Any awards that combine MMA with wrestling is null and void. Its not that hard to keep them separate. It just seems another attack ad on TNA and parts of the WWE with a verbal bj to wrestling except a handful of people have seen.

It has nothing to do with TNA. The Observer has done this for years. It's because Meltzer is a giant MMA fan as well as wrestling fan (I think I heard someone on here say that he's probably a bigger MMA fan actually).

It's an attack ad by the 700 different people who voted.
it makes sense that people who read the newsletter would likely vote in a way that follows his views and opinions.
Of course I would argue that the results has changed (for the worse) in the years since the merger and F4W subscribers were allowed to vote.
I do agree that wrestling and MMA should have separate categories and never really thought there should be ones where you could vote for either. having an MMA match listed alongside 2 wrestling matches for "worst match of the year" seems silly to me.
I don't really buy that the F4W people have changed it. I see the same ~700-800 vote total pre-2008. Either they read the Observer and are just as "informed" as everyone else, or they subscribe for podcast LOLs and aren't going to bother to fill out a long, serious awards ballot anyway.
I would do without the MMA mix too but my eyes just skip right past them. The orders things finish in still stands up even if there are fighters oddly sprinkled in there.
Without doing any research about it, it seems the voting in the last few years has been more mainstream, since you likely have people voting (or eligible to vote) who only watch WWE or TNA and maybe ROH and not necessarily Japan or Lucha.
If I could find my Awards issues, I'd be tempted to do an eyeball test.
really, there's probably not much difference for the influence Dave has now vs all those years when his opinion got people to vote for Flair and Kobashi (and Mr. Fuji for Worst Manager).

Fucking bullshit.
I'd vote Grisham myself, but I can definitely see voting Cole. He was hilarious on NXT, but having to listen to him waver between heel and straight PBP man on Raw was excruciating. And he deserves it (and I know this is outside the voting time period) for laughing at Matt Striker for knowing the names of moves on Smackdown this past week.
Can't blame Meltzer for the smart business move. Why tie yourself to pro wrestling then MMA is taking off?

I now present the winners of the 2010 Mossies (awards run Jan 1-Dec 31 because that's the timeframe 2010 took place in)
Worst Award Show Idea: 1. WO HAVING FAKE SPORTS IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS A REAL SPORT 2. Michael Cole being named Worst Announcer when a) he became awesome b) Matt Striker is an announcer 3. McCool winning a Slammy (still not over)/Angry Miz Girl not winning Superstar of the Year (tie)
Best Worst Match:
1. MAXINE VS K8LN (WWE NXT, EDMONTON AB) Landslide, great ring psychology with Maxine using the sweater as a weapon, Cole leaving the match to talk to his mom (who he still lives with) and the debut of the Atomic Wedgie Bomb (hit twice in a row, 2nd time didn't even take Maxine off her feet and Max won the match a few seconds later with a rollup/vagina grab) and got me an RT from @KaitlynWWE. I've probably rewatched this match more than any other one this year. ***** MOTCC (match of the century candidate)
Best Wrestling Show: 1. WWE NXT (SEASON 3) 2. WWE Raw 3. WWE Smackdown .. n/a: ROH on HDNet (never saw) 99999. TNA iMPACT!
The Wrestling Observer has had MMA awards since 1997. It's not like the MMA coverage started with Ultimate Fighter 3: Ortiz vs Shamrock.

Oh man, I was a witness to history! (1:00 into the video Justin posted, bright yellow shirt, top of the screen)
But I really don't get how you can possibly say that match was worse than Bret Hart and Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania. Two inexperienced women had a really bad opening match on the C-show. Or maybe the D-show. Whereas Bret Hart is an all-time legend having his first match in a decade, and Vince McMahon, while not a wrestler, has a history of delivering a memorable performance in big matches, and they stunk up one of the most anticipated matches on the biggest, most-watched wrestling show of the entire year. Really, it was the most disappointing match in Wrestlemania history and I don't see what else could even be considered. Context has to count for something.
Weird to see ROH/Japan clean up in most of the wrestling awards and then Cena wins Wrestle Of The YEar. He's not even had a particularly memorable 12 months.

Wrestler of the Year has a heavy consideration of being a draw. It was not a good year for ROH or for Japan.
