hit with any heavy object would get a thumbs up from me.

The bad:
-Didn't really like the NFL one with all the sitcom characters wearing NFL gear. Maybe it was just me, but the editing of the clothes onto some of the characters looked really off, especially the 'Seinfeld' ones.
-E-Trade and Go Daddy. I list both together because they're both the same tired commercials we have already seen for several years now.
-The Eminem Brisk ad. It's False hit it on the head with that one. Didn't mind the Chrysler one as much, but at two minutes, it seems way too long to play as a regular ad and it really didn't make me want to buy a car.
-The Teleflora ad with Faith Hill. Felt like a wasted ad.
-Black Eye Peas for whatever the hell it was they were schilling for during the halftime. Does anyone know what the product is or what it's supposed to do? I didn't think the halftime show was that bad, but the commercial was a definite stinker.

The ugly:
-The Dorito one with the guy licking fingers. That kind of grossed everyone out in the room.

Other than that, nothing really awful. Not a great amount of ads that had you busting a gut, but like I said, it seemed like a good year, slightly better than I've felt it's been the last couple of years.

Of the movie commercials, the only one that really surprised me was Captain America. That looked a lot better than I'd dreaded (what I dreaded was something as equally banal as Thor). I liked the Benjamin Button CGI to shrink Chris Evan's physique, I thought the World War II period looked good, and it even reminded me a little of Indiana Jones (granted, it reminded me of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but of the parts of it I liked). Mainly, Captain America invoked what I would imagine a Marvel Comics version of World War II would look like. I'm holding out hope for Cap.

Super 8 told me nothing, but that's a good thing for a movie like that. The combination of JJ Abrams directing and Spielberg producing is enough to get me in the theater.

With Transformers, despite 30 seconds of all those robots transforming, colliding, and exploding, the most alien looking thing in the teaser was Rosie Huntington-Whitely in the 2 seconds of her they showed.

Everything else gets a shrug.

Man, do I wish I had Eminem's integrity. Voice a cartoon commercial bragging about how you don't do commercials, then two hours later, appear as yourself in a commercial driving a Chevy soccer moms across America will be driving by the summer. Screw integrity, I wish I had his money.

I could go the rest of my life without seeing wacky animals and/or cartoon violence in a Super Bowl Ad for food and/or beer.

I thought the Eminem car ad was great, because it was more about his hometown of Detroit and their economic state than the specific car company.

Apparently that Groupon ad was supposed to legitimately have a charitable angle to it, but the tone made it sound like they were mocking Tibet! I read that a second one with Elizabeth Hurley ran during Glee that wasn't any better. What a PR mess...

-I loved the truck commercial (think it was Chevy) that was basically a Lassie parody.
-Loved the Bud Light product placement ad
-Loved the doritos dog commercial
-Loved the Darth Vader kid

OK commercials: Bud Light kitchen makeover, snickers

Trailers: Am now very much looking forward to Thor and Captain America, and am one of the few that is somewhat intrigued by Rango now (I guess the trailer did its job on me).

Did not like: Eminem Lipton, the multiple trailers for the brain pill movie, creepy doritos commercial, the Stella ad.

I must admit, my favorite was the Best Buy with Ozzy and Bieber. Just the juxtaposition.

Then Star wars for VW.

I also liked the coke one with the dragon and the attack on the castle. Thought at first it was a video game ad.

But my favorite part of the whole night was the players reading the Declaration along with their various groups. I was in tears at the end of that. I know they have done it before, but I don't care.

Something that, for me, makes this ad even better (news.blogs.cnn.com):

Another clever ad, for the Volkswagen Passat, has us fawning over "The Darth Vader Kid," 6-year-old Max Page, who was busy Monday doing the rounds on morning shows. Max has a congenital heart defect, and has a pacemaker, but his physicians say he's able to live a relatively normal life. He said he was "thrilled" to show off his "special move" in the ad.

Pretty weak crop of ads overall this year. The Vader/VW ad was terrific, but everyone'd already seen it by the time the Super Bowl actually rolled around.

The Bridgestone commercials (the helpful beaver and the 'reply all' panic) were both pretty good. The NFL Network's ad with the classic sitcoms was pretty inventive --- who knew ALF was a Panthers fan? You'd think he'd just want to eat them.

No real standouts for me either. Nothing really surpassed "good" for me, but several fell in that category. I was ready to love the "reply all" ad, but I thought the punchline really fell flat. I was like, "that's it?"

It does seem like the trend is moving towards movie trailers. So no Green Lantern, correct?

I like Darth Vader kid and the Ozzy one.

I would pay money to punt the Etrade baby.

The Captain America ad looked awesome and I've heard you can see Dum Dum Dugan and the Howling Commandoes. I paused on the Red Skull and he looks wicked awesome.

The thing about the E-trade baby is that the ad where he is in his crib ("apparently riding the dog like a small pony is FROWNED UPON IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT") is a lot better than the one they ran during the Super Bowl.

And I laughed hard at the finger-licking part of the Doritos ad. "I'm finished." "No, you've left the best part."

I thought Captain America looked the strongest and Thor right behind it. I missed Pirates and maybe Cowboys and Aliens. Super 8 had a people scratching their heads but after Star Trek, I trust JJ and I will always Spielberg. I have no faith in Transformers and the annoying ring sound turned me off. The animated pixar like films looked ok if that.

The Darth Vader made a lot of us smile as well as seeing Roseanne get owned. The rest was weak sauce. Too many "Here We go." Bud Light commercials and cars I can not or will I ever be able to afford. It was just a bad year for commercials as everything fell pretty flat.

Wow, I really thought the Teleflora ad with Faith Hill was actually the best. It struck the right tone between funny and "naughty" and just worked big for me. My second favorite was actually the Doritos ad with reviving dead things. Hilarious.

And just to make sure that nobody agrees with me, I gotta say that I didn't like the VW Vader ad. It was cute yes, but the fact is that the kid's parents are willingly deceiving this kid into thinking he has superpowers. It almost felt cruel to me.

As for the movie trailers, my dad and brother-in-law were floored by Cowboys and Aliens. They knew nothing of this film.

This. So much, this.

I don't know why seeing Eminem in a commercial bothered me as much as it did. Maybe because it was two?
Dr. Dre did Dr. Pepper ads and I didn't care. Eminem is entitled to cash in on his fame like every other star, but his controversial bad boy status has taken a huge hit. Maybe he's okay with that.

I was disappointed in the VW/Vader ad because they ran a shortened version of the one that's been flying all over cyberspace. I thought it took a lot of the suspense out of it.

My favorite was the Chevy Silverado ad with the Silverado playing the role of Lassie.

The Eminem Detroit ad spawned a series of tweets amongst those I follow suggesting what a Detroit-themed "Groupon" ad would look like...

-"Save 37.5 percent on a Glock 9".

-"Save 50 percent at that place from Hardcore Pawn".

-"Detroit has the highest poverty level in the US, but thanks to Groupon I got a great deal on my hotel!"

Oh, *that's* what was supposed to be going on? I kept expecting to see Lassie (or the border collie, etc) either driving the trucks, or crashed out at the end of the day, holding the car keys.

"Release the hounds!" And they're afghans. "Turn on the Kenny G". That one was good.

Was the black beetle with racing stripe not a new one. I thought that was kinda cool, for some reason.

As far as "The Ugly", how about the commercial that talked about how Tibetan culture is being threatened (making it sound like an Amnesty International commercial or something) only to turn into a commercial for a coupon site?
