What am I saying is it's impossible to get the 3 points for winning without also getting 43 points for finishing first. Those two things are same thing.
They're saying it they way they say it because this is all geared around the "simple 43 to 1" idea, but that's not true at the most important place.

The 3 points is part of the reward"BONUS" for winning.
Mike Helton per presser,(ESPN.com)
Helton defended the system that some believe will reward consistency over winning.
"We can continue enhancing the attention to and the appetite to win and bonus points and how we apply those to a basic simple structure to start with," he said.

Why do they say a driver gets 43 points for first place and 3 for winning? 46 is easy enough to say.
Plus a bonus point for leading a lap makes 47!
Otherwise, don't even get me started. (Because this is 90% terrible.)
But it ends the mystery points. NASCAR is at least telling you how it is all calculated now with the new system and it is simple math. In a way it is NASCAR's way of responding to the outcry when Jamie McMurray did not make the Chase last season.

There were no mystery points before. It WAS simple math. There was no algebra or trigonometry involved. They just changed the numbers a little bit.
If you couldn't figure it out BEFORE, I don't think this helps you know what's going on when Jimmie Johnson has 643 points on the season and he finishes 4th while leading the most laps. If you can figure that out, you could have figured it out the old way if you took five seconds to understand it.

Really, the only thing is changes is that sucky, but consistently sucky hangers on in 11th and 12 place will no longer get in, because instead we will have a more flamboyant driver who wasn't as consistent - perhaps because he took chances, but won. ie: Kyle Busch.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.
