I remember being amazed at just how short both Eddy and Benoit were when I met them at the Pillman show in 2000. It's one thing to know a guy is 5'6" to 5'8" but another to be standing next them and seeing it in person.
I thought Dibiase sucked back during the Legacy days and I don't think he's improved at all. Speaking of Billy Gunn, he's the Billy Gunn/Lex Luger of today for my money.
I'll bash his post '92 and especially his post '97 work, but DiBiase Jr. is not even in the league of a young Lex Luger. You could see the 'it' factor in a young Luger even in his rookie days in Florida, you can't see it in DiBiase. Now, doing a lot of work with Flair/Steamboat/Sting and Barry motherfucking Windham in that early portion of his career had a great deal to do with it, but people did care about Luger, until he became a joke with the heel/face turns. The fans have cared about DiBiase Jr once, and that was the night he backed down from Orton when the crowd was ready to explode for him. Since then, zilch.

While Shawn was definitely not a tough guy, he was also not really a World Champ for most of his career. He had one long reign in 1996 that really didn't draw that well ratings-wise (though he had the horrid luck of running up against the groundbreaking nWo angle) and he never really held the belt much after that. Won it at Rumble '97, lost his smile a month later. Got it at Surviror Series '97, and kept it till Mania XIV, so about five months. Only world title he ever touched after that was another one month reign in 2002. So using him as an example, I think, goes to my point in that he was more effective as a draw out of that World Champion role than he ever was in it.
Originally posted by Matt TrackerCurrently, he's the classic weasel heel, down to the lackey he demands to fight his foes (and finish his catchphrase!). I refer to HonkyTonk Man and his legendary IC title reign. I think Miz is right in that formula, except he's better on the mic.
I certainly concede the point that it worked for Honky Tonk Man, who also had zero athletic ability. But I would never have ever made Honky Tonk Man the WWF Champion, and essentally that's the difference here.

I feel like we're getting away from not believing someone in the ring to purely talking about someone's look, and I was more going toward the former than the latter. Jericho, Eddie, Flair and Benoit were all among the elite workers of their generations. Flair being not imposing and squeaking out cheap wins had serious implications for how the NWA Champion was perceived v.s. the WWF Champion (Hogan never lost). I would also say Punk is more credible, as I bought him in matches with Taker. Now, to talk about size, I never believed a single thing Psycho Sid did inside the ring, and he was a huge huge man. So it's not stricly a matter of how physically imposing you are. Jericho's weasel title run is the closest to Miz's, and it turned out pretty badly from what I remember. It was really only about 2008 that Jericho became a true top guy after the feud of the year with Shawn.
No Spiff, I didn't see any NXT, but if you're right about Nikki, I look forward to being proven wrong.

Hokey smoke, Luger was a superstar when he walked in the door in Atlanta. His on-air free-agent deliberations leading to signing with the Horsemen was like LeBron's decision to leave Cleveland.

Benoit and Eddy were jacked out of their skulls. I'm 6'4 and if I see a guy with their height and frame holding that kind of muscle mass I'm going to be a little bit leery because they clearly aren't all there. Never underestimate crazy

Well, we know that's true in at least one of those examples; but hadn't Eddie been clean for quite a few years?
Clean of alcohol and hard drugs, it's believed so. Clean of painkillers, not after his back injury got worse in 2004. Clean of steroids, not even a little bit.

Noting arbitrary about it. Vickie actually is fat (and mean), Nattie is neither.

Totally agreed. It was fun and made sense to throw out the Corre/Nexxus guys, as was having Cena attack Wade/Punk and them being unable to retaliate. But to DQ for using foul language doesn't even make sense (like DQing them for being ugly), let alone the not delivering the main.
